Monitoring indoor air quality in 3 locations can reveal useful patterns only when the measurements and conditions behind them are clear. The title does not identify the locations, devices, pollutants, dates, readings, or project records, so no specific nine project lessons or findings can be responsibly attributed to those sites here. The nine lessons below explain what a sound three-location monitoring project should establish—and how to interpret its results without treating a consumer monitor as a complete air-quality assessment.
What an indoor air quality monitor measures
A monitor detects only the pollutants or environmental conditions covered by its installed sensors. Depending on the model, that may include particulate matter, radon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), temperature, or humidity. Some devices measure one factor; others combine several sensors. A reading is not a verdict on every aspect of indoor air quality.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes their role this way: “Low-cost air pollution monitors can provide some information about the levels of specific pollutants or environmental factors in a space and how those pollutant levels or environmental factors are impacted by activities in a space.” EPA’s guidance on low-cost monitors and indoor air quality explains their scope and limitations.

9 lessons for monitoring indoor air quality in 3 locations
1. Define the question before choosing a monitor
Decide what you want to learn: whether a particular activity coincides with changes in a pollutant, how conditions vary over time, or whether locations differ on a specific measure. That question determines which sensor is relevant and what schedule, placement, and context to record. EPA’s guidance on air sensor use and study design emphasizes planning and quality assurance as foundations for useful data.
#1 Best Overall
- Know your air – An Alexa air quality monitor that makes it easy to understand what’s in your indoor air.
- Track and measure – Our indoor air quality monitor keeps tabs on 5 key factors: particulate matter (PM 2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity, and temperature.
- Stay informed – Get an indication of current indoor air quality from the color-coded LED, and detailed information and an easy-to-understand air quality score in the Alexa app.
- Real-time alerts - Get notifications on your phone or announcements on Echo devices when Alexa detects poor indoor air quality.
- Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.
2. Check sensor coverage rather than relying on the product name
“Indoor air quality monitor” does not mean that a device measures every important pollutant. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact sensor types and measured factors. Do not infer radon, carbon monoxide, or any other pollutant from a general air-quality score unless the device documentation confirms that it has the relevant sensor.
3. Treat the three locations as comparable only when the methods are
A meaningful comparison requires clarity about the measurement at each site: pollutant or condition, device and sensor, placement, time window, activity or context, and whether values are raw or adjusted. If locations used different devices, schedules, rooms, or procedures, describe those differences. A change between two readings may reflect the method or circumstances rather than a difference in the locations themselves.
4. Put the sensor where people are, with room for air to move
Follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions. For general indoor siting, EPA recommends the typical breathing zone—about 3–6 feet high—with free airflow. Keep a sensor away from nearby pollution sources, such as a toaster, and away from sinks such as air cleaners. See EPA’s guide to siting and installing air sensors.

5. Record what was happening when readings changed
Activities in a room can affect the factors a monitor measures. Record relevant events and conditions alongside the data—for example, whether a window or door was open, an appliance was in use, or the heating or cooling system was running. Without that context, a trend may be visible but difficult to explain.
6. Avoid windows, doors, and HVAC outlets when measuring typical room conditions
These locations can expose a sensor to rapidly changing temperature and humidity or other conditions that do not represent average indoor concentrations. Choose a location with representative airflow instead of placing the unit beside a window, doorway, or HVAC duct. The right placement still depends on the question: monitoring a specific source or airflow is different from estimating typical conditions in an occupied room.
7. Interpret readings as trends, not automatic health thresholds
EPA notes that widely accepted indoor concentration limits do not exist for most pollutants and that alert thresholds on consumer monitors are set by manufacturers. A warning or color-coded score therefore does not, by itself, establish that a room is safe or unsafe. Use readings as informational evidence about the factors the device measures, and consult pollutant-specific guidance when a concern warrants further evaluation.

8. Keep temperature, humidity, and device condition in view
Readings can be affected by placement, time in use, processing methods, temperature, relative humidity, and the presence of multiple contaminants. Accuracy and precision information for marketplace monitors is limited, and sensors have finite lifespans; check the manufacturer’s service or replacement guidance. For humidity, EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity at 30–50 percent and suggests checking it with a moisture or humidity gauge. That is general guidance, not a finding from the three locations.
9. Report gaps and limits as part of the result
For each location, document the monitor and sensor types, measured factors, placement, dates and duration, relevant activities, and any missing data. Explain whether devices and procedures were consistent. These details let readers distinguish observed patterns from assumptions and judge how far the results can be applied. EPA’s 2022 Enhanced Air Sensor Guidebook covers planning, sensor selection and setup, data collection, evaluation, analysis, interpretation, communication, and action.

- Location description and room or area monitored.
- Device, sensor types, and pollutants or conditions measured.
- Sensor position and height, including proximity to windows, doors, ducts, sources, or air cleaners.
- Start and end dates, duration, sampling schedule, and any gaps.
- Relevant activities and environmental context during the monitoring period.
- Whether readings are raw or adjusted, and any processing applied.
If the project records do not establish these details or the readings themselves, do not present specific lessons as firsthand findings. General siting and interpretation guidance can explain how to run a project, but it cannot supply the missing locations, measurements, or outcomes.
When a general monitor is not enough
A consumer monitor is an informational tool, not a substitute for pollutant-specific testing or a regulatory measurement. EPA describes air sensors as useful for supplemental, non-regulatory monitoring, including examining trends. If you need to assess radon, use a radon-specific test; EPA’s indoor air quality guide discusses radon testing. Do not assume a general-purpose monitor detects it unless its sensor specifications say so.
