Choose PS5 or Xbox Series X if responsive combat and a 60fps target are your priorities. Choose Switch 2 if playing handheld is the reason you want the game. PS5 Pro is the visual-feature leader, while Xbox Series S is the least flexible technically.
Capcom’s published targets make the trade-off clear: PS5 and Xbox Series X offer 30fps Resolution, 40fps Balanced and 60fps Framerate modes; Switch 2 targets 30fps in both TV and handheld play; Series S is listed at 1080p and 30fps without an alternate performance mode.

The short answer
For a television-based hunt, the best versions are the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X releases. They share the same published mode structure and 4K output target, giving you a choice between sharper 30fps presentation, a 40fps Balanced mode for 120Hz displays, and a 60fps Framerate mode. Pick between them mainly on the console ecosystem you already own.
Buy the Switch 2 version when portability outweighs motion smoothness. Its TV Resolution mode targets 2240×1260 at 30fps, TV Framerate mode targets 1920×1080 at 30fps, and handheld mode targets 1536×864 at 30fps. You gain a full handheld option, but not a 60fps mode.
#1 Best Overall
PS5 Pro is the premium choice for image features because it adds ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Xbox Series S is suitable when access or a lower-cost console matters more than frame-rate options: Capcom lists it at 1920×1080 and 30fps with no alternate performance mode.
Official mode comparison
The figures below are Capcom’s published targets, not guarantees that every scene will hold the target continuously. Capcom warns that rendering resolution changes with system load, that upscaling is applied when rendering resolution falls below output resolution, and that frame rate may drop in some high-load situations.
| Platform and mode | Published output or rendering target | Frame-rate target | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Resolution | 3840×2160 output | 30fps | Highest listed image-resolution priority on the base PS5. |
| PS5 Balanced | Not separately stated | 40fps | Designed for displays capable of 120Hz output. |
| PS5 Framerate | Not separately stated | 60fps | The smoothest listed target on PS5. |
| Xbox Series X Resolution | 3840×2160 output | 30fps | Equivalent published resolution and mode targets to PS5. |
| Xbox Series X Balanced | Not separately stated | 40fps | Requires a display that can accept 120Hz for the intended output. |
| Xbox Series X Framerate | Not separately stated | 60fps | The smoothest listed target on Series X. |
| Switch 2 TV Resolution | 2240×1260 | 30fps | Sharper of the two listed TV priorities, still capped at a 30fps target. |
| Switch 2 TV Framerate | 1920×1080 | 30fps | Lower TV resolution, but the same published frame-rate target. |
| Switch 2 handheld | 1536×864 | 30fps | Designed for the built-in portable screen. |
| Xbox Series S | 1920×1080 | 30fps | Capcom lists no 40fps or 60fps alternative. |
Resolution numbers describe the output or target stated by Capcom; they should not be read as a promise that the game renders every frame at that exact internal resolution. Dynamic resolution and upscaling are part of the performance design.

How the TV modes work
Switch 2 provides two TV priorities. Resolution mode targets 2240×1260 at 30fps, while Framerate mode targets 1920×1080 at 30fps. Because both modes target 30fps, switching between them is primarily an image-quality decision rather than a responsiveness upgrade. Resolution mode is the logical choice when you sit close to a large television and prefer a sharper image; Framerate mode may be useful when you prefer the lower output target or when a particular scene benefits from the lighter workload.
Handheld specifications
Handheld mode targets 1536×864 at 30fps. That makes Switch 2 the only version in this comparison that can be played away from a television without streaming from another device. The 30fps target is a real portability trade-off: hunts remain playable, but camera movement, attack timing and traversal will not have the same fluidity as the 60fps mode available on PS5 and Series X.
Dynamic resolution and heavy scenes
Capcom’s performance note says, “Render resolution changes depending on system load. If rendering resolution falls below output resolution, upscaling will be applied.” It also says, “Frame rate may drop in some high-load situations.” These qualifications apply when comparing Switch 2 with every other platform: the listed numbers are targets, and complex fights or busy environments can reduce performance.

