The Monte Carlo method is a family of computational techniques that estimates a quantity by repeatedly sampling from a probability model and aggregating the results. It can estimate probabilities, expected values, integrals, and outcomes of simulated systems. The result is generally an estimate—not an exact answer—and its reliability depends on both the sampling process and whether the model fits the question.

What does “Monte Carlo method” mean?

Monte Carlo is not one fixed algorithm. The name describes methods that use repeated random samples to estimate a quantity that may be difficult to calculate directly. A common approach is to average the outcomes produced by those samples.

For a probability, the estimate is the fraction of simulated outcomes in which an event occurs. For an expected value, it is the average of the sampled function values. An integral can also be expressed as an expectation by choosing a suitable sampling distribution and weighting the sampled values appropriately. The University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Monte Carlo lecture notes explain this connection.

How does the method work?

  1. Define the target. Specify the probability, expected value, integral, or system outcome to estimate.
  2. Choose a model and sampling scheme. Define the probability distribution or simulated process that represents the problem, and determine how to generate samples from it.
  3. Generate repeated samples. Draw outcomes from the chosen distribution or model.
  4. Evaluate each outcome. Record the event, function value, or system result relevant to the target.
  5. Aggregate and assess. Calculate a sample fraction or average, then assess its uncertainty and whether the model and sampling scheme are appropriate.

For instance, to estimate the probability that an event occurs, simulate outcomes under the model and divide the number of times the event occurs by the total number of simulated outcomes. This estimates the modeled probability; it does not establish that the model accurately represents the real-world process.

How does Monte Carlo accuracy change with sample count?

For the basic sample-average estimator discussed in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s CS 357 notes, the law of large numbers supports convergence toward the expected value, and the notes give asymptotic error behavior of O(1/√n), where n is the number of samples. This describes a gradual rate: reducing typical error by a factor of two can require roughly four times as many samples under the same basic conditions.

This is not a guarantee that every run will be within a particular error of the answer, nor does it describe every Monte Carlo algorithm. The behavior of a particular estimate can depend on its sampling design, the variability of outcomes, and whether samples are independent. Rare events may be especially difficult to estimate by simple sampling because few simulated outcomes may capture them.

Sample count addresses sampling variability, not model validity. A large run can produce a precise estimate of the wrong quantity if the model or distribution does not represent the question. The Illinois notes describe the basic estimator and its error rate in CS 357’s Monte Carlo materials.

When is Monte Carlo a good choice?

Monte Carlo can be useful when a direct calculation is difficult and it is practical to generate representative samples. It is particularly attractive for some high-dimensional calculations, where deterministic approaches may become difficult to apply. But dimension alone does not decide the method: a low-dimensional, smooth integral may be handled more efficiently by deterministic quadrature, while a complex or high-dimensional problem may make sampling a practical option.

Before choosing it, consider:

  • Problem structure: Is there an analytic or deterministic method that exploits the shape of the problem?
  • Sampling feasibility: Can you generate samples from a defensible distribution that represents the question?
  • Precision needs: How much uncertainty is acceptable, and how much computation is needed to reduce it?
  • Model quality: Are the assumptions and inputs credible for the real-world quantity being estimated?
  • Cost: Is the runtime for useful precision reasonable compared with available alternatives?

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics emphasizes that Monte Carlo is versatile for difficult numerical problems where other methods may not be practical, but method choice depends on the case. Its discussion of Monte Carlo in scientific computing also places the approach among a broader set of numerical tools rather than treating it as a universal replacement.

Does Monte Carlo require truly random numbers?

In theory, Monte Carlo methods are described in terms of random samples. In practical computing, pseudorandom number generators are commonly used: they produce sequences from deterministic algorithms that are designed to behave like random samples for the intended use. The term “Monte Carlo” is often used broadly for methods implemented with pseudorandom inputs.

SIAM distinguishes Monte Carlo methods using random inputs from pseudo-Monte Carlo methods that use systematically chosen points which may appear random. These approaches should not be reduced to a simple practical split between “random” and “deterministic”; the computational convention and the sampling design matter.
