Moonquakes are real lunar seismic events, but they are not simply earthquakes on another world. Earth’s common earthquakes usually come from sudden fault slip driven by tectonic plate motion. The Moon has no Earth-style network of moving plates; its seismic signals come from several mechanisms, including Earth’s tides, extreme heating and cooling, meteoroid impacts, and faults activated as the Moon slowly contracts.

The contrast matters because lunar vibrations can continue for hours, while the main shaking from a typical earthquake usually lasts tens of seconds to minutes. Long-lasting shaking does not automatically mean that a moonquake releases more energy. Apollo seismometers detected thousands of lunar vibrations from 1969 through 1977, providing evidence about the Moon’s interior and about stresses that still shape its crust.

Are moonquakes the same as earthquakes?

“Moonquake” is an umbrella term for seismic activity on the Moon. An earthquake is also a seismic event, but the familiar terrestrial mechanism is only one part of lunar seismology. On Earth, tectonic plates move slowly, friction locks sections of faults, and stress eventually exceeds that friction. The fault then slips abruptly and sends seismic waves through the crust and deeper interior.

On the Moon, four natural source categories are recognized: deep moonquakes associated with tides, shallow moonquakes caused by brittle faulting, thermal moonquakes produced by severe temperature changes, and seismic waves from meteoroid impacts. Shallow moonquakes are the closest lunar analogue to tectonic earthquakes. Deep, thermal and impact events do not have one direct Earth equivalent.

That difference in terminology matters. “Moonquake” describes where the event happens, not one single physical process. When interpreting a lunar signal, scientists first ask whether it came from a deep tidal source, a shallow fault, thermal movement or an impact. The answer affects its depth, timing, wave pattern and relevance to surface operations.

How an earthquake starts on Earth

The U.S. Geological Survey defines an earthquake as “a sudden slip on a fault.” Earth’s tectonic plates move continuously, but fault surfaces do not slide smoothly because friction can hold them in place. Stress accumulates in the surrounding rock until it overcomes friction. The fault then ruptures, releasing stored elastic energy as seismic waves.

This process is often described as a repeating cycle: strain builds, a fault slips, the crust rebounds elastically, and friction locks the fault again. Plate boundaries provide the dominant setting for the largest and most frequent earthquakes, although damaging earthquakes can also occur within plates on older or reactivated faults.

Earthquakes generate several kinds of seismic waves that travel through rock and along the surface. Instruments use their arrival times and amplitudes to estimate an event’s location, depth and size. A dense terrestrial network can compare recordings from many stations, identify aftershocks and map a fault in considerable detail. Lunar measurements use the same basic physical principle, but the Moon has had far fewer instruments and much wider gaps between them.

The Moon’s four main seismic sources

Deep moonquakes driven by tides

Deep moonquakes occur hundreds of kilometres beneath the surface. NASA’s technical summaries place them approximately 700 to 1,000 kilometres deep. Their timing is strongly associated with gravitational tides raised by Earth; lunar analyses also consider solar tides. As the Moon’s interior is repeatedly deformed by these forces, stress can trigger seismic events far below the brittle surface.

These deep events are not the result of a lunar plate boundary. Their relationship with orbital and tidal cycles makes them a distinct class of seismic signal and gives scientists a way to study how the Moon responds internally to changing gravitational stresses. Because they recur under broadly similar tidal conditions, they can be compared as a population rather than treated as isolated surprises.

Shallow moonquakes from brittle faults

Shallow moonquakes are the lunar events most similar to ordinary tectonic earthquakes. NASA gives an approximate depth range of 50 to 220 kilometres. They occur when brittle rock slips along faults in the upper Moon.

As the Moon cooled, it contracted and its crust developed scarps and faults. NASA’s Apollo and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter work indicates that this global shrinkage happened in geologically recent times and may still be continuing. Tidal forces can add stress and help trigger slip on contraction-related faults.

A NASA-funded study led by Thomas Watters concluded that eight Apollo-era events were very likely produced by faults slipping as stress accumulated while global contraction compressed the crust, together with tidal forces. That interpretation means the Apollo instruments recorded evidence of a Moon that is still tectonically active, even though its tectonics do not resemble Earth’s plate system.

For a landing site, these are the events most likely to be associated with a mapped scarp or fault. Their presence does not mean every visible cliff is about to move, but it does mean that regional geology should be part of site selection and structural design.

Thermal moonquakes from extreme heating and cooling

The Moon experiences a lunar day and night that each lasts roughly two Earth weeks. Surface material can move from an extremely cold lunar night to intense daytime heating, producing large thermal expansion and contraction. Near-surface rock can crack or shift under that repeated stress, creating thermal moonquakes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thermal events are controlled by the temperature cycle rather than by a plate boundary or a single large fault rupture. Their shallow origin and dependence on the day-night cycle make them especially relevant to equipment exposed at the surface. A sensor may therefore see a recurring signal tied to illumination and temperature rather than to a deep fault or impact.