Who should buy it
- Choose Switch 2 if handheld play is essential rather than merely convenient.
- Choose it if your friends or household primarily use Nintendo hardware and the portable format will make you play more often.
- Accept the purchase only if a 30fps target is comfortable for you; the TV modes do not provide a 60fps option in Capcom’s table.
- Do not choose it expecting the same 4K-output or high-frame-rate choices as the home-console versions.
PlayStation 5: the strongest all-round home-console version
Base PS5 modes
Capcom lists 3840×2160 output with a 30fps target in Resolution mode. Balanced mode targets 40fps, and Framerate mode targets 60fps. The three-mode structure lets you prioritize visual sharpness, an intermediate level of smoothness, or the highest listed frame rate without changing hardware.

Why the 40fps option matters
PlayStation’s launch guidance describes Balanced mode at 40fps as “great for players with displays capable of outputting 120hz.” A 120Hz screen can present 40fps evenly because each game frame occupies three display refreshes. On a 60Hz television, that mode cannot deliver its intended cadence, so a 60fps-capable display is not enough; check that the screen and console are configured for 120Hz output.
Visual feature limits on the base model
The supplied Capcom platform table does not list ray tracing for the base PS5. If advanced lighting features are more important to you than the price of the standard console, the PS5 Pro is the relevant PlayStation model.
Who should buy it
PS5 is the safest recommendation for a new home-console buyer who wants all three performance targets, a 4K output target in Resolution mode and broad access to the game’s existing player base. It is also the straightforward choice for anyone who already owns a PS5 and does not need portability.
PS5 Pro: best for visual features
PlayStation identifies ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) as PS5 Pro features for Monster Hunter Wilds. The Pro listing retains 30fps Resolution, 40fps Balanced and 60fps Framerate modes. This makes it the most feature-rich console option for players who want enhanced lighting and reconstruction technology while retaining a choice of frame-rate priorities.

Treat its advantage as a feature set—ray tracing and PSSR—not as a promise that every hunt will look or run identically after future patches.

Xbox Series X: equivalent performance targets in the Xbox ecosystem
Xbox Series X has the same published structure as PS5: 3840×2160 output and a 30fps target in Resolution mode, 40fps in Balanced mode, and 60fps in Framerate mode. For responsiveness and headline output targets, it is a direct alternative to the base PS5.
Series X makes the most sense when you already use Xbox hardware, controllers, accessories or an established Xbox friend group. The available facts do not establish current subscription availability or a special pricing advantage, so make the decision on your existing ecosystem and the console’s other games rather than assuming a particular subscription benefit.
As with PS5, the 40fps mode is intended for a display capable of 120Hz output. If your television is limited to 60Hz, compare the 30fps Resolution and 60fps Framerate modes instead.

Xbox Series S: access at the cost of flexibility
Capcom lists Xbox Series S at 1920×1080 and 30fps, with no alternate 40fps or 60fps mode in the performance table. That is the clearest technical compromise in the lineup. You do not get the 4K output target of Series X, and you cannot switch to a published high-frame-rate mode for more responsive combat.
Series S is reasonable when you already own one or when keeping hardware cost and size down is the primary objective. It is a poor match for a player who specifically wants 60fps, a 120Hz Balanced option or the sharpest television presentation. If you are choosing new hardware solely for Wilds, move to PS5, Series X or Switch 2 according to the priorities above.
How to choose based on your display
If you have a standard 60Hz television
Use Resolution mode when you prefer the sharpest listed output, or Framerate mode on PS5 and Series X when smoother camera and combat motion matters more. Switch 2’s two TV choices remain 30fps targets, so display refresh rate does not unlock a faster mode there. Series S has only its listed 30fps mode.
Rank #4
If you have a 120Hz television or monitor
PS5 and Series X can use the 40fps Balanced target, provided the display accepts 120Hz from the console. This mode is a middle ground: smoother than 30fps without selecting the lower image-quality priority associated with a 60fps mode. You can still choose 60fps Framerate mode when responsiveness is more important than resolution.
If you play mostly in handheld mode
Only Switch 2 meets that requirement natively. Its 1536×864 handheld target and 30fps target are the relevant specifications; neither PS5 nor Xbox Series consoles offers an equivalent portable mode.

