Modified Cobblemon Plus is a Java Edition modpack built around Cobblemon. For the current documented baseline, use Minecraft 1.21.1, install the exact pack release in Modrinth App, Prism Launcher, or CurseForge Launcher, and keep the client and server on the same loader, mods, datapacks, resource files, and pack version. Bedrock Edition is not supported. Cobblemon itself has no official server, so playing with friends means either self-hosting or using managed Minecraft server hosting.

This guide explains what the pack contains, how to install it, how to create a compatible server, and how to tune performance without blindly changing settings that can break farms or technical builds.

What Modified Cobblemon Plus is

Modified Cobblemon Plus is a community-maintained pack from ModifiedMC that expands the Cobblemon creature-collecting experience with progression, quests, automation, economy, recipes, and server utilities. It is versioned independently from the base Cobblemon mod, so the pack’s changelog is the authority for each release. A tutorial written for one pack version can become incorrect after a loader, configuration, or dependency change.

The v11 changelog describes a substantial quest and content system, a PokéDollars in-game currency, Create-based automation additions, changes to Cobblemon progression, EMI for recipe lookup, Spark for performance monitoring, and other utility mods. Those features are release-specific rather than a permanent promise that every future build will contain exactly the same files.

NeoForge dependencies Recommended NeoForge version and Kotlin for Forge A missing or mismatched Kotlin dependency can stop startup.
Performance recommendation Cobblemon’s official page recommends Fabric for better performance Use Fabric when the Modified Cobblemon Plus release offers a supported Fabric build and you have no pack-specific reason to use NeoForge.
Official Cobblemon server None You must operate your own server or choose a third-party provider.

The official Cobblemon page states, “Cobblemon does NOT have an official server.” That means a public server listing, a community server, and a private server you rent or run yourself are separate projects, not official Cobblemon infrastructure.

Confirm the release before downloading anything

Start with the ModifiedMC changelog for the release you intend to use. Record the pack version, Minecraft version, loader, and any notes about migrations. This single check prevents the most common installation mistake: building a server around a different release from the clients.

  1. Open the release notes for the target pack version. Check whether it is a v11 build, a later build, or an older instance that your friends already use.
  2. Write down the loader metadata. For v11.2.0, the changelog records NeoForge 21.1.133. Treat that value as specific to that release.
  3. Check the included files. Note whether the distribution supplies a server pack, separate datapacks, resource packs, configuration files, or scripts.
  4. Agree on one version with every player. Do not let each person update independently; a single changed mod can cause a handshake failure or subtle world differences.

Install the client

Modrinth App

  1. Install or open Modrinth App and sign in if the application requests it.
  2. Use the app’s modpack search to locate the exact Modified Cobblemon Plus release. Verify the displayed Minecraft version and loader before installing.
  3. Choose an installation directory with enough free storage for the instance and its world saves.
  4. Launch the new instance once. Let Minecraft create its folders and complete the first setup, then exit normally.

Modrinth App is the launcher recommended by Cobblemon’s official page for modpacks. It is useful when you want dependency selection and updates handled from one instance rather than copying individual mods.

Prism Launcher

  1. Open Prism Launcher and create a new instance from its modpack import or browsing function.
  2. Select the same Modified Cobblemon Plus version recorded from the changelog.
  3. Inspect the instance’s Minecraft and loader fields before launching. A correct-looking mod list with the wrong loader is still incompatible.
  4. Launch once, wait for the title screen, and close the game cleanly so configuration files are written.

Prism Launcher is the practical alternative when you want separate instances, explicit version control, or easier testing of a second pack release without overwriting the first one.

CurseForge Launcher

  1. Open CurseForge Launcher and search for the pack’s exact project and release.
  2. Confirm that the profile’s Minecraft version and loader match the release notes.
  3. Install the profile, launch it once, and close it before editing files.
  4. Keep the profile isolated from unrelated mod folders. Copying extra mods into a managed profile can create duplicate libraries or incompatible dependencies.

First-launch verification

After the first successful launch, inspect the main menu and the instance log for the expected loader and Cobblemon build. Enter a temporary single-player world and check that Cobblemon content, the quest interface, EMI recipes, and the pack’s other documented systems appear. This test separates a broken client installation from a later server-connection problem.

