To determine whether a monitor will fit an arm, compare the monitor’s weight without its stand with the arm’s complete supported range, match the exact VESA hole pattern, and verify the desk mount and screen-clearance limits. A listed maximum screen size is only a secondary guide: a heavy, curved, ultrawide or portrait-mounted display can exceed an arm’s weight, geometry or balance limits even when its diagonal size appears acceptable.
What a monitor arm’s weight rating really means
An arm’s capacity is the load its mechanism and mounting plate are designed to support. The relevant load is the display assembly that remains on the arm, not the factory stand that you remove. Fellowes states in its monitor-arm FAQ: “When selecting a monitor arm the weight of the monitor stand should NOT be considered.”
After removing the stand, add anything that will stay attached to the arm: a webcam mounted on the display, a speaker bar fixed to the monitor, a heavy cable bundle suspended from the arm, or a security lock. Fellowes advises counting accessory weight when checking its published limit. Use the monitor’s manual or specification label for the bare-display mass rather than estimating from screen size.

Gas-spring and counterbalanced arms can have a minimum load. If a screen is lighter than that minimum, the arm may rise, drift or fail to hold position even though it is far below the maximum. Compare your calculated load with both ends of the stated range:

We only recommend installing it on a wooden desk, preferably with no crossbeam blocking the underside.
- Minimum capacity: the lightest load the mechanism can reliably balance.
- Maximum capacity: the heaviest permitted load, including accessories that remain attached.
- Per-screen rating: for multi-monitor products, confirm whether the figure applies to each screen or to the complete assembly.
Fellowes lists ranges by arm series and describes a weighted 75/100 mm mount for arms with higher minimum capacities. A weighted mount can help satisfy a minimum-load requirement, but it does not increase the arm’s maximum rating.
How to read VESA compatibility
“VESA compatible” is not a single size. It refers to the spacing of threaded mounting holes on the rear of the display, measured horizontally by vertically in millimetres. The common patterns in the specifications reviewed here are 75×75 mm and 100×100 mm. A monitor with one pattern is not automatically compatible with an arm plate that supports another.
Measure the hole pattern
- Remove the stand and locate the four threaded holes, usually arranged as a square or rectangle.
- Measure centre-to-centre horizontally and vertically; do not measure the outside of the recess.
- Record the pattern, such as 75×75 mm or 100×100 mm, and the thread size specified by the monitor manual.
- Check whether the holes are recessed, surrounded by a raised bezel, or blocked by a cable cover. These conditions can require spacers or a different plate.
Some displays use larger or non-square patterns, and some ultrawide models place the holes in a deep recess. An arm that accepts only 75×75 and 100×100 mm cannot be assumed to fit those designs.
Screw length and recess depth matter
An arm can have the correct hole spacing yet still be unsafe if its supplied screws are too short to engage the monitor threads or too long and bottom out inside the display. Use the screw diameter and maximum insertion depth specified by the monitor maker. Spacers can bridge a shallow recess, but they must sit flat and leave the plate fully supported; never force a screw that meets resistance before the plate is tight.
Why screen size is only a secondary fit check
Diagonal size is useful for an initial search, but capacity and geometry decide the real fit. ACT notes that its maximum-size indication depends on both weight and VESA compatibility, and that portrait orientation may reduce the usable maximum size. A large, light office monitor can be easier for an arm than a smaller display with a heavy panel, power supply or curved chassis.

- Quick Setup with Tool-Free VESA Mounting: Set up in just three easy steps! Our computer monitor mount upgraded VESA plate enables tool-free mounting, saving time and avoiding complex installation. We offer two desk mounting options: C-clamp mounting for desks 0.39″–2.56″ thick, or grommet base mounting for desks 0.39″–2.95″ thick.
Overall width is also important when placing two or more arms. Fellowes points out that monitor width affects multi-arm configuration. Measure the complete bezel-to-bezel width, then check the arm’s reach, rotation clearance and the desk space available for adjacent screens. In portrait mode, the display’s height becomes the dominant clearance dimension; a nominal diagonal limit does not guarantee that the panel will clear a shelf or wall.
Curved and ultrawide displays
Curvature moves the centre of mass away from the mounting plate and can increase the torque on the arm. ACT lists different limits for its AC8329: up to 16 kg for a standard monitor and up to 13 kg for a curved monitor. Treat those as model-specific ratings, not a universal curved-monitor rule. For an ultrawide or deeply curved screen, confirm the arm manual’s width, depth and curvature guidance in addition to the VESA pattern.
A practical compatibility worksheet
Record these values before choosing an arm:
- Display weight with the stand removed.
- Weight of permanent accessories and cable management attached to the arm.
- VESA hole pattern and thread specification.
- Screen width, height and depth; note whether portrait orientation is planned.
- Desk thickness at the intended mounting point.
- Available rear clearance for a clamp, or a suitable location for a grommet hole.
Then apply this check: total suspended load = bare monitor weight + permanent accessory weight. The total must fall inside the arm’s published minimum-to-maximum range. Separately, the VESA pattern, screw specification, screen dimensions and desk interface must all match. Passing one test does not compensate for failing another.
How to verify an arm step by step
1. Identify the exact monitor model
Use the model code on the rear label or in the operating system’s display information. Manufacturers can sell visually similar revisions with different weights or hole patterns. Download the manual for that exact code and note the net weight without the stand.
2. Calculate the suspended load
Add only items that the arm will carry. Exclude the original stand, because it is removed, but include a mounted webcam, light, speaker bar or unusually heavy cable bundle. Keep the calculation in kilograms or pounds to match the arm’s specification and do not round a value upward into an unverified rating.

