ModRetro’s transparent Chromatic + Tetris bundle was listed for $149.99 USD on October 11, 2026. Notebookcheck reported that price is $50 less than the older, non-transparent Chromatic; ModRetro’s current listing confirms the bundle price but does not independently verify the earlier model’s price.
What is the transparent ModRetro Chromatic?
It is a transparent-shell version of ModRetro’s Chromatic handheld, sold as a bundle with a Tetris cartridge. The manufacturer describes the shell as transparent ABS plastic. Its site displayed Smoke, Purple, Green, and Red transparent color options when checked on October 11, 2026; color selection and stock may change.
The official product page listed the bundle at $149.99 USD on October 11, 2026. Notebookcheck’s October 9, 2026 report characterized it as $50 cheaper than the older, non-transparent Chromatic. That comparison is Notebookcheck’s reporting: the current ModRetro listing does not show the older model’s price, and neither price should be treated as permanent.

Does it play original Game Boy cartridges?
Yes, according to ModRetro. The company says Chromatic plays original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges on FPGA-based hardware. Its product page states: “Chromatic plays all your Game Boy® and Game Boy Color® cartridges on real hardware.” This is the manufacturer’s compatibility claim; no independent cartridge testing is established here.

What should buyers compare before choosing a retro handheld?
The Chromatic’s key distinction is its stated support for original physical Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. When comparing it with an older Chromatic or another retro handheld, check whether the device uses cartridges or emulation, what games and accessories are included, its display size and backlighting, battery options, multiplayer connection, and shell material. The $50 price comparison applies specifically to the older non-transparent Chromatic as reported by Notebookcheck, not to every competing handheld.
