Neither momentum nor value investing is universally best. Momentum buys securities showing strong recent performance, while value seeks securities priced below a reasoned estimate of their fundamental worth. The better fit depends on which kind of underperformance you can tolerate, how much analysis and monitoring you will actually do, your trading and tax costs, and whether your portfolio is diversified beyond one style.

This is an educational framework, not individualized financial advice. Historical factor premiums can disappear, reverse or fail to survive costs. Your implementation—fund, rules-based portfolio or individual securities—matters as much as the label.

What is the difference between momentum and value investing?

The two styles use different sources of information to select investments:

Aspect Momentum investing Value investing
Primary signal Recent price or total-return strength relative to other securities or a benchmark Market price that appears low relative to earnings, book value, cash flow or a separately estimated intrinsic value
Core assumption Existing trends can persist for a period The market price will eventually move closer to fundamental worth
Typical process Systematic ranking, portfolio formation and scheduled rebalancing Financial-statement analysis, business assessment, valuation and a margin-of-safety decision
Main failure mode Sharp reversals after a trend changes or becomes crowded A “cheap” security is impaired, or remains cheap for many years
Common implementation burden Rules, data, turnover control and frequent monitoring Research, forecasts, thesis updates and patience

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describes momentum this way: “An investor using a momentum investing strategy seeks to capitalize on the continuance of existing trends in the market.” Read the SEC Investor Bulletin on behavioral patterns (June 16, 2014) for the regulator’s explanation.

Momentum is a return trend factor, not a synonym for every form of trend following. A quantitative strategy might rank stocks by 6-, 9- or 12-month returns, exclude the most recent month, and buy the relative winners. Another might use absolute trend rules against a moving average. Different universes, look-back periods, weighting methods and rebalance dates produce different risks.

Value investing compares price with fundamentals. Ratios such as book value-to-price or earnings-to-price are useful screens, but a ratio is not automatically a complete intrinsic-value estimate. A business can have a low multiple because its assets are obsolete, its profits are temporary or its balance sheet is fragile. The CFA Institute’s discussion of formulaic value investing (April 2017) warns that simple formulas may not capture the full valuation process.

Which investor behavior does each style require?

Momentum: following a rule when the story changes

A momentum process works only if you can follow its signals rather than replacing them with headlines or a personal forecast. A winning position may look expensive, and a recently falling security may look tempting, yet the rules can require holding the winner and avoiding the loser. When rankings change, selling can feel wrong even when the signal is behaving as designed.

Momentum can also turn quickly. An SEC-filed fund disclosure cautions: “Momentum can turn quickly, and stocks that previously have exhibited high momentum may not experience continued positive momentum.” Such securities may be more volatile than the broad market and can underperform other investment styles; see the SEC filing’s risk disclosures.

Value: testing whether “cheap” is justified

Value requires a different discipline. You need to decide what the company could be worth, identify the assumptions that drive that estimate, and ask what would invalidate the thesis. Low valuation can reflect a temporary setback, but it can also signal a permanently declining industry, excessive debt, fraud, dilution or poor capital allocation. A value position may underperform while the business remains fundamentally sound, so patience and a predefined review process are essential.

Valuations may never improve. The same SEC-filed disclosure notes that securities identified as value investments can remain out of favor or fail to reach the investor’s estimate of worth. A low price alone is not a margin of safety.

What does the historical evidence actually show?

Long historical studies support the idea that both signals have sometimes earned premiums, but they do not provide a forecast for your account. Results vary with the asset universe, signal definition, portfolio construction, market regime and costs.

Momentum’s long sample—and long droughts

A CFA Institute summary of Geczy and Samonov’s study covers a constructed momentum strategy over 1801–2012, a 212-year sample. It reports approximately 0.4% per month in average excess returns for that strategy. It also records seven separate ten-year periods of negative momentum returns since 1801. These are historical results for an academic strategy, not a retail-fund return, a net-of-cost result or a promised future premium. The summary is available in How Durable Is Momentum Investing? (September 1, 2016).