Meteoroid impacts

A meteoroid striking the Moon releases energy directly into the ground and sends seismic waves through the lunar interior. Apollo instruments detected impact-generated signals, allowing scientists to study how waves travel through the Moon while also helping estimate the population of impactors that reaches the lunar surface.

An impact signal is therefore both a natural hazard event and a useful experiment. Its source time and surface location can sometimes be constrained more directly than those of a naturally occurring fault slip. Impacts also remind engineers that seismic risk is not limited to faults: a surface strike can produce ground motion and may damage equipment directly or indirectly.

Why can a moonquake last for hours?

NASA summarizes the contrast this way: “Unlike an earthquake that lasts for tens of seconds to minutes, a moonquake can last for hours.” The unusually long signal is linked to the Moon’s dry, fractured near-surface material, which strongly scatters seismic energy and attenuates it weakly. Instead of fading quickly, waves can reverberate through the crust and regolith, producing a long coda after the initial arrival.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Earth, rock, fluids and complex crustal structures also shape a seismic record, but energy from the main rupture commonly loses coherence more quickly at a given station. On the Moon, repeated scattering can make arrivals harder to separate and can stretch the record long after the first wave. A long coda is thus a property of the transmitting environment as well as of the source.

Duration and energy are different measurements. A long, slowly decaying signal does not prove that every moonquake is larger or more energetic than an earthquake. The lunar record must be interpreted using the event’s source, wave amplitudes, distance, frequency content and local ground conditions, not duration alone.

Moonquakes and earthquakes compared

Feature Earthquakes Moonquakes
Primary causes Usually sudden fault slip after tectonic stress overcomes friction; plate motion supplies much of the stress. Deep tidal events, shallow contraction-related faulting, thermal cracking or movement, and meteoroid impacts.
Plate setting Many occur at boundaries between moving tectonic plates, though some occur within plates. No Earth-style moving plate network; faults reflect cooling, global contraction and local or tidal stress.
Approximate shallow-event depth Varies by earthquake and fault; no single depth applies to all events. NASA’s approximate range is 50–220 km.
Approximate deep-event depth Not a standard category for ordinary crustal earthquakes. NASA places deep moonquakes roughly 700–1,000 km below the surface.
Typical signal behavior Main shaking commonly lasts tens of seconds to minutes, followed by aftershocks and a diminishing coda. Vibrations can continue for hours because dry, fractured lunar material scatters energy and weakly attenuates it.
Main human concern Damage to populated areas, buildings, utilities, transportation and industrial infrastructure. Loads and vibration risk for future landers, habitats, instruments, vehicles and surface operations.
Scientific value Constrains fault behavior, crustal structure and Earth’s interior. Constrains lunar interior structure and stresses from tides, cooling, contraction and impacts.

The table is a mechanism-and-observation comparison, not a ranking of which world is “more active.” Earth has many more monitoring stations and a much longer instrumental record, while lunar event counts are shaped by the limited Apollo network. A lower observed count on the Moon cannot by itself establish a lower intrinsic rate.

What Apollo seismometers actually detected

Apollo seismometers operated on the lunar surface from 1969 to 1977 and recorded thousands of lunar vibrations. In a cited reanalysis of the remaining stations, researchers identified 28 shallow moonquakes during that operating period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That data set was extraordinarily valuable but geographically sparse. Instruments were placed only at Apollo landing sites, leaving large areas—especially the far side—without the dense network used in modern terrestrial seismology. Consequently, scientists can identify broad classes of lunar events and estimate their depths, but the exact locations, fault geometries and frequency of some events remain uncertain.

The record also mixes different source types. A vibration in the archive may be a deep tidal event, a shallow fault slip, thermal activity or an impact. Correctly classifying the source is essential before using an event to infer the Moon’s internal structure or seismic hazard.

The Apollo network’s greatest contribution was not a single headline magnitude. It established that the Moon is seismically active, supplied repeated observations for comparing source classes, and showed that seismic waves can probe the lunar interior. Future instruments placed in a distributed array would improve triangulation and make local hazard estimates more useful.

Does the Moon have tectonic plates?

No. The Moon does not have an Earth-like system of large, continuously moving tectonic plates whose boundaries dominate seismicity. Its crust is a single global shell broken by faults and scarps, and that shell has cooled and contracted over geological time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Global contraction can compress the crust and reactivate faults. Tidal deformation from Earth and the Sun can add cyclic stress. The combination creates tectonic activity without plate tectonics. This distinction prevents a common error: describing every moonquake as a result of “lunar plate movement.” Only the shallow fault-slip category is broadly comparable to an earthquake caused by tectonic stress, and even that comparison has to account for the Moon’s different history and environment.

How strong are moonquakes compared with earthquakes?

The available evidence does not establish a single, authoritative maximum moonquake magnitude that can be paired directly with a maximum earthquake magnitude. It is therefore not accurate to say, without qualification, that moonquakes are a fixed number of times weaker or stronger than earthquakes.

Magnitude measures the size of an event at its source, whereas the unusually long lunar coda describes how waves behave after they are generated. A small event in highly scattering lunar material can produce a prolonged record, while a much larger terrestrial earthquake can produce intense but shorter main shaking at a particular location. Meaningful comparisons require the same measurement scale, source type, distance and instrument calibration.

