Yes—Monster Hunter Rise is a good fit if you enjoy learning a weapon, hunting monsters repeatedly, and turning the parts you collect into stronger gear. Sunbreak is worth adding if you want more of that loop: it is a substantial paid expansion with new ranks, monsters, locales, story elements, and hunting actions. If repeated hunts and gear crafting sound tedious, neither is likely to be a good match.
What makes Monster Hunter Rise appealing?
Rise is built around a clear cycle: prepare for a hunt, fight a large monster, collect materials, then craft or upgrade weapons and armor for tougher encounters. The rewards feed directly into the next challenge, so the appeal depends heavily on whether learning fights and improving your equipment feels satisfying.
The game offers 14 weapon types, each with its own combat approach. Wirebugs enable fast movement and weapon-specific Silkbind attacks, while Wyvern Riding adds another way to interact with monsters during a hunt. Palico and Palamute companions can assist in combat. You can hunt solo or with up to four players, according to the official PlayStation game description.

Sunbreak is a premium expansion, not a standalone replacement for Rise; it requires the base game. Capcom described it as a “massive premium expansion” and announced new quest ranks, locales, monsters, hunting actions, and story elements. In practical terms, it extends the same combat-and-upgrade structure with a larger set of hunts and a higher tier of progression. See Capcom’s Sunbreak announcement for the announced scope.
#1 Best Overall
- Journey to the West - In addition to the plethora of new hunts to complete, the immersive story will task Kamura’s valiant hunters with researching the secrets behind the puzzling anomalies plaguing the distant Kingdom. This pursuit will take players on a journey across the sea to a new base of operations called Elgado Outpost, where they will investigate powerful creatures known as the Three Lords, each inspired by staples of Western horror.
- New and Returning Monsters - The game will introduce Malzeno, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the lupine Fanged Wyvern Lunagaron, the towering Garangolm, and new subspecies such as Blood Orange Bishaten. Hunters will also encounter numerous fan-favorite and returning species from previous Monster Hunter games including the voltaic Astalos.
- Combat Evolved - The “Wirebug” mechanic that allows for unparalleled freedom of movement and mobility returns! Hunters using the new facilities at Elgado Outpost will also be able to master all-new combat options and Wirebug techniques for all weapon types. More information on these new abilities will be shared in the future.
- New Locales - Featuring all-new maps with no loading times such as the newly revealed Citadel locale, the continuous gameplay ensures that players will remain on their quests as soon as the hunt begins, without transitions between areas.
- Hunting Options - Play solo, or join up to three other hunters in online co-op play on Nintendo Switch or PC. The Nintendo Switch system also allows for hunting anywhere, anytime and with anyone via a local connection!
That makes Sunbreak the natural next purchase for someone who already enjoys Rise and wants more of it. Capcom reported on June 4, 2025, that Sunbreak had surpassed 10 million cumulative units sold worldwide. That milestone indicates broad uptake, but it does not establish whether the expansion will suit your tastes or how many copies it has sold since then. The announcement is available in Capcom’s June 4, 2025 release.
Should you buy Rise alone or with Sunbreak?
| Option | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Rise by itself | Players who want to try the weapon-based hunting and crafting loop before committing to an expansion. | Confirm that the listing is for the base game and matches your platform and region. |
| Rise plus Sunbreak | New buyers already confident they want the base game and its additional ranks, monsters, locales, story, and hunting actions. | Compare the bundle with separate listings and check your library first so you do not buy Rise twice. |
| Sunbreak alone | Existing Rise owners looking to continue with the expansion. | Sunbreak requires the base game; owning the expansion without Rise is not enough to play it. |
Nintendo’s US listing describes a Switch bundle containing both products and notes that they are also sold separately. The listing is digital; physical bundle availability has varied by region, so verify the exact format and regional listing before buying a disc. Check Nintendo’s US bundle page for its current contents and terms.

Will the gameplay suit you?
Rise is a stronger fit if you:
- Like action combat that rewards learning both your weapon and monster patterns.
- Enjoy repeating encounters to earn materials and build better equipment.
- Want the option of solo hunts or cooperative play.
- Are interested in experimenting with several weapon types and mobility tools.
Think carefully if you:
- Prefer a mostly linear story over a progression built around repeated hunts.
- Dislike crafting gear from materials or revisiting encounters to improve equipment.
- Do not want to spend time learning combat systems and enemy patterns.
These fit recommendations follow from the game’s described structure, rather than from a claim that every player will respond to it the same way.

Metacritic listed Sunbreak at an 86 Metascore from 45 critic reviews and an 8.0 user score from 247 ratings when checked on October 7, 2026. Those figures are a dated snapshot and can change. Review excerpts shown there praised the amount of added content and combat flexibility, while noting drawbacks around multiplayer discovery and some endgame tuning. Treat the scores as one reception signal, not a substitute for deciding whether the hunting loop appeals to you. See Metacritic’s Sunbreak page.

Nintendo’s US Switch listing says the game supports solo play on one system and local wireless or online groups of one to four. It also lists Nintendo Switch Online as required for online play on Switch. Multiplayer requirements and availability can differ by platform and region, so check the relevant platform listing for your setup rather than assuming the Switch terms apply everywhere.
