Gragu the Unstable

Eredrim the Venerable

How Bond upgrades work—and what changed about spending
The independent guide describes four Bond Tiers, I through IV, purchased with Glimpse through Zhirelle the Shellkeeper in Merow Keep. Bond development expands a Shell’s existing combat style; it does not mean a newly acquired Shell already has every passive that helps explain its later ranking. That matters especially for kits whose defining power or loops are described as arriving with greater investment.
Cold Symmetry’s Week 1 update supersedes older warnings that Glimpses or Tarcores are finite. The developer says those resources are no longer finite, allowing all Shells and Tarstones to be upgraded in one playthrough. The update also says Mether’s Severance can be given to Zhirelle to sever a Shell’s Bond, reset it, and return the Glimpses spent; it may be purchased from Merrick and can restock as the player progresses.
A practical way to choose what to develop
- Start with the defensive rhythm you enjoy. A highly ranked Shell can still feel awkward if its approach does not suit you.
- Try the Shell’s core active and basic combat pattern before deciding whether its deeper Bond path fits your play style.
- Judge a Shell after accounting for Bond investment. A fresh acquisition may not yet have the passive or interaction that anchors its guide description.
- Use the reset option if you want to redirect a Bond rather than treating early Glimpse spending as an irreversible choice.
Which Shell should a new player invest in first?
There is no official first-investment recommendation in the available sources. For boss control, the August 21 guide favors Smert; for summons and opening creation, it highlights Genessa; for sustain and stagger loops, it favors Gragu. A player who prefers dodging, armor, or parry-driven combat may reasonably prefer a different Shell. Use the tier list as a shortlist, then choose around the defensive style and active ability you actually like.

Eredrim is the clearest one to set aside if parrying is not enjoyable: the guide’s description centers on parries, ripostes, and break pressure. Its summaries instead point to Smert for boss control, Genessa for spectral summons, Gragu for sustain and stagger, or Tiel for dodging and back attacks. Those are descriptions of different rhythms, not a guarantee that any one will be best in every encounter.
Release and ranking context
Team Cold Symmetry’s July 8, 2026 release-date announcement said Mortal Shell II would launch worldwide on August 20, 2026, for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The tier list discussed here is dated the following day. Because the ranking and most ability and route details come from an independent guide rather than developer material, treat them as a dated interpretation and check current in-game information if an ability, route, or patch has changed.