- Installed In 3 Minutes: The 1-piece design monitor arm simplifies the installation, so all necessary hardware is included; The setup can be completed in 3 minutes. Step 1: Affix the bracket to your table; Step 2: Attach your monitor to the VESA plate; Step 3: Adjust tension according to your monitor weight.
- Two mounting options : You may choose to use either a C-clamp or grommet mount. For best results, make sure your table meets the following criteria: wood tabletop is recommended; the underside of the tabletop should ideally be free of any beams or panels that may interfere with the installation; the tabletop thickness and grommet mounting can support 0.59"-3.54”.
3. Compare both capacity limits
Read the arm’s technical table rather than relying on a retailer’s headline number. Confirm whether the range is per screen, whether it changes for curved displays, and whether a minimum-load accessory or weighted plate is required.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Match the VESA pattern and hardware
Confirm that the arm plate explicitly lists your measured spacing. Check thread diameter, screw length, recess depth and any required spacers. If the plate uses a quick-release mechanism, verify that the release bracket itself is rated for the same load.
5. Check orientation and reach
For portrait use, compare the display’s full height with the available vertical clearance. For multiple screens, add each panel’s width and allow space for swivel movement. A screen-size label cannot replace these measurements.
6. Verify the desk interface
Clamp and grommet mounts impose different requirements. Measure the desk thickness at the clamp location, check for a rear overhang or cable tray that blocks the jaws, and confirm that the desktop material can tolerate the concentrated load. A grommet mount needs a suitably positioned hole and access beneath the desk to tighten its hardware.
7. Inspect after installation
Before attaching the display, tighten the base according to the manual and test the arm through its movement range. After mounting, confirm that every screw is fully engaged, the plate is flush, and the arm holds position without creeping. Recheck fasteners after the first adjustment session.

