If you mean DisplayPort and HDMI, neither one always unlocks more than the other. The right choice is the connection that your computer or console, monitor, cable, and any dock or adapter all support at the resolution, refresh rate, color settings, and features you want. Check the labels and specifications for your exact devices; the title alone does not identify their ports.
How to find which connection supports your monitor’s best mode
- Identify the ports. Look for the DisplayPort logo or label, or the familiar HDMI label, on both the monitor and the source device. If a connection runs through a dock or adapter, include that in the signal path.
- Choose the mode you want. Note the resolution and refresh rate, and whether you need HDR or a particular color depth or chroma format. A high refresh rate at one resolution may have different requirements from a lower refresh rate at a higher resolution.
- Check the device specifications. Find the supported modes for the exact input on the monitor and output on the computer, graphics card, or console. Port version names and connector shapes by themselves do not establish the mode a product supports.
- Check the cable and intermediaries. Confirm that the cable category and any dock or adapter support the same signal. If the desired mode is unavailable, check each link in the chain to find where support stops.
A standard’s maximum is an example of what the standard can enable, not a promise that every product or connection will reach it. The monitor, source, selected operating mode, cable, dock, or adapter may set a lower limit.
What DisplayPort and HDMI can support
The standards show why a port name alone is not enough to declare a winner. They describe capabilities that manufacturers may implement in different products; check the actual port specifications before relying on a mode.

For DisplayPort 2.1, VESA published the specification on October 17, 2022. The version name still does not tell you which modes a particular product implements; use the manufacturer’s specifications for the relevant port. VESA’s DisplayPort 2.1 announcement.

Can USB-C connect to a monitor?
Sometimes. USB-C is a connector shape; video support depends on the device. VESA’s September 22, 2014 announcement described DisplayPort Alt Mode as carrying DisplayPort audio and video, USB data, and power through USB Type-C. It also noted that lane allocation affects whether video and SuperSpeed USB can operate together. That announcement explains the capability, but a USB-C socket alone does not prove a computer, tablet, or dock supports video output. Only if the cable you have is not rated for the signal your devices need. For HDMI systems requiring bandwidth up to 48 Gbps, HDMI Licensing Administrator identifies Ultra High Speed HDMI as the cable category for systems up to that bandwidth. Confirm that the source, display, and any intermediary support the target mode, then match the cable category to the required signal; the cable category cannot add support missing elsewhere in the chain. Which port should you use?
- If one connection is documented to support your target mode end to end and the other is not, use the supported one.
- If both support the mode, either may work; choose based on the specifications and features you need, and whether you are using a direct connection or a dock or adapter.
- If the monitor will not offer the resolution or refresh rate you expect, verify the monitor input, source output, cable, dock or adapter, and selected display settings against the manufacturers’ specifications.
