Usually, an ordinary computer monitor does not run the kind of applications that a virus infects. But a display can contain firmware, and smart or specialized monitors may have network and software features that introduce security risks. The practical question is what the device can do and how it is connected—not whether it shows a strange image.
What “a virus in a monitor” can mean
A computer virus is malicious software that runs on a computing system. A conventional desktop display mainly receives video from a computer and shows it; it is not a general-purpose PC running the applications where ordinary viruses typically operate.
Monitors still contain firmware: software that controls hardware functions. The UK National Cyber Security Centre explains that firmware is critical to a device’s secure operation in its device firmware guidance. Firmware compromise is therefore a real category of risk, but it is different from saying a typical monitor commonly catches a PC virus. NIST’s BIOS Protection Guidelines describe the consequences of malicious firmware modification on PC client systems; they concern BIOS, not monitor firmware, and do not establish that monitors are infected.
Which kinds of monitor have more to consider?
Security exposure depends on the device’s functions and connections. A simple display connected only by a video cable has a different profile from a device with networking, embedded computing, or USB data features.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security discusses firmware and peripheral security in its peripheral-device guidance. The UK NCSC also provides advice on using peripherals securely. These sources explain why connected peripherals merit attention; they do not give a prevalence rate for malware in consumer monitors.
Can a monitor infect your computer?
A standard HDMI or DisplayPort video connection should not be treated as a common malware route simply because it connects a monitor to a computer. The risk picture changes when a device also has data-capable USB, networking, or other computing functions. The interface and what it carries matter.

USB peripherals deserve separate caution. Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency warns that malware can spread through USB devices and that keyboard-emulating devices can pose a threat. Its USB malware advisory recommends avoiding devices from unfamiliar or untrusted sources. That is sound peripheral hygiene, not evidence that ordinary video cables infect computers.

What the patient-monitor case does—and does not—show
In a July 2, 2025 update, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration described cybersecurity vulnerabilities in certain Contec CMS8000 patient monitors and Epsimed MN-120 monitors, which use the same device under a different label. The FDA reported risks including unauthorized remote control, a software backdoor, and patient-data exfiltration after internet connection. These are specialized medical devices with network and clinical functions, not ordinary desktop displays.

The FDA said the available patch removes networking functionality, leaving local monitoring, and warned that installation requires specialized expertise. It told patients and caregivers not to install the patch themselves. The agency stated at that time that it was not aware of cybersecurity incidents, injuries, or deaths related to the vulnerabilities. This case shows that some devices called monitors can have meaningful cybersecurity exposure; it does not show that consumer computer monitors commonly contain viruses.
How to respond if you suspect a monitor problem
Screen flicker, distorted colors, dead pixels, or pop-ups on the connected computer do not by themselves diagnose malware in a monitor. The official guidance cited here does not provide a consumer test that confirms a monitor infection. Start with the host computer, connected accessories, and the specific monitor’s features instead.

- Identify the exact model and capabilities. Check whether it is a basic display, a smart display, or a device with USB hub, network, or embedded-computing functions.
- Check the connected computer and accessories. Look for suspicious behavior on the host and review attached USB devices, especially anything from an unknown or untrusted source.
- Use only manufacturer-provided updates. Follow the instructions for the exact model; do not install firmware from an unofficial source. The FBI recommends keeping operating systems, software, and firmware up to date in its guidance on internet-connected devices.
- Limit connectivity only when safe and appropriate. For a nonessential smart display, disconnecting network access may be a reasonable precaution while seeking help. For medical or other specialized equipment, follow clinical-facility, regulator, or qualified technical-support instructions; do not improvise firmware changes.
- Contact the right support channel. Ask the monitor manufacturer or your organization’s IT team for model-specific advice. Seek qualified support for devices whose failure could affect health or safety.
What is not established
The sources cited here do not establish how often ordinary consumer monitors are infected, nor do they provide a monitor-specific consumer detection test. They also do not support claims that visual defects prove infection, that antivirus software can clean monitor firmware, or that every USB-connected monitor is dangerous. Treat firmware compromise as a possible device-security issue, not as the default explanation for a display problem.