Capcom released Monster Hunter Wilds for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on February 28, 2025. Capcom announced the Switch 2 version for December 4, 2026. The Ascendance expansion is planned for 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC.
Capcom reported worldwide sales above 10 million copies after launch. It describes crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC as a first for the series. The Switch 2 announcement continues that cross-platform direction, but the supplied announcements do not specify every Switch 2 crossplay rule or whether feature parity will change before release. Confirm the final platform and matchmaking details when Nintendo’s edition launches.
Capcom also reported cumulative Monster Hunter series sales of 131 million units as of June 30, 2026. That figure is a franchise statistic, not a performance measure for any particular Wilds version.
Decision guide: which version fits each player?
| Your priority | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 60fps combat and smooth camera motion | PS5 or Xbox Series X | Both list a 60fps Framerate target. |
| 40fps on a 120Hz display | PS5 or Xbox Series X | Both list a 40fps Balanced target intended for 120Hz-capable displays. |
| Ray tracing and PSSR | PS5 Pro | Those features are specifically identified for the Pro model. |
| Native handheld play | Switch 2 | It is the only platform with a listed handheld mode. |
| 4K-output target on a home console | PS5 or Xbox Series X | Both list 3840×2160 output in Resolution mode. |
| Lowest hardware commitment among the listed Xbox consoles | Xbox Series S | It provides access but is limited to the listed 1080p/30fps mode. |
| Existing console ownership | Stay on your current compatible system | The core mode targets are close between PS5 and Series X; buying another console adds cost without adding portability. |
Buying checklist
- Decide where you will play. If you need the game on a train, sofa or another room without moving a console, Switch 2 is the only native handheld option.
- Set your minimum frame rate. If 60fps is non-negotiable, limit the choice to PS5 or Xbox Series X. If 30fps is acceptable for portability, Switch 2 becomes viable.
- Check the display. A 120Hz-capable television or monitor is required to use the intended 40fps Balanced presentation on PS5 or Series X.
- Choose your visual priority. Select PS5 Pro if ray tracing and PSSR justify its premium; otherwise, compare base PS5 and Series X on the ecosystems you already use.
- Account for release timing. PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC editions launched in 2025, while the Switch 2 edition is scheduled for December 4, 2026.
- Recheck launch information. Capcom’s targets can be adjusted by patches, and the company explicitly warns about dynamic resolution and frame-rate drops in high-load situations.
What the published figures do not tell you
The official tables establish targets and output modes, but they do not constitute a controlled, post-launch measurement of frame-time consistency, image quality in every environment, regional game prices or exact Switch 2 retail editions. A target of 60fps is therefore a useful buying guide, not a guarantee that every effect-heavy encounter will remain at 60fps. Likewise, the resolution figures should be read alongside Capcom’s dynamic-resolution and upscaling note.
Later patches can change mode behavior. Before purchasing a newly released edition, check the current version notes and the final store listing for your region, especially for Switch 2 and the planned Ascendance expansion.
Verdict
For most home-console players, PS5 and Xbox Series X are the best versions because they offer the same broad choice: 30fps Resolution, 40fps Balanced and 60fps Framerate targets, with a 3840×2160 output target in Resolution mode. Pick PS5 Pro instead when ray tracing and PSSR are worth paying for. Pick Switch 2 only when handheld play is the deciding feature and you accept a 30fps target in both TV and portable modes. Choose Series S for access and convenience, not for maximum image quality or responsiveness.
