Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and Mortal Kombat 11 are built around different ideas of variety. Armageddon’s defining pitch is breadth: an advertised roster of more than 50 fighters, a create-a-fighter system, custom fatalities and an adventure-focused Konquest mode. Mortal Kombat 11 instead centers on a cinematic time-bending story, customizable variations for established characters, modern combat systems and repeatable activities such as Towers of Time and the Krypt.
Neither game can be declared universally “better” from feature descriptions alone. The practical choice depends on whether you want Armageddon’s unusually large legacy roster and experimentation or MK11’s newer presentation, structured customization and current-generation combat design.
Quick comparison: what each game is trying to do
| Category | Mortal Kombat: Armageddon | Mortal Kombat 11 |
|---|---|---|
| Original release context | Listed for Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox, with an October 2006 release window. | Launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC on April 23, 2019. |
| Roster information established by the cited descriptions | The official series archive advertises more than 50 playable fighters. | The launch announcement describes returning and franchise-first fighters but does not provide a final roster total. |
| Customization | Kreate-A-Fighter builds a fighter’s appearance and abilities; Kreate-A-Fatality strings attacks into a custom finisher. | The Custom Character Variation System changes a named fighter’s appearance and attack style. |
| Main single-player focus | Konquest is presented as a full-blown adventure tied to Armageddon’s final battle. | A cinematic, time-bending story brings together versions of characters from different eras. |
| Additional modes highlighted in the sources | Motor Kombat is listed in the PS2 manual’s contents, alongside Kombat, Konquest and creation modes. | Towers of Time and the Krypt are highlighted by the publisher. |
| Combat systems specifically documented | The reviewed descriptions establish creation features, but not frame data or a complete balance analysis. | Flawless Blocks, Crushing Blows, offensive and defensive meters, and Fatal Blows available below 30% health. |
This is a contrast between packages, not a laboratory ranking. The available descriptions document what the games contain; they do not establish which title has superior matchup balance, netcode, story quality or competitive depth.

Armageddon’s advertised breadth
The Mortal Kombat: Armageddon game archive advertises “more than 50” playable fighters. That makes roster scale one of the game’s clearest selling points and places the emphasis on series-wide inclusion. The wording is an advertised feature rather than an independently counted audit, so it should be read as a scale claim, not as a precise final character total.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Armageddon’s roster concept also connects directly to its customization systems. Instead of limiting the player to selecting an existing fighter, the game lets the player create one, then use that character in the broader Armageddon package. The result is a roster experience that combines legacy character selection with personal experimentation.
What can and cannot be said about MK11’s total
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s April 23, 2019 launch announcement describes a broad mixture of returning fighters and franchise-first characters. It does not state a final roster number in that announcement. Therefore, a precise, like-for-like “Armageddon has X and MK11 has Y” comparison is not supported by the cited material.
For a buying decision, the meaningful distinction is therefore not a supposedly exact count. Armageddon is explicitly marketed around exceptional roster breadth, while MK11’s launch materials emphasize who is returning, who is new and how each fighter can be customized. If a specific MK11 character matters to you, verify that character in the edition and platform information you are considering rather than relying on a headline number.

How the customization systems differ
Armageddon: create the fighter and the finisher
Armageddon’s Kreate-A-Fighter is a character-building system. The archive describes creating a fighter’s look and abilities, so the player is not merely selecting an alternate costume for an existing combatant. The mode is intended to produce a personalized combatant inside the Mortal Kombat framework.
Kreate-A-Fatality extends that idea to finishers. Instead of choosing only from fixed finishing animations, players assemble a sequence of attacks into a custom fatality. This is a different type of customization from changing a preset character’s loadout: the player is authoring both the fighter and the finisher sequence.
MK11: customize a named fighter’s variation
MK11’s Custom Character Variation System works from established fighters. PlayStation’s product description says players can tailor a fighter’s appearance and attack style, while the publisher presents the system as a central feature of the game. You are customizing how a known character looks and plays rather than inventing a wholly new roster entry.
That distinction matters when choosing between the games. Armageddon favors authorship and novelty: create a fighter, then create a finishing sequence. MK11 favors controlled variation: start with a recognizable fighter and adjust the tools and presentation associated with that character. Neither approach is a direct replacement for the other.
Which game has the stronger single-player structure?
Armageddon’s Konquest adventure
Armageddon’s archive describes an expanded Konquest mode as a “full-blown adventure.” It is framed as more than a short tutorial or training mission, giving the game an exploration-oriented single-player identity alongside standard fights. The archive also presents Armageddon as a final battle among the series’ warriors, so Konquest is part of a larger end-of-an-era premise.