The analysis also finds that market state matters: momentum can become more exposed to market risk during extended market states and can suffer abrupt reversals. It discusses dynamic beta hedging in the studied design, but that finding does not amount to a simple recommendation to hedge a personal portfolio.

Value and momentum across asset classes

A 2013 CFA Institute digest summarizes evidence from eight asset classes, with samples ending in 2011: stocks in the United States, United Kingdom, continental Europe and Japan; global equity indices; currencies; government bonds; and commodity futures. It reports significant value and momentum premiums in the markets studied and higher Sharpe ratios for combined value-and-momentum portfolios than for either standalone approach in those samples. See Value and Momentum Everywhere for the scope and limitations.

A higher historical Sharpe ratio does not mean a combined portfolio will outperform in every later period. It also does not remove drawdowns, liquidity risk, currency risk or implementation costs.

Why a value label is not enough

The 2017 CFA Institute summary reports little compelling evidence that simple book-value or earnings-to-price formulas delivered superior performance for U.S. equities in the paper’s analysis. That result should not be read as “all value investing fails.” It means that a formulaic screen and a comprehensive fundamental valuation are materially different processes. Before comparing two products called “value,” inspect their definitions, sector constraints, profitability filters, rebalancing rules and treatment of distressed companies.

How can you decide which style fits your goals?

Use the following sequence before choosing a fund or building a portfolio. The goal is to match a repeatable process to your circumstances, not to predict the next market regime.

  1. Define the job of the money. Set the time horizon, required liquidity and acceptable loss before selecting a style. Money needed soon should not depend on a factor recovering on schedule.
  2. Write your tolerance for a specific kind of pain. Momentum can fall rapidly after a reversal. Value can lag for years while a cheap security stays cheap. Choose the drawdown pattern you can continue to hold through, not the one that looks best in a recent chart.
  3. Choose a process you can execute. Momentum needs a written signal, rebalance calendar, position limits and an exception policy. Value needs a valuation method, accounting checks, thesis milestones and rules for selling when the thesis breaks.
  4. Estimate friction before looking at historical returns. Include fund expenses, bid-ask spreads, commissions where applicable, turnover, taxes in your jurisdiction and the market impact of trades. Academic gross returns are not your net return.
  5. Check diversification. Review the actual holdings by company, sector, country, currency and asset class. A style can become concentrated in a narrow industry or in securities exposed to the same economic shock.
  6. Compare the vehicle, not its marketing name. Read the prospectus and current holdings. Identify the benchmark, signal definition, rebalance frequency, leverage or short exposure, fees, liquidity terms and principal risk disclosures.
  7. Set a review date and a sell rule. A scheduled review prevents you from abandoning a style after a bad month. A sell rule prevents a permanent loss from being rationalized as temporary underperformance.

When might momentum be a reasonable fit?

  • You prefer observable price rules to estimating a company’s intrinsic value.
  • You can monitor a portfolio on its stated schedule and accept that turnover may be meaningful.
  • You understand that a trend can reverse between rebalance dates and are prepared for rapid losses.
  • Your account and tax situation can absorb the strategy’s trading activity.
  • You will diversify across enough securities or asset groups that one reversal does not determine the outcome.

A rules-based fund can simplify implementation, but it does not eliminate signal risk. Ask whether the strategy uses relative momentum, absolute trend filters or both; how it handles missing prices and corporate actions; and whether it limits sector or country concentration.

When might value be a reasonable fit?

  • You are willing to study financial statements, business quality and industry structure.
  • You can hold an unpopular position while waiting for a catalyst or for fundamentals to improve.
  • You can distinguish a temporary problem from a structurally impaired business.
  • Your valuation estimate includes a range of outcomes rather than a single precise target.
  • You have a documented reason to sell when debt, earnings power, governance or competitive position deteriorates.

A diversified value portfolio may reduce the company-specific risk of individual bargains, but diversification cannot turn every low multiple into a sound investment. Profitability, balance-sheet strength and earnings durability can be important complements to a price-to-book or price-to-earnings screen.

Can you combine value and momentum?

