If your monitor is hard to see in a bright room, first change where the light falls: move the display so windows and bright fixtures are to its side, not reflected in the screen, and soften direct sunlight with blinds or drapes. Then adjust the monitor’s brightness to suit the room. These steps address reflected light before you consider a filter or a different display.
First, tell glare from a generally dim or washed-out screen
A distinct image of a window or lamp on the display points to a reflection. Bright light can also wash out the image even when you do not see a sharp reflection. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) notes that bright lights shining on a display can make work difficult to see; glare may also contribute to eyestrain, headaches, or awkward viewing posture. Increasing brightness alone does not remove the reflected light source.
Change the setup before buying anything
- Turn the monitor relative to windows and lights. Place the screen at right angles to windows and bright fixtures where possible, so those sources are beside the display rather than directly in front of or behind it. This is the first-line placement advice from OSHA and Lenovo.
- Control bright daylight. If sunlight is the problem, use blinds or drapes to reduce the light reaching the screen. Reposition furniture or the monitor if needed so a bright window is not in your direct field of view.
- Soften artificial lighting. Prefer diffuse, indirect, or shielded light. Move or shade a desk lamp that makes a bright reflection, and avoid intense, uneven lighting in your field of view.
- Adjust the picture for the room. Use the monitor’s brightness and contrast controls as ambient light changes. Brightness can help the image remain comfortable to view, but it will not fix a window or lamp reflected on the screen.
- Clean the display carefully. Dust can contribute to glare. Follow the cleaning directions for your specific screen rather than applying an unsuitable cleaner or method.
When a screen filter or hood makes sense
Try a glare filter only if placement and lighting are not enough
A monitor-mounted glare filter may help when you cannot change the room or desk position. Match the filter to the display’s exact screen dimensions and aspect ratio. Check visibility after installation: filters can reduce image clarity, and OSHA advises that an installed filter should not significantly decrease visibility. Lenovo also cautions that filters can affect clarity.
Consider a hood when light reaches the display from the surroundings
A monitor hood blocks some environmental light from reaching the screen. EIZO describes using a purpose-made hood or making one from suitable sheet material with a matte-black screen-facing surface. Do not cover the monitor’s heat-release vents; a hood that obstructs ventilation is not a safe fix. See EIZO’s LCD monitor guidance.

What to compare if you replace the monitor
There is no single screen finish that suits every bright room. A matte surface can spread or absorb reflected light, which may make reflections less distracting; a glossy surface can look clearer but may show more distinct reflections. Compare the monitor’s reflection handling and brightness for your actual room, as well as its finish. Also check whether its stand lets you place and angle the display usefully. Reflection handling and brightness are separate considerations, so a high brightness rating alone does not establish how well a screen handles reflections. RTINGS’ reflection-testing explanation discusses these tradeoffs. Samsung’s ViewFinity S8 (S80PB) is one manufacturer-marketed example of a matte display, not a universal recommendation or independent test result.
Why the screen can seem harder to see
Reflected or excessive bright light competes with the displayed image, reducing its apparent clarity. It can lead people to lean or twist toward the screen to find a better viewing angle. Reducing the reflection at its source—by changing placement, shielding the light, or controlling daylight—targets the cause more directly than simply turning brightness up.