The important takeaway is structural: Armageddon asks the player to spend time in an adventure mode built around the game’s world and roster. The available description does not provide a completion-time figure or a quality ranking, so those should not be inferred from the “full-blown” label.
MK11’s cinematic time crisis
MK11’s campaign is built around a cinematic story in which a time crisis brings together characters from different eras. The publisher’s launch announcement presents this as a story intended for both established fans and new players. Its identity is therefore narrative and cinematic, with the time-bending premise explaining why past and present versions of fighters can appear together.
Armageddon and MK11 consequently make different promises in single-player. Armageddon emphasizes an adventure attached to a series-wide final battle; MK11 emphasizes a directed cinematic narrative built around temporal conflict. The sources do not establish which story is better, longer or more satisfying.

Armageddon’s documented side activities
A PS2 manual listing hosted by Manuals+ includes Kombat, Konquest, Kreate-a-Fighter, Motor Kombat, online play and network settings among its subjects. The listing identifies Motor Kombat as part of the PS2 package, giving Armageddon a notable nontraditional activity alongside its fighting and creation modes.
The manual page is a secondary-hosted document that says it was converted from an original PDF, so it is best treated as a manual listing rather than an independently authenticated current publisher support page. It nevertheless supports the narrow claim that Motor Kombat and the listed systems were documented for the PS2 version.
MK11’s challenge-and-collection loop
Warner Bros.’ launch announcement highlights Towers of Time and the Krypt. Towers of Time provide challenge-oriented activities, while the Krypt supplies an exploration and unlock-focused layer separate from ordinary matches and the story campaign. Together with character variations, they give MK11 a repeatable structure beyond the main narrative.
The contrast is about the kind of variety offered. Armageddon’s cited extras include a distinct kart-style side activity and tools for making content. MK11’s highlighted extras are rotating or structured challenges and a collection-oriented Krypt. The source material does not support declaring one set deeper or more enjoyable.
How does MK11’s combat differ from Armageddon’s documented feature set?
The reviewed Armageddon descriptions establish its roster and creation systems, but they do not provide enough information for a reliable frame-by-frame comparison, matchup chart or balance verdict. It would be misleading to infer competitive superiority from the size of its roster or the presence of custom fatalities.

PlayStation’s MK11 description identifies several concrete combat systems:
- Flawless Blocks: a defensive timing mechanic listed among MK11’s combat features.
- Crushing Blows: enhanced attacks identified in the product description.
- Offensive and defensive meters: separate resources that support combat decisions.
- Fatal Blows: powerful attacks that become available when a fighter’s health falls below 30 percent, according to the PlayStation description.
Those mechanics show that MK11 has a more explicitly documented modern resource and comeback system in the cited materials. They do not, by themselves, prove that MK11 is more balanced, more difficult or more competitive. Frame data, version-specific patches, matchup outcomes and online performance require separate technical evidence.
Which platforms do the games support?
Armageddon’s original hardware
The game archive lists Armageddon for PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox and gives an October 2006 release window without specifying an exact day. The material reviewed here does not establish current used-game stock, regional availability, modern-console compatibility or whether original online functions remain active today.

The archive’s feature copy says a custom fighter could be taken online. That is historical feature language, not evidence that the service is available now. Treat any present-day online claim as unverified unless current platform support is independently confirmed.
MK11’s launch and PlayStation compatibility
Warner Bros.’ April 23, 2019 launch announcement lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. PlayStation’s current product page identifies the PS4 version and says it is playable on PS5, while warning that some PS4 features may be absent when played on PS5.
On PlayStation, online play requires PlayStation Plus. The product page also lists Standard and Ultimate editions for PS4/PS5. Store prices and offers can change, so the edition name and platform should be checked at the time of purchase rather than treated as permanent pricing information.
Platform generation is a practical dividing line: Armageddon belongs to the PS2/Xbox era, while MK11 was designed for later consoles and PC. The cited material does not establish an easy, officially supported way to run Armageddon on current hardware, so do not assume modern compatibility.

Choose Armageddon if breadth and creation tools are your priority
- You want the exceptionally broad, advertised roster of more than 50 fighters.
- You want to build a fighter rather than only modify an established character.
- You are interested in assembling custom fatality sequences.
- You prefer an adventure-oriented Konquest mode.
- Motor Kombat and other legacy-era side content appeal to you.
Choose MK11 if modern structure and presentation matter more
- You want a cinematic story built around a time-bending crisis.
- You prefer customizing the appearance and attack style of named fighters.
- You want documented modern mechanics such as Flawless Blocks, Crushing Blows, meters and Fatal Blows.
- You value Towers of Time and the Krypt as ongoing activities outside the story.
- You need a game released for PS4, Xbox One, Switch or PC, with PS5 play available through the PS4 product listing subject to its feature caveat.
If you are buying for versus play
Do not use roster size, marketing descriptions or the existence of a customization system as a substitute for competitive evidence. The cited sources do not compare frame data, matchup balance, netcode, tournament viability or current player populations. Decide first whether your priority is local play, a specific character, story content or online competition, then verify the platform and version that supports that use.

