Monster Rancher Advance is the Pokémon-like game added to Nintendo Switch Online on October 14, 2026. The 2001 Game Boy Advance monster-raising simulation is included with a paid Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, alongside Metal Slug Advance and Kururin Paradise.
What was added to Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo added Monster Rancher Advance to the Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics catalogue on October 14, 2026. The game originally launched in 2001 through Nintendo and Koei Tecmo Games. Nintendo’s Japanese pages call it Monster Farm Advance; “Monster Rancher Advance” is the name used for the English release.
The catalogue software is included for members, but you need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription to play Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics. A standard Nintendo Switch Online plan does not provide access to this catalogue.

Monster Rancher Advance is a turn-based creature-battling game, but it is not a conventional role-playing game. There is no large overworld to explore, and you do not build a party by catching creatures in the wild. Its central loop is creating monsters, raising them, training their abilities and entering battles.

Nintendo’s description centers on an ancient-letter tablet. You enter words from everyday life, and the word you choose determines the monster that appears. That unusual creation system makes experimentation part of the game: ordinary words can produce different monsters, giving you a reason to try new inputs rather than simply following a fixed capture route.
Monsters can also be combined later to create stronger hybrids. That fusion system, together with training and battles, gives Monster Rancher Advance a more focused simulation feel than Pokémon’s exploration-and-collection structure.

Monster Rancher Advance versus Pokémon
| Feature | Monster Rancher Advance | Pokémon-style baseline |
|---|---|---|
| How you obtain creatures | Create one by entering a word into the ancient-letter tablet. | Typically catch or receive creatures during an adventure. |
| Core activity | Raise, train and battle monsters. | Explore, collect, develop a team and battle. |
| World design | Focused on management and competition rather than a large explorable world. | Usually built around towns, routes, dungeons and a wider journey. |
| Combining creatures | Monsters can be fused into stronger hybrids. | Creature evolution is generally handled through each species’ own progression. |
| Genre emphasis | Monster-raising simulation with turn-based battles. | Adventure RPG with creature collection and battles. |
| Switch access | Included in the Game Boy Advance catalogue for Expansion Pack members. | Depends on the specific Pokémon title and Nintendo service availability. |
That distinction matters if you are expecting a full Pokémon substitute. Monster Rancher Advance is better understood as a compact training-and-battling experiment: its appeal comes from discovering what a word creates, improving that monster and testing it in competition.

The other Game Boy Advance additions in the same update
The October 14 update was a three-game drop rather than a single release:
| Game | Original release | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Monster Rancher Advance | 2001 | Monster-raising simulation and turn-based battling |
| Metal Slug Advance | 2004 | Action shooter |
| Kururin Paradise | 2002 | Action and puzzle game |
Metal Slug Advance shifts the update toward run-and-gun action, while Kururin Paradise is built around action-puzzle play. Neither is a creature-raising game, so Monster Rancher Advance is the relevant choice for anyone looking for a Pokémon-adjacent experience.

Is Monster Rancher Advance worth trying?
Sam Cawley of GAMINGbible describes the game through personal nostalgia, recalling playing it on road trips and around the Nintendo GameCube era. His verdict is equally direct: “Monster Rancher Advance rocks and it’s worth a go if you’re into Pokémon.” That is an individual recommendation, not an independent review score or a measured performance claim.
The game is a good fit if you enjoy raising systems, repeated training decisions, unusual creature-generation mechanics and battles that reward preparation. It may be a poor fit if what you want from Pokémon is a large story campaign, extensive exploration or a traditional catch-and-collect loop.
