The guide-reported route to the Blackmarrow Key commonly called the “second” key starts at Widow’s Overlook. Follow the path into the Sanguine Caverns, defeat The Lost Child, then search at the Child’s Feeding Grounds beacon. Reports differ on the final interaction: one describes opening a sarcophagus behind the beacon, while another has you cleanse the Ova corruption, collect +26 Ova, return to the beacon, and open a room behind the former Ova location.

Use Child’s Feeding Grounds as the reliable landmark, and treat the sarcophagus-versus-Ova sequence as a route or build variation rather than as two confirmed separate locations.

Quick route to the Blackmarrow Key

Stage What to do What you should see
1 Begin at Widow’s Overlook. A route leading into the Sanguine Caverns.
2 Follow the cavern route until you reach The Lost Child. The Lost Child encounter.
3 Defeat The Lost Child. The Child’s Feeding Grounds area becomes the relevant search point.
4 Inspect the Child’s Feeding Grounds beacon and the space behind it. Depending on the guide or build, a sarcophagus or a newly accessible room associated with the Ova spot.
5 Interact with the container or room and verify the item in your inventory before leaving. The Blackmarrow Key pickup is recorded by the game.

Do not leave as soon as the boss is defeated. The key is associated with the post-boss search around the beacon, not with the act of defeating The Lost Child alone.

What to have ready before entering the caverns

This is a progression route rather than a detached overworld pickup. You need to be able to travel from Widow’s Overlook into the Sanguine Caverns and reach The Lost Child. If you cannot yet reach that encounter, the key will not be obtainable by simply searching the beacon area from an earlier point in the route.

  • Starting landmark: Widow’s Overlook.
  • Destination region: Sanguine Caverns.
  • Required encounter: The Lost Child.
  • Search landmark: the Child’s Feeding Grounds beacon.
  • Final check: confirm that the Blackmarrow Key appears in your inventory or pickup record.

The available guides do not establish a special Shell, weapon, consumable, or difficulty setting required for this pickup. They also do not provide an official item database entry that resolves the room interaction. Consequently, the safest preparation is to complete the route normally, defeat the boss, and then inspect every interactable point around the named beacon before moving on.

Step-by-step route

1. Leave Widow’s Overlook for the Sanguine Caverns

Start at Widow’s Overlook and take the route that leads into the Sanguine Caverns. The location name matters because several Blackmarrow Key discussions use “second key” as shorthand for different pickups. Beginning at this overlook keeps you on the route described for Child’s Feeding Grounds.

As you move through the caverns, continue along the normal progression path rather than searching for a key before the boss. The reported pickup is tied to what becomes available around the Child’s Feeding Grounds after the Lost Child encounter.

2. Reach The Lost Child

Progress through the cavern route until The Lost Child encounter. The guides that identify this key place the relevant area after this boss. If you are looking at the beacon before the encounter is complete, do not assume the key is missing; the post-boss state is part of the route description.

3. Defeat The Lost Child

Defeat The Lost Child, then remain in the area long enough to check the nearby landmark. The key is not described as a reward that automatically appears at the end of the fight. Instead, the reported instructions send you to the Child’s Feeding Grounds beacon and the space behind or near it.

4. Find the Child’s Feeding Grounds beacon

Use the beacon as your navigation anchor. Search directly behind it and inspect any newly opened doorway, alcove, container, or other interaction prompt. One guide describes a sarcophagus in this position as the object containing the Blackmarrow Key.

If the beacon area does not immediately expose a container, check the surrounding space for the Ova-related interaction described in the alternate route below. The exact room presentation is the point on which the available accounts disagree; the named area is consistent.

5. Apply the Ova sequence if the room is still sealed

A separate guide gives a more specific post-boss sequence:

  1. Locate the Ova corruption around the Child’s Feeding Grounds area.
  2. Cleans the corruption.
  3. Collect the guide-reported +26 Ova reward.
  4. Return to the beacon.
  5. Open the newly accessible room behind the former Ova spot and inspect its contents.

In this version of the route, the room is not treated as available until the corruption has been cleansed and the Ova collected. The +26 figure is an in-game reward reported by that guide, not an independently measured statistic or a universal amount confirmed by an official item listing.

6. Pick up the key and verify it

Interact with the sarcophagus or the accessible room, depending on what your game presents. Confirm the Blackmarrow Key pickup in the inventory before leaving Child’s Feeding Grounds. This simple check prevents confusion later, especially if you are collecting several keys in one playthrough and using “second” to mean the order in which you found them.

