A healthy monorepo uses short-lived topic branches, frequent integration into a continuously tested default branch, and CI that builds only the projects affected by a change. Large binaries and generated output belong in Git LFS or object storage, not ordinary Git history. There is no universal Git maximum repository size: practical limits depend on the hosting service, hosting model, plan, and configuration.

The limits below are vendor-published guidance and defaults, not cross-platform benchmarks. Values are identified by vendor and hosting model and reflect documentation checked on 16 October 2026.

What branching model works best in a monorepo?

Use small, cohesive topic branches or pull requests. Merge them frequently into the default branch through a continuously tested integration path. A branch should represent one change that reviewers can understand and CI can validate; it should not become a second long-lived version of the repository.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep topic branches short-lived

Create a branch from the current default branch, make the smallest coherent change, and open a pull request as soon as the change is reviewable. Rebase or update the branch regularly when the default branch moves. Short-lived branches reduce the number of unrelated changes that must be reconciled at once and make conflicts easier to diagnose.

For a change that spans several applications or libraries, keep the work in one coordinated pull request when possible. Make the dependency edges explicit in build metadata so CI can identify which consumers need testing. If independent delivery is safer, split the work into ordered pull requests and document the temporary compatibility contract between them.

Use the default branch as the integration path

  1. Create a topic branch from the latest default branch.
  2. Run fast local checks and push the branch.
  3. Open a pull request with a description of affected projects, schema or API changes, migrations, and rollback considerations.
  4. Require the relevant CI checks and at least the repository’s normal review approvals.
  5. Update the branch when required checks are stale or the base branch has changed.
  6. Merge promptly after approval, then monitor the post-merge integration and deployment checks.

Do not use a permanent branch for every team or project unless you have a specific release-management reason. Long-lived team branches turn integration into a periodic high-risk event and allow incompatible assumptions to accumulate.

How do you merge safely when many teams share one repository?

Make checks match the change

Required checks should cover the changed project and its dependency consumers, plus repository-wide policies such as formatting, licensing, security, and build-configuration validation. A change that touches a shared library should trigger its dependent graph; a documentation-only change should not wait for every product build.

Control a busy pull-request queue

GitHub’s repository-limit guidance recommends staying within 1,000 open pull requests against the same branch and one merged pull request per minute on the GitHub service. The same guidance suggests configuring a merge queue so every queued pull request does not have to be individually brought fully up to date before merging. See GitHub’s repository limits documentation and the corresponding GitHub documentation source; these are GitHub service figures, checked 16 October 2026, not generic Git limits.

GitHub’s rebase-and-merge operation is limited to 100 commits. If a pull request exceeds that limit, split the work, use a different approved merge method, or compress the branch history before opening the final review. Preserve meaningful commits when they help reviewers or release auditing, but avoid a branch containing thousands of unrelated fix-up commits.

Use merge queues or trains deliberately

A queue should test the commit that is expected to land, not merely the pull request branch in isolation. Keep the queue moving by making fast required checks genuinely fast, reserving expensive integration suites for changes that need them, and cancelling superseded runs. Watch queue age, failure rate, and throughput; a queue that grows faster than it drains is an integration capacity problem, not just a reviewer problem.

How should CI avoid rebuilding the entire monorepo?

Treat the repository as a dependency graph rather than one indivisible application. A useful pipeline combines changed-path filters, dependency analysis, reusable workflow components, remote build caches, and staged validation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use staged validation

Stage Typical trigger Scope
Fast feedback Every push and pull-request update Formatting, linting, unit tests, configuration validation, and builds for directly affected projects
Integration validation Approved pull request or merge-queue candidate Changed projects plus their declared dependency and consumer graph
Post-merge verification Default-branch update Deployment packaging, cross-project integration tests, and environment checks
Full-repository validation Scheduled run or high-risk change All supported projects, toolchain combinations, and repository-wide policy checks

Path filters are useful only when they reflect real ownership and dependency relationships. A change to a shared build plugin, lockfile, compiler, or base container may affect every project even when application source paths are unchanged. Encode those fan-out rules explicitly rather than relying on a simple directory match.

Reduce checkout and build overhead

  • Cache package-manager downloads and compiled build outputs with keys that include lockfiles, toolchain versions, and relevant source state.
  • Use shallow clones when history is not required; GitHub notes that shallow clones impose less server cost than full clones.
  • Use sparse checkout or partial clone where the build system can operate without every path and object.
  • Keep reusable workflow definitions small and versioned so a change to pipeline logic is itself reviewable.
  • Separate independent jobs and connect them with explicit needs or dependent stages so an unrelated failure does not block every project.

GitLab CI/CD defaults to watch

GitLab’s monorepo guidance says to optimize how CI/CD jobs interact with the repository. GitLab’s documented default limits, checked 16 October 2026, include the following. GitLab.com applies vendor-defined service limits; administrators can configure different limits on GitLab Self-Managed and GitLab Dedicated.

GitLab CI/CD limit Default value Operational response
Downstream pipelines in one hierarchy 1,000 Split very large hierarchies and trigger only affected components
Included pipeline configuration files 150 Consolidate repeated includes and remove unused templates
Job-log size 100 MB Reduce noisy output, archive detailed logs separately, and keep the job summary useful
Parallel pipelines in a merge train 20 Limit train fan-out and prioritize the checks needed to establish merge safety

These values come from GitLab’s monorepo guidance and GitLab’s CI/CD limits documentation. They are defaults for the documented GitLab configurations, not universal limits for every GitLab installation.

How big is too big for a Git monorepo?