Buying and setup checklist
Before choosing, identify the exact hardware you already own. Armageddon is documented for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, not for the later platforms on which MK11 launched. Its historical feature copy mentions online play, but that wording describes the original product and does not confirm a functioning service today. A used copy, regional release or console accessory may require separate checking.
For MK11, distinguish the platform from the edition. The launch announcement covers PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC, while the PlayStation listing identifies Standard and Ultimate editions for PS4/PS5. A PS4 copy can be playable on PS5, but PlayStation warns that some PS4 features may be absent there. On PlayStation, online play also requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. Those are practical requirements, not differences in the combat system.
If you are searching specifically for “Mortal Kombat 11 PS4,” confirm whether the listing is for the edition and region you want, whether it is physical or digital, and whether it includes the content you expect. Prices, stock, condition and offers change, so they should be checked at purchase rather than treated as fixed facts.

What the available descriptions do not settle
Feature lists cannot answer every comparison question. Nothing here establishes a definitive winner for balance, frame advantage, netcode, tournament viability, story quality, campaign length or current player population. The same caution applies to claims about which game is easier, deeper or more fun.
Those questions require different evidence: move data and version history for technical combat analysis, contemporary testing for online performance, and separately sourced reviews or play experience for judgments about narrative and mode quality. Keeping those categories separate prevents a large advertised roster from being mistaken for proof of competitive superiority, or a newer release date from being mistaken for proof of a better single-player campaign.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common misconceptions to avoid
- “More than 50” is not a precise audited total. It is the Armageddon archive’s advertised roster description.
- MK11’s launch announcement is not a final roster list. It names returning and first-time fighters without stating a complete number.
- Armageddon’s historical online wording is not current service confirmation. The cited archive does not establish present availability.
- PS5 compatibility does not mean every PS4 feature is identical. PlayStation notes that some features may be absent when the PS4 version is played on PS5.
- A larger roster does not prove better balance. No cited source supplies frame data, matchup statistics or a systematic competitive comparison.
- Character creation and character variation are not the same system. Armageddon lets you author a fighter and fatality; MK11 modifies a named fighter’s appearance and attack style.
- Motor Kombat should not be treated as a mode in every version without checking. The documented listing specifically concerns the PS2 manual.
Bottom line: two different kinds of Mortal Kombat package
Armageddon is the breadth-and-creation package: an advertised roster exceeding 50 fighters, Kreate-A-Fighter, Kreate-A-Fatality, an adventure-style Konquest and the Motor Kombat side activity documented in the PS2 manual listing. Mortal Kombat 11 is the cinematic-and-system package: a time-bending story, customizable variations for named fighters, modern combat mechanics and challenge and collection modes such as Towers of Time and the Krypt.
Pick Armageddon for legacy coverage and the freedom to invent a fighter and finisher. Pick MK11 for its newer platform context, structured character variation and documented modern combat systems. For either game, verify the exact edition, platform and any online or compatibility requirement before buying.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can you create a character in both games?
Armageddon includes Kreate-A-Fighter, which builds a fighter’s appearance and abilities, plus Kreate-A-Fatality for assembling a custom finisher. MK11’s Custom Character Variation System instead lets you customize a named fighter’s appearance and attack style.
What modes does Armageddon have that MK11 does not?
The PS2 manual listing documents Kombat, Konquest, Kreate-a-Fighter, Motor Kombat, online play and network settings. MK11’s publisher highlights Towers of Time and the Krypt. These are documented mode differences, not a quality ranking.
Which game has the better story mode?
They offer different structures. Armageddon’s Konquest is described as a full-blown adventure tied to a final battle among the warriors. MK11 uses a cinematic, time-bending story involving characters from different eras. The cited descriptions do not establish which is better or longer.

Can I play Armageddon online today?
The archive uses historical language saying a custom fighter could be taken online, and the PS2 manual listing includes online play and network settings. Neither establishes that the original service remains available today, so current support must be verified separately.
Does MK11 work on PS5?
PlayStation identifies the PS4 version as playable on PS5 but cautions that some PS4 features may be absent. Check the exact edition and platform listing before purchase; PlayStation online play also requires PS Plus.
The Bottom Line
Armageddon is the breadth-and-creation choice: more than 50 advertised fighters, Kreate-A-Fighter, Kreate-A-Fatality, Konquest and documented PS2-era extras such as Motor Kombat. MK11 is the cinematic-and-system choice: a time-bending story, named-fighter variations, modern combat mechanics, Towers of Time and the Krypt.