Choose a server model

Approach Advantages Responsibilities and trade-offs
Self-hosting Lowest recurring cost and complete control over files, permissions, backups, and updates. You provide a computer that stays online, network access, port forwarding or an equivalent tunnel, firewall rules, backups, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
Managed Minecraft server hosting Provider handles the public endpoint, machine availability, and much of the panel-based administration. Recurring fees, provider-specific limits, possible restrictions on custom loaders or files, and dependence on the provider’s geography and support.

The Modified Cobblemon Plus changelog includes a “Need a Server?” link to Bloom, while Cobblemon’s official page points readers toward public listings or buying a server from hosts such as BisectHosting. Those references do not establish a universal price, hardware tier, region, or uptime guarantee; verify the provider’s current offering before paying.

Self-host a Modified Cobblemon Plus server

No official universal RAM or CPU minimum has been published for this pack. The correct capacity depends on view distance, loaded chunks, entity counts, Create contraptions, number of players, and how many farms are active at once. Start with the provider or machine’s available resources, observe actual tick performance, and scale from evidence rather than a claimed minimum.

  1. Obtain the matching server distribution. Use the server pack or server files supplied for the same Modified Cobblemon Plus release as the clients. Do not assemble a server by downloading a random Cobblemon jar and hoping the pack will fill in the rest.
  2. Create a clean server directory. Keep it separate from the client instance. Copy the supplied mods, configuration, datapacks, resource files, scripts, and libraries exactly as documented.
  3. Install the required Java runtime. Use the Java version specified by the pack or loader documentation. A Java version mismatch can fail before the first mod loads.
  4. Start the server once. Run the supplied launcher script, or use the server command documented by the distribution. If you need a generic command, place the real jar name inside java -jar <server-jar> nogui; do not rename files casually when a script expects a particular name.
  5. Accept the EULA only if you agree to it. Stop the process, edit the generated EULA file as required by Minecraft’s terms, and start again.
  6. Allow the world to generate. Wait for the server to reach its ready state before connecting. Stop it with the console’s normal stop command so region files and configuration changes are flushed.
  7. Configure networking. Permit the server port through the host firewall and router, or use the provider’s documented networking method. Test from a different network instead of assuming that a local connection proves public access.
  8. Connect with a test client. Use an account running the identical pack release, loader, mods, datapacks, and resource files. Create a temporary test world or travel a short distance before inviting everyone.

Set up a managed server

Choose a plan that permits custom modpacks and the loader used by your release. A generic “modded Minecraft” label is not enough: the panel must let you upload or select the correct server distribution, change configuration files, and restart safely.

  1. Confirm the provider supports the pack’s Minecraft version and loader, including NeoForge 21.1.133 when using Modified Cobblemon Plus v11.2.0.
  2. Create a new instance and select the provider’s custom modpack, custom jar, or file-upload workflow.
  3. Upload the supplied server files rather than only the client’s mods folder. Server-side configuration, datapacks, and scripts can be essential.
  4. Start once, allow world and configuration files to generate, then stop before making edits.
  5. Set the server address and access controls in the provider panel. Use a whitelist while testing and share the address only with intended players.
  6. Take a provider snapshot or download a backup before every pack update.

If the panel cannot run the required loader or prevents access to the files the pack needs, choose another provider or self-host instead of trying to remove dependencies until the server starts.

Keep every installation synchronized

Most connection failures are version drift. Treat the client and server as one release bundle.

  • Use the same Minecraft version on both sides.
  • Use the same loader family and loader build.
  • Match every mod version, including libraries that do not add visible features.
  • Copy matching configuration files when the server distribution supplies them.
  • Keep datapacks and resource files aligned; a resource pack mismatch may not block login but can make the game appear broken.
  • Do not add client-only visual or performance mods to the server unless their documentation explicitly supports server installation.
  • When updating, update the server first on a backup copy, then distribute the same client profile to players.

Reduce lag with ServerCore and observation

Modified Cobblemon Plus includes ServerCore configuration controls. The repository configuration states that autosave is 300 seconds when save-on is active and exposes mob-cap and spawn-interval settings. It also provides the commands /servercore status and /mobcaps. These are measurement and control points, not proof that the documented defaults are optimal for every world.

