Decrypt’s October 9, 2026, Morning Minute described a sharp Thursday slide in major cryptocurrencies followed by a partial rebound on Friday. Its figures are a dated snapshot, not current prices: by October 11, the Friday levels were already stale. The report attributed pressure to fund outflows, leveraged-position liquidations and other coincident factors, but did not establish how much each contributed.
What happened in the October 9 report
Decrypt said Bitcoin fell below $81,000 on Thursday, while Ethereum approached $2,400. All of the top ten digital assets were down over the preceding seven days. The article reported especially steep one-day declines for Zcash (11%), NEAR (16%), Pump.fun (11%) and Venice Token (10%); it also said Dogecoin and Chainlink had each lost double digits over the week. These are figures reported by Decrypt, not prices independently reconstructed from a historical market series. Decrypt’s October 9 Morning Minute is the source for the event figures.
In its Friday snapshot, Decrypt said Bitcoin had moved back above $82,000, Ethereum was nearing $2,500, and Zcash was positive on the day. Those prose figures describe the report’s moment in time; they should not be read as live market data. The page also displayed a separate Bitcoin price widget, which is not interchangeable with the dated price levels in the article.

Reported fund outflows
Decrypt reported that U.S. spot Bitcoin funds recorded $484.9 million in outflows on Wednesday and another $244 million on Thursday, putting October flows at a reported net negative $400 million. It also said Ethereum funds had eight consecutive outflow sessions, totaling $640 million. These historical amounts are attributed to Decrypt: the linked CoinGlass ETF dashboard describes daily net inflows, total net assets and fund-level flows, but did not provide the historical observations for those dates when inspected.

Liquidations and Ethereum positioning
The newsletter said nearly $1 billion in crypto long positions had been liquidated during the preceding 24 hours, with Ethereum longs hit hardest. The linked CoinGlass liquidation dashboard describes comparisons across time periods and exchanges, but the historical event data were not available there when inspected. Treat the liquidation total as Decrypt’s report, not as a figure confirmed by that live dashboard.
Decrypt also noted that Ethereum funding rates had turned negative midweek. Liquidations can intensify a fall when leveraged traders are forced to close positions, while negative funding can reflect bearish positioning in perpetual futures; neither observation alone shows what caused the initial decline or predicts what prices will do next.

Company news and macro stress
The report listed Tom Lee’s statement that Bitmine would stop accumulating ETH after reaching 5% of total supply, which it described as roughly 100,000 ETH away. It also pointed to an oil-price jump following attacks on Iranian tankers. Decrypt presented these alongside the market move, without measuring their separate effects or proving that either caused the selloff.

Does “Uptober turns sour” mean the October rally is over?
“Uptober” is crypto slang for the idea that October tends to be bullish. Decrypt’s article used the phrase but did not provide a historical October-return series to establish that seasonal pattern. A single sharp decline and a partial rebound cannot, by themselves, settle whether a broader trend has reversed.

Warner’s interpretation in the newsletter was that the rebound and what he viewed as an intact broader cycle thesis made a correction more likely than a collapse. He raised the possibility of a larger selloff near the anniversary of the October 10, 2025 downturn. Those are contemporaneous opinions, not a validated forecast; the anniversary date does not itself demonstrate a causal market signal.
How to assess correction versus a deeper reversal
Rather than treating one headline or the anniversary as decisive, compare developments across several observable areas. None is a stand-alone prediction tool.

- Price action: Did Bitcoin and other assets hold above, or revisit, Thursday’s reported lows? A Friday bounce is less informative if prices quickly give back the recovery.
- Fund flows: Did Bitcoin and Ethereum fund flows turn positive again or remain negative? Use dated historical flow records; a current dashboard view may not show the specific October observations cited in the article.
- Leverage and funding: Did liquidations subside and funding rates normalize after the reported flush, or did stressed positioning persist? Liquidation totals and funding rates describe positioning, not guaranteed future direction.
- Macro pressures: Did the reported oil-market stress and other external pressures ease or continue? Their persistence may matter to risk appetite, but the newsletter did not quantify their impact on crypto.
The distinctions matter: an initial drop can be amplified by forced selling, while persistent weak flows, renewed lows and ongoing external stress would be different evidence from a brief leverage unwind. The October 9 report alone does not resolve which pattern followed.
What the newsletter does—and does not—establish
The Morning Minute is useful as a contemporaneous account of the move and the explanations its author considered. Its ETF-flow and liquidation totals should remain attributed to Decrypt because the linked dynamic dashboards did not expose the historical figures for the event dates. The article reports several pressures occurring around the same time, but it does not isolate causation. Its correction-versus-collapse framing is therefore best read as analysis at that moment, not as a settled account of what happened afterward.

The newsletter also mentioned Citrini Research’s separate argument that tokenized assets and programmable onchain infrastructure could become useful as AI agents grow more capable. That long-term thesis is distinct from the short-term price decline and does not corroborate its causes.