Size alone is an incomplete test. Measure compressed repository storage, clone and fetch time, checkout time, reference count, CI startup time, pipeline fan-out, and merge-queue throughput from representative developer and runner locations. A repository can be technically below a storage threshold yet operationally painful because every change starts hundreds of jobs or because a normal clone takes too long.

GitHub recommends optimizing CI clone strategy or using a repository cache server. It also recommends Git Large File Storage for binary files and storing generated files outside Git, such as in object storage. The source is GitHub’s repository limits page; every number in the table is specific to GitHub’s documented service guidance and enforcement.

GitLab repository-size policy depends on hosting model

GitLab.com repository limits are predefined by the service. On GitLab Self-Managed and GitLab Dedicated, administrators can set limits globally, per group, or per project. The repository-size calculation includes repository files and Git LFS objects in the configurations described by GitLab. When a project reaches its limit, GitLab can restrict pushing, creating merge requests, and uploading LFS objects.

GitLab’s administrator documentation uses a 10 GB per-repository limit as an example. That setting includes Git LFS objects even when the LFS data is stored externally. The example is an administrator-configured policy, not a promise that every GitLab installation has the same limit. See GitLab’s repository-size documentation and GitLab’s account and limit settings.

Where should binaries and generated files go?

Use Git LFS for versioned large files

Git LFS stores pointer files in the normal Git history while the large content is handled by LFS storage. This is appropriate for binaries that must be versioned with source, such as selected media, model files, or test fixtures. Define tracking rules before adding the files, and make sure every developer and CI runner has LFS support and access to the LFS endpoint.

Use object storage for generated output

Build packages, coverage archives, dependency bundles, logs, and other reproducible outputs generally belong in artifact or object storage. Retain them according to release and audit requirements, but do not commit every generated version to the source repository. Generated files multiply repository growth and make every clone and fetch pay for historical data that a developer rarely needs.

Find large blobs early

Set a size check in pre-commit or CI, review new binary extensions, and periodically inspect historical objects. Removing a file from the current working tree does not remove it from history; if a large blob has already spread through many commits, plan a coordinated history rewrite or a migration to LFS.

What should teams monitor as the monorepo grows?

  • Storage: compressed repository size, LFS usage, object counts, and growth rate.
  • References: active and stale branches, tags, pull-request refs, and automation-created references.
  • Developer experience: clone, fetch, checkout, and clean-build times from representative regions and network conditions.
  • CI economics: queue wait, startup time, cache-hit rate, changed-project accuracy, fan-out, cancellation rate, and runner consumption.
  • Integration flow: merge-queue age, conflict rate, failed-after-merge rate, and completed merges per unit of time.
  • Configuration: pipeline includes, generated configuration size, downstream hierarchy depth, and log volume.

Alert before a vendor limit is reached. A warning threshold gives the team time to delete stale references, split pipeline hierarchies, improve caching, or change artifact retention without interrupting delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you clean up a repository safely?

  1. Identify the largest current and historical blobs, stale references, generated paths, and files that should be in LFS or object storage.
  2. Stop new growth first by adding tracking rules, CI checks, and artifact retention policies.
  3. Choose the least disruptive cleanup: delete unused references, migrate large versioned files to LFS, or rewrite history when old blobs are the dominant cost.
  4. Schedule a maintenance window and communicate the new remote history, required clones, and merge freeze.
  5. After rewriting, verify the default branch, tags, releases, CI references, deployment pins, and backups before reopening normal work.

GitLab warns that after a history rewrite, users must reclone or fetch all remote changes and rebase ongoing work. Otherwise, a later push from an old clone can revive files that were deleted from the rewritten history. Apply the same coordination discipline on any hosting service: every clone, mirror, bot, and build runner that can push must be updated.

How do GitHub, GitLab.com, and GitLab Self-Managed differ?

Compare the hosting model before adopting a number as a design target. The documented facts support this decision framework:

Comparison area GitHub GitLab.com GitLab Self-Managed or Dedicated
Repository-size policy GitHub publishes service guidance and enforcement values, including the figures in the table above Predefined service limits Administrators can set global, group, or project limits
LFS in size calculation GitHub recommends LFS for large files Repository-size calculation includes Git LFS objects in documented configurations Administrator settings can include LFS objects, including when data is stored externally
CI fan-out and configuration Use path-aware workflows, caches, and checkout optimization; exact limits vary by service configuration GitLab documents defaults for hierarchy, includes, logs, and merge-train parallelism Administrators may configure limits and must capacity-plan runners and storage
Administrative control Service-level controls documented by GitHub Service-level controls set by GitLab Customer administrators control applicable settings and infrastructure
Plan and pricing entitlements Not stated in the cited limits documentation Not stated in the cited limits documentation Not stated in the cited limits documentation

Do not transfer a GitHub number to GitLab, or a GitLab.com default to a self-managed installation. Confirm the current limit for the exact vendor, hosting model, plan, and administrative configuration before setting repository budgets.

Practical decision checklist

  • Choose short-lived topic branches and merge through a continuously tested default branch.
  • Declare dependency edges so shared-library changes test their consumers.
  • Run fast affected-project checks on every change, broader integration checks at merge, and full-repository checks on a schedule or for high-risk changes.
  • Use shallow, sparse, or partial checkout and remote caches where your platform and build tools support them.
  • Keep binaries in Git LFS and generated output in object storage.
  • Track storage, references, clone cost, CI fan-out, pipeline configuration, logs, and merge throughput.
  • Label every limit in an internal runbook with vendor, hosting model, plan or default status, and verification date.
  • Coordinate every history rewrite with developers, mirrors, bots, and runners that hold clones.