For practical purposes, the most important established contrast is not a simple strength ranking. It is that lunar seismic signals can persist for hours, lunar events arise from several mechanisms, and the Moon’s sparse monitoring network makes event statistics less complete than Earth’s.

Could a moonquake threaten a lunar base?

Yes. A future base would have to treat moonquakes as an engineering hazard, although the actual risk at any proposed site cannot be summarized by a single probability from the Apollo data. The hazard includes ground motion from shallow faulting, long-duration vibration that can fatigue structures or disturb instruments, thermal seismic activity near exposed equipment, and direct or indirect effects from impacts.

What a site assessment should examine

  • Nearby faults and scarps: Map contraction-related landforms and assess whether a planned landing zone or habitat lies close to a potentially active fault.
  • Depth and source type: Distinguish shallow fault events from deep tidal signals, thermal activity and impacts because each produces a different loading pattern.
  • Local ground conditions: Characterize regolith thickness, fracturing and surface layering, which influence how seismic energy is scattered and how long equipment may vibrate.
  • Orbital and thermal cycles: Include tidal timing and the severe lunar day-night temperature swing in operational and monitoring plans.
  • Network coverage: Do not rely on one sensor. A distributed array can improve source location and separate local disturbances from regional events.

Engineering responses

Designers can isolate sensitive instruments, anchor or flex structural connections, protect cabling and seals against repeated vibration, and provide operating modes that place delicate equipment in a safe state when a seismic alert arrives. Habitats and landing systems also need redundancy because a long signal may continue after the first noticeable arrival.

These are risk-management principles, not a claim that a particular lunar site is safe or unsafe. Apollo observations provide the baseline; modern, denser seismometer networks are needed to reduce uncertainty about event locations, recurrence and local ground response before permanent facilities are built.

Why lunar seismology reveals the Moon’s interior

Seismic waves sample material that cannot be reached by drilling. Their arrival times, paths, amplitudes and scattering contain information about layers, fractures and the physical state of the interior. Deep moonquakes are especially useful because their sources occur far below the surface and recur in association with tidal stresses. Impact signals provide additional events with a surface origin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpreting those records requires separating source mechanisms from the effects of the path through the crust and regolith. The Apollo network demonstrated that the Moon is seismically active and that its interior can be investigated with seismology, while its sparse geometry leaves important questions unresolved—most notably across the far side.

Seismology also links present-day measurements to lunar history. Evidence for contraction records how the Moon cooled, while thermal signals show how strongly the surface responds to the two-week heating-and-cooling cycle. Tidal events reveal how the body deforms under external gravity. Together, these signals provide different tests of the same interior rather than one all-purpose “moonquake signature.”

Frequently asked questions

What causes moonquakes?

They have several causes: deep events associated with Earth’s and the Sun’s tides, shallow slips on contraction-related faults, cracking or movement from extreme lunar heating and cooling, and meteoroid impacts.

Why do moonquakes last longer than earthquakes?

NASA reports that a moonquake can last for hours, compared with tens of seconds to minutes for an earthquake. Dry, fractured lunar material strongly scatters seismic energy and weakly attenuates it, allowing waves to reverberate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are shallow moonquakes the same as earthquakes?

They are the closest lunar analogue because both involve brittle fault slip. However, lunar faults formed in a cooling, contracting crust rather than at boundaries between moving Earth-like plates.

How deep are moonquakes?

NASA’s approximate range for shallow moonquakes is 50–220 kilometres. Deep moonquakes occur roughly 700–1,000 kilometres below the surface.

Did Apollo detect many moonquakes?

Yes. Apollo instruments recorded thousands of lunar vibrations from 1969 through 1977, including 28 identified shallow moonquakes in the cited reanalysis of the remaining stations.

Can a moonquake damage a habitat?

It could impose ground motion and prolonged vibration on a future habitat, lander, vehicle or instrument. The risk depends on source, distance, local ground conditions and structural design, and cannot yet be reduced to one universal probability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a long signal mean a stronger moonquake?

No. Duration reflects the way waves travel through lunar rock and regolith. Event strength must be assessed from source size, amplitudes, distance and instrument calibration.

Why are far-side moonquakes harder to locate?

Apollo seismometers were deployed only at landing sites, leaving the far side with little direct coverage. A denser, distributed network would improve location and source classification.

What readers should remember

  • Earthquakes usually begin when tectonic stress overcomes friction and a fault slips.
  • Moonquakes include four recognized natural categories: deep tidal events, shallow fault slips, thermal events and meteoroid impacts.
  • NASA places shallow moonquakes at about 50–220 km depth and deep moonquakes at roughly 700–1,000 km.
  • A moonquake can last for hours because the dry, fractured Moon weakly attenuates and strongly scatters seismic energy.
  • The Moon has no Earth-style tectonic plate boundaries, but global contraction and tidal forces can still activate faults.
  • Apollo recorded thousands of vibrations and 28 identified shallow moonquakes from 1969 to 1977; the sparse network means future bases still need better local monitoring.