Why guides describe two different final interactions

The route landmark is consistent across the detailed accounts: Child’s Feeding Grounds in the Sanguine Caverns, reached after The Lost Child. The disagreement concerns how the final room is opened and which object is described as holding the key.

Reported version Final actions How to use it
Sarcophagus route After defeating The Lost Child, go to the Child’s Feeding Grounds beacon and inspect the sarcophagus behind it. Use this when a container or direct interaction is visible behind the beacon.
Ova-return route Cleans the Ova corruption, take +26 Ova, return to the beacon, and open the room behind the former Ova location. Use this when the direct sarcophagus interaction is absent and the area still has an Ova-related objective.

These accounts may be describing the same space with different terminology, or they may reflect a progression, route, or build difference. The available material does not conclusively establish which explanation is correct. Therefore, do not treat one wording as proof that the other route is wrong. Follow the visible interaction state in your game while keeping the beacon as the fixed landmark.

If the key room does not open

Use this troubleshooting order rather than abandoning the route:

  1. Confirm the boss state. Make sure The Lost Child has actually been defeated in the current save. The reported route places the room after that encounter.
  2. Return to the correct landmark. Recheck the Child’s Feeding Grounds beacon, not a different beacon elsewhere in the Sanguine Caverns.
  3. Inspect behind the beacon. Walk around the rear and sides of the beacon and look for a newly available interaction. The sarcophagus account places the container behind it.
  4. Check for Ova corruption. If the direct container is not present, look for the Ova-related area described by the alternate guide. Cleanse the corruption and collect the reported +26 Ova, then return to the beacon.
  5. Read the interaction prompt. Use the prompt attached to the beacon, room, or container rather than assuming that the first visible object is the pickup.
  6. Verify the inventory. If the Blackmarrow Key has already been collected, the room may appear empty on a later visit.

No available account supplies a definitive reset procedure, alternate boss trigger, or confirmed fix for a room that remains inaccessible after these checks. If your game still shows no interaction, the evidence does not support claiming that a particular reload, difficulty change, or Shell swap will solve it. Recheck the progression state and the exact landmark first.

Why “second” can be different in your save

“Second Blackmarrow Key” is an ordinal description, not necessarily a fixed inventory identity. NerdsChalk’s guide uses that wording for the Child’s Feeding Grounds route, but the number you assign to this key depends on which Blackmarrow Key you collect first.

Other reported locations include areas connected with Night Mode and a hidden Marrow Keep dungeon. Those references explain why two players can follow the same Child’s Feeding Grounds directions yet describe the key as their first, second, or another pickup. The location guide is more dependable than the ordinal: identify the Child’s Feeding Grounds key by its route and landmark, then use your own inventory order to decide whether it was “second” for you.

What a Blackmarrow Key unlocks

Blackmarrow Keys are reported to open Shade chests near the Marrow Keep elevator. One key is consumed for each chest, so opening a chest removes that key from your available supply.

The reward is a Shade, described as a cosmetic recolor for its corresponding Shell. The available account does not report a stat increase, new combat move, or other performance upgrade from the Shade. Before spending the key, choose a Shell you have already unlocked and actually want to recolor; the key-use decision is effectively a cosmetic selection.

Question Reported answer
Where are the chests? Near the Marrow Keep elevator.
How many keys does one chest consume? One Blackmarrow Key per chest.
What does the chest provide? A Shade cosmetic recolor for the corresponding Shell.
Does the Shade add reported stats? No stat upgrade is reported; it is described as cosmetic.

How certain is this location?

The Child’s Feeding Grounds route is supported by two detailed guides updated on August 26, 2026. NerdsChalk identifies the beacon-area sarcophagus, while AllThingsHow describes the Ova-cleansing and return sequence and the +26 Ova reward. A separate Mortal Shell 2 Game Wiki page, updated August 29, 2026, labels the Blackmarrow Key location unconfirmed.

That combination makes the route useful but not equivalent to an official developer-confirmed item map. The official Mortal Shell II site confirms that the game is available worldwide, but the available material does not provide an official Blackmarrow Key location entry or a developer statement resolving the interaction discrepancy. Treat the beacon, the Lost Child prerequisite, and the two reported room-opening variants as practical guidance, and verify the pickup in your own game before spending the key.

Recommended order for a clean pickup

For the fewest backtracks, complete The Lost Child encounter first, then search the beacon immediately. If a sarcophagus is visible, inspect it. If it is not, complete the Ova-related interaction and return to the beacon. Once the key is confirmed in your inventory, decide later which Marrow Keep Shade chest is worth opening, because the key is consumed and the reported benefit is cosmetic.