Yes. Combining them can diversify the information sources in a portfolio: momentum responds to what prices are doing, while value responds to what prices appear to imply about fundamentals. The historical asset-class study summarized by the CFA Institute found higher Sharpe ratios for combined portfolios in its samples, but the finding is neither a guarantee nor a reason to ignore costs and concentration.

Three practical ways to combine them

  1. Allocate separate sleeves. Hold a defined percentage in a value strategy and another in a momentum strategy. Rebalance to targets on a schedule so the recent winner does not silently dominate.
  2. Use a blended ranking. Rank securities on both valuation and momentum, then select those that meet minimum standards on each. This reduces exposure to extremely expensive winners or falling “value traps,” but it can also exclude securities that would have driven a single-factor return.
  3. Combine at the fund level. Use diversified vehicles with clearly disclosed methodologies, then examine overlap. Two funds with different labels may own many of the same companies or sectors.

A combined portfolio still has market risk and may experience periods when both signals struggle. Decide in advance how you will rebalance and what level of overlap is acceptable.

How to evaluate a momentum or value fund

Document or metric Questions to answer
Strategy description What exact signal defines momentum or value? What look-back, valuation ratios, quality screens and exclusions are used?
Portfolio construction How many holdings are there? Are positions equal-weighted, capitalization-weighted or volatility-scaled? Are sector, country or issuer limits applied?
Rebalancing How often does the portfolio trade, and under what trigger? Is turnover a historical figure or a target?
Costs What are the expense ratio, spreads, commissions, securities-lending policy and any performance or transaction charges?
Risk disclosures Does the vehicle use leverage, derivatives, short positions, foreign currency or small-cap securities? What liquidity limits apply?
Performance presentation Are returns gross or net of fees? What benchmark and time periods are shown? Are drawdowns and periods of underperformance visible?

Do not compare a live fund’s net returns with a backtest that assumes frictionless trading. The CFA Institute’s 2026 overview of active equity strategies emphasizes that data quality, turnover assumptions, transaction costs, model specification and portfolio implementation can materially change an outcome. Read Active Equity Investing: Strategies for a framework covering these issues.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying after a fashionable run

A momentum screen can identify a security after much of its move has already occurred. Reduce this risk with position limits, a diversified universe and a predetermined rebalance rule rather than an emotional entry decision.

Calling a troubled company “value”

Low ratios can reflect falling demand, accounting problems or excessive leverage. Test the balance sheet, cash generation, competitive position and realistic recovery path before treating a low price as an opportunity.

Changing rules after a drawdown

Abandoning a strategy at its worst point converts a temporary underperformance period into a realized loss and removes the possibility of recovery. Document why the process should work, what evidence would falsify it and when you will review it.

Trusting an attractive backtest

Look-ahead bias, survivorship bias, data mining, overfitting, unrealistic turnover and unavailable short positions can make a historical simulation appear stronger than an investable result. Require an out-of-sample or live-history perspective where available and apply conservative cost assumptions.

Ignoring taxes and account type

Frequent turnover can create taxable gains in a taxable account; a long holding period can create different tax consequences. Tax rules vary by jurisdiction and account, so obtain qualified local advice before selecting a high-turnover implementation.

A decision checklist

  • Can I explain the signal in one paragraph and calculate when it changes?
  • How long could this style underperform without forcing me to sell?
  • What loss, volatility and turnover are acceptable for this account?
  • What are the all-in costs after spreads, fees and taxes relevant to me?
  • How concentrated are the actual holdings and factor exposures?
  • What would prove that my thesis or model no longer works?
  • Would a blended allocation better match my behavior than a single style?

Bottom line: choose the process you can sustain

Momentum invests in the persistence of price trends and demands rules, monitoring and acceptance of abrupt reversals. Value invests in a gap between price and fundamental worth and demands analysis, valuation discipline and patience through potentially long periods of disappointment. Historical studies—including a 212-year momentum sample and multi-asset value-and-momentum research—show why investors study these factors, not why any particular strategy must win next.

For many investors, the most defensible choice is a diversified, transparently implemented allocation that fits their time horizon, costs and ability to stay invested. Whether you choose one style or combine both, evaluate the exact rules and risks rather than relying on the label.