Current specification examples
The following figures illustrate how to compare specifications. They are ratings for named models, not universal limits for every arm.
| Model | Published monitor capacity | VESA patterns | Screen guidance | Desk or special notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MSI MPG MT201RG | 2–20 kg (4.4–44 lb) per screen | 75×75 mm and 100×100 mm | Not stated in the reviewed specification | Separate clamp and grommet desk-thickness ranges; verify the exact millimetre limits in MSI’s current manual (MSI, accessed 2026). |
| BenQ Ergo Arm BSL01 | 4.4–24.2 lb | 75×75 mm and 100×100 mm | 17–40 inch screens | Use the weight and VESA limits together; the diagonal range does not override them (BenQ, accessed 2026). |
| ACT AC8329 | Up to 16 kg standard monitor; up to 13 kg curved monitor | 75×75 mm and 100×100 mm | Size indication depends on weight and VESA compatibility; portrait use may reduce the practical maximum | Curved-screen limit is lower than the standard-monitor limit (ACT, accessed 2026). |
| SIIG models | Varies by model | Varies by model | Varies by model | SIIG’s product page and comparison table show that weight limits, VESA patterns and mounting features differ across its range; check the exact model. |
Worked fit decisions
Light monitor on a high-minimum arm
Suppose the display and permanent accessories total 3 kg, while the selected arm is rated from 4 to 12 kg. The 3 kg load is below the minimum even though it is below 12 kg, so the arm may not balance. Choose an arm with a lower minimum or use a manufacturer-approved weighted mount if the model supports one.
Heavy monitor within the maximum but wrong pattern
A 12 kg display fits inside a 2–20 kg range, but its holes measure 100×200 mm and the arm lists only 75×75 and 100×100 mm. The load test passes; the VESA test fails. Do not drill the plate or attach only two screws. Find a mount explicitly rated for 100×200 mm or an adapter approved for that exact display and arm.
Curved display near the limit
A curved screen that weighs 14 kg would be below ACT AC8329’s 16 kg standard-monitor figure but above its 13 kg curved-monitor figure. The curved rating controls, so that combination is outside the published limit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAdapters and unusual mounting patterns
A VESA conversion mount can solve a pattern mismatch, but an adapter is model-specific hardware, not a universal guarantee. Fellowes offers a 100×200 mm conversion mount. Its availability does not establish that it will fit every monitor recess, arm plate, screw length or load rating. Confirm all four interfaces: the monitor holes, adapter holes, arm plate, and supplied hardware. Include the adapter’s own weight in the suspended-load calculation if the manufacturer requires it.
Best Value
- Check Desk & Monitor Compatibility: To ensure a proper fit, your monitor must meet these 3 conditions at the same time: First, screen size ranges 13"–32". Second, monitor weight must be between 4.4–15.4 lbs. Third, supports VESA 75×75mm or 100×100mm. Meanwhile, we recommend mounting this arm only on wood desks 0.59"–3.54" thick (other desk types not recommended). Note: If your desk has irregular edges, please choose this monitor arm carefully.
- MechaSpring Arm — Built for 2× Longer Life: Featuring the MechaSpring arm, this VESA monitor mount delivers consistent support over time for dependable performance that lasts. Unlike gas-based designs that may lose pressure, this monitor desk mount helps keep your monitor steady through everyday adjustments, offering up to 2× the service life of conventional mounts. Moreover, with 90% professional-grade metal construction, the single monitor arm delivers strong reliability, day after day.
- LockSteady System — Adjust with Ease, Hold with Strength: With the upgraded system, the monitor mount helps resist screen droop and moves smoothly with just one finger if you adjust screens often. For set-and-forget setups or deep focus work—like designing, coding and data analysis—where the monitor stays in place most of the time, it holds steady right where you leave it for reliable viewing. This monitor stand is also TÜV Rheinland certified and tested at 3x its load for added safety.
- ACA-Endorsed Design for Ergonomic Comfort — Backed by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), the desk monitor mount helps reduce neck & back strain by raising your monitor to eye level and fine-tuning it. It transitions smoothly between focused coding, intense gaming and screen sharing during meetings, creating a more comfortable setup for both work and play. Not only does it transform your desk into a professional workstation, but it also supports your health as much as your productivity.
- PrecisionView Window — Tension Adjustment Made Visible: Stop guessing. Start seeing. Unlike a traditional monitor mount where tension is adjusted by feel alone, our integrated PrecisionView window provides instant visual feedback through the yellow indicator movement. You'll know exactly when the tension is perfectly calibrated for your monitor's weight — no more over-tightening or endless trial and error. This professional-grade precision puts you in full control from the first turn.
For recessed mounts, check whether the adapter sits against a structural surface rather than a cosmetic back cover. If the monitor manual prohibits spacers, an adapter or spacer stack may be unsafe even when the hole pattern appears correct.
Desk mounting constraints that can stop a good monitor match
Clamp installation
A clamp needs a continuous, strong edge and enough open space for its jaws. Measure desktop thickness where the clamp will sit, not at a thinner front edge. Cable trays, modesty panels and beveled edges can prevent the clamp from seating fully. Tighten evenly and use the supplied reinforcement plate when the instructions specify one.
Grommet installation
A grommet mount passes through a desk hole and usually provides a more central load path, but it requires access below the surface and a hole in the correct position. Check the hole diameter, underside clearance and desk material before drilling. MSI publishes separate clamp and grommet thickness limits for the MPG MT201RG; use those model-specific limits rather than assuming the two methods are interchangeable.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Counting the factory stand: remove it from the calculation; count only the load that remains suspended.
- Using the maximum alone: check the arm’s minimum rating and any weighted-plate requirement.
- Assuming all VESA mounts are equal: measure the exact spacing and verify the pattern listed for the arm.
- Trusting diagonal size: check weight, width, depth, orientation and reach.
- Ignoring curved-screen limits: use a separate curved rating when one is published.
- Forcing screws into a recess: confirm thread engagement and maximum insertion depth in the monitor manual.
- Skipping desk measurements: verify clamp or grommet thickness, underside access and edge clearance.
- Mixing adapter parts: use only an adapter whose monitor side, arm side and load rating are documented for the combination.
When a specification is missing
Do not infer compatibility from a photograph, a retailer’s generic “VESA ready” label or a maximum screen size alone. If the exact monitor weight, VESA pattern, screw depth or desk-thickness range is not stated, obtain the monitor and arm manuals or ask the manufacturer for the missing value. Until those measurements are confirmed, treat the combination as unverified rather than marginally compatible.
Bottom line: a five-part fit test
A monitor fits an arm only when all five checks pass: (1) the monitor-plus-accessories load is inside the arm’s minimum and maximum range; (2) the exact VESA hole pattern and screw hardware match; (3) screen width, height, depth and orientation stay within the arm’s movement and clearance limits; (4) curved-screen or other special ratings are respected; and (5) the chosen clamp or grommet installation suits the desk thickness and structure. Use the named product figures as model-specific examples, then verify the current manual for the exact monitor and arm before drilling or lifting the display.
