Mont Blanc’s highest visible point measured 4,807.47 metres (15,773 feet) on 17 September 2026—1.88 metres higher than the 4,805.59-metre figure publicised in 2023. The mountain’s bedrock did not suddenly rise by two metres. The change is in the summit’s variable snow-and-ice cap, which wind, snowfall, rain, temperature and sunlight continually reshape.
What changed at Mont Blanc?
The 2026 campaign measured the snow-covered summit at 4,807.47 metres. Compared with the last widely publicised pre-2026 measurement, 4,805.59 metres in 2023, that is an increase of 1.88 metres in three years.
That number describes the altitude of the highest point of the summit dome on the day of the survey. It is not a measurement showing that Mont Blanc’s underlying rock has moved upward by nearly two metres. The visible summit is a layer of snow and ice over rock, so its height can rise or fall as the cap gains, loses and redistributes material.

The recent measurements show short-term variation, not steady growth

The sequence matters. If the mountain were simply getting taller each year, the readings would rise in a consistent direction. Instead, the summit was measured higher in 2024 and 2025 than in 2026. The 2026 result is therefore a comparison with 2023, not evidence of a one-way upward trend.

Why the summit height changes
Snow accumulation and precipitation
Fresh snowfall can build the dome, while rain, melting and sublimation can remove ice or snow. The balance depends on the weather before and during each survey, so two campaigns held in different seasons or weather conditions may record noticeably different altitudes.
Wind and redistribution
Strong winds move snow across the exposed summit. They can scour one area and deposit snow in another, changing both the summit’s shape and the location of its highest point without adding material to the mountain’s rock.

Temperature and sunlight
Warm conditions and solar exposure accelerate melt and alter the density and structure of the cap. Colder periods can preserve accumulated snow and ice. These effects help explain why a measurement can decline after a higher reading the year before.

Technical references place Mont Blanc’s summit rock at approximately 4,792 metres. The snow-and-ice layer above it is reported as roughly 16 to 18 metres thick, although its thickness and surface are not fixed. The difference between the rock elevation and the visible summit is why the headline altitude changes while the geological mountain remains essentially the same.

How the 2026 survey measured the summit
Surveyors, mountain guides and scientists reached the summit at daybreak on 17 September 2026 and spent more than two hours collecting readings. The campaign combined several techniques rather than relying on a single handheld altitude reading:
- Satellite positioning: high-precision satellite-positioning instruments fixed the summit’s position and elevation.
- Drone photogrammetry: a drone captured more than 1,300 images, which were processed into a three-dimensional model of the snow cap. The model helps identify the highest point and document the cap’s shape.
- Ground-penetrating radar: radar examined the ice and the rock beneath it, helping distinguish the variable snow-and-ice layer from the underlying summit.
The expedition carried nearly 30 kilograms of equipment. Savoie News described the 2026 effort as the campaign’s 25th year, involving 32 participants, 11 rope teams and approximately 2,500 metres of elevation gain.

What “Mont Blanc grew” gets wrong
“Growth” is convenient shorthand for a higher measured summit, but it can mislead readers into imagining tectonic uplift. Jean des Garets, president of the Haute-Savoie chamber of surveyors, captured the distinction by saying: The summit is in perpetual movement.
In this context, perpetual movement means the snow-and-ice crown is continually changing in thickness and form. The 4,807.47-metre result is a precise observation of that crown on a particular date, not a new permanent height for the mountain’s bedrock.

How to interpret the 2026 number
- Use 4,807.47 metres when referring to the 2026 measured altitude of the snow-covered summit.
- Use 1.88 metres for the difference from the 2023 published figure of 4,805.59 metres.
- Do not describe the result as a two-metre rise in Mont Blanc’s rock or as proof of continuous annual growth.
- Remember that the 2024 and 2025 readings—4,808.51 and 4,808.76 metres—were both higher than 2026.
- Treat each altitude as a dated snapshot whose value depends partly on recent snow and weather conditions.
Why repeated surveys are useful
Regular campaigns create a record of how the summit cap responds to weather and climate. Combining satellite positioning, 3-D imagery and subsurface radar also gives researchers more than a headline altitude: it records the cap’s geometry and its relationship to the rock below. That makes future measurements easier to compare while preserving the essential caveat that the visible summit is a changing snow-and-ice surface.
The Bottom Line
Mont Blanc’s 2026 summit measurement is 4,807.47 metres—1.88 metres above the 2023 published figure—but the apparent increase reflects a changing snow-and-ice crown, not a two-metre rise in the mountain’s bedrock.
