A momentary push button returns to its resting position when released; a latching (also called maintained) push button stays in its actuated position until it is operated again. Either type can use normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) contacts—the mechanical action and the contact arrangement are separate choices.
What do momentary and latching mean?
Momentary: active only while pressed
A momentary button uses a spring-return action. Pressing it changes the contact state; releasing it lets the actuator return, and the contacts revert. This suits inputs that should exist only during an action, such as start, jog, reset or hold-to-run commands. Schneider Electric Australia describes the momentary and maintained actions; the same distinction appears in Rockwell Automation’s Sensor Technology and Application Basics Reference Manual (2017 edition).
Latching or maintained: state persists after release
A latching button retains its actuated position and contact state after you let go. Operating it again changes the state back. This can suit an on/off command or mode selection when the physical position should continue to indicate the selected state. “Latching” and “maintained” are commonly used for this retained action.

Normally open and normally closed describe the contact pair when the button is at rest—not whether the actuator is momentary or latching. Schneider Electric USA defines NO and NC contact states by whether contacts are open or closed when not actuated.
#1 Best Overall
- This momentary button switch is made of durable stainless steel and aluminum alloy structure, with IP66 waterproof rating and IK09 resistance to damage, suitable for harsh environments.
- Momentary push button switch rated for 2A 12/24VDC and 1A 250VAC, ensuring reliable performance.
- Pre-wired with 20cm cables for quick and hassle-free installation in automotive, marine, or appliance applications.
- Rugged design withstands 100,000 electrical cycles, offering long-lasting durability and consistent operation.
- Normally open contact type with 0-250V operating range, ideal for industrial and commercial control systems.
- NO: open at rest; closes when actuated.
- NC: closed at rest; opens when actuated.
Either contact arrangement can be used with either mechanical action. Do not infer contact type from the button’s action, color or appearance; check terminal markings and the diagram for the exact switch.
How do the two actions compare?
| Consideration | Momentary | Latching / maintained |
|---|---|---|
| Actuator after release | Spring returns it to rest | Remains actuated until operated again |
| How long the contact change lasts | While the button is held | Persists after release |
| Typical control role | Start, jog, reset or hold-to-run input | On/off command or mode selection |
| Contact arrangement at rest | May be NO or NC | May be NO or NC |
| Power-loss question | The complete circuit determines what happens when power returns | The button may remain latched while power is off; circuit design determines whether a command is restored when power returns |
How to choose a push button
- Match the action to the task. Choose momentary when the input should be present only while pressed; choose maintained when the selected physical state should persist after release.
- Choose NO or NC separately. Use the circuit requirements and the manufacturer’s contact diagram to decide which contact arrangement is needed.
- Check the exact model’s specifications. Compare the electrical rating for the intended load, contact count and type, mounting cut-out, actuator style, illumination and required environmental protection. Manufacturer product lines offer different combinations; TE Connectivity’s push-button switch information describes configuration and environmental options.
- Confirm component compatibility. Some industrial lines use interchangeable heads and contact blocks, but compatibility is model-specific. Verify the complete part combination and current documentation instead of relying on similar appearance. Schneider Electric’s FAQ gives Harmony parts as examples, not universal recommendations.
- Consider the whole circuit during a power interruption. A maintained actuator can stay latched while power is off. Whether power restoration re-energizes a command depends on the control-circuit design; a button by itself does not determine that behavior.
Important safety and wiring limits
A generic maintained push button is not automatically a safety-rated emergency-stop device. Emergency-stop selection and machine control design involve requirements beyond the distinction between momentary and latching action. The appropriate wiring also depends on the particular device, load, voltage, protective measures and local rules, so use the manufacturer’s documentation and qualified guidance for the application.