Establish a baseline

  1. Start the server with the pack’s default configuration.
  2. When players are online and normal activity is occurring, run /servercore status and record the reported state.
  3. Run /mobcaps in the areas where players notice slowdowns. Record entity categories and counts rather than guessing that Cobblemon alone is responsible.
  4. Note the situation: number of players, loaded bases, active Create machines, farms, dimensions, and approximate time of day.

Activation ranges

ServerCore’s activation-range feature reduces the distance at which entities receive full ticking attention. The documented default is 16 blocks, with separate custom ranges available for categories including raiders, water animals, villagers, zombies, creepers, and other monsters.

Lowering a range can reduce entity-ticking cost, but it can also change gameplay. Mob farms may stop working as designed, villagers may behave differently, and technical contraptions that depend on an entity staying active can fail. Change one category at a time, test the affected farm or build, and keep a written record of the original value.

Autosave and spawn controls

The 300-second autosave value is a configuration default documented in the included repository file, not a universal recommendation. Saving less frequently can reduce periodic pauses in some situations but increases the amount of progress at risk if the process or machine fails. Spawn intervals and mob caps likewise trade simulation load against the availability of creatures and hostile mobs. Adjust them only after checking /mobcaps and confirming that the symptom is actually entity pressure.

A safe tuning loop

  1. Change one setting, category, or range.
  2. Restart if the configuration requires it, then reproduce the same activity that showed lag.
  3. Compare tick behavior, player movement, creature spawning, farms, and Create machines with the baseline.
  4. Keep the change only if it improves the target symptom without breaking required gameplay.
  5. Revert immediately when a farm, quest, contraption, or creature behavior becomes unreliable.

Do not promise a fixed frames-per-second or player-count improvement from these controls. The pack has no published universal hardware benchmark, and the result depends on the world and workload.

Diagnose common failures

The launcher says the pack cannot load

Recheck the Minecraft version, loader, and pack release shown in the launcher. If you installed a v11.2.0 profile, verify that NeoForge 21.1.133 is present where the release requires it. Remove manually added mods and retry with a clean profile. On NeoForge, confirm that the required Kotlin for Forge dependency is installed at the version selected by the pack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A client cannot join the server

Compare the client and server mod lists and configuration files, not just their visible pack names. A server updated while one player kept an older profile can reject the connection. Check that the player is using Java Edition, the same loader family, and the same datapacks and resource files. If the server is private, verify whitelist and firewall settings after compatibility has been established.

The server starts but the world behaves strangely

Restore the last known-good configuration and test again. Activation ranges, mob caps, spawn intervals, and datapacks can alter farms and technical systems without producing a startup crash. Change one file at a time and test in a copy of the world before applying the change to the live instance.

Performance drops during busy periods

Use /servercore status and /mobcaps while the slowdown is happening. Record whether the issue follows a particular base, dimension, farm, or Create installation. Reduce unnecessary loaded areas, pause intensive contraptions, and then evaluate one ServerCore setting. Avoid simultaneously changing view distance, simulation distance, mob caps, activation ranges, and spawn intervals because you will not know which change helped or caused a new problem.

The server stops after an update

Restore the backup and read the release-specific changelog for migration instructions. Do not copy a new mod jar into an old world without checking loader and configuration changes. Keep the previous server directory intact until the new release has been tested with a duplicate world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backups, updates, and support

Back up the world, configuration directory, server properties, datapacks, and any custom scripts. A world-only backup may not restore the exact gameplay rules that players expect. Keep at least one offline or provider-independent copy, and label it with the pack version and date.

For an update, stop the server cleanly, make a full backup, duplicate the instance for testing, apply the new pack files, and launch the duplicate first. Test login, quests, Cobblemon progression, recipes, currency, Create machines, and important farms. Only then schedule the live update and require players to install the matching client release.

The ModifiedMC changelog records Discord support, an in-game server browser, and a GitHub issue tracker. Use those channels for pack-specific bugs, and include the pack version, loader, Minecraft version, logs, reproduction steps, and whether the issue occurs in a clean instance. This information is more useful than reporting only that “the modpack is broken.”
