The “Modern Warfare unable to access online services” message does not identify a single cause. Check Activision’s service status first, then your gaming platform’s network status, and only then troubleshoot your local connection. If an outage is confirmed, wait for service updates; if services appear online, work through the connection checks below.
What the “unable to access online services” error means
The message—and a related “connection failed” notice—does not by itself show whether the problem is with Activision’s services, the network for your console or PC platform, or your own internet connection. The status pages and connection guidance can help narrow it down, but they do not diagnose an individual player’s failure. Check the status when the error occurs because service conditions can change.
Check Activision’s Modern Warfare service status
-
Select the relevant game and refresh the page. Review the displayed status and any recent or known outage information or Activision updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
If Activision reports an outage, wait for updates and try again after service is restored. Repeatedly changing your home network settings is unlikely to resolve a confirmed service-side incident.

The status is live, so a report about an outage at another time may not reflect what is happening when you encounter the error.
Check your platform’s network status
If Activision’s services appear online, check the network for the platform you use. Activision’s status page links to relevant platform network resources, including Xbox, PlayStation Network, Battle.net, Steam, and Epic Games. Choose the one that applies to your setup and look for a reported incident or service disruption.

Restart your router. Power-cycle it using its normal restart procedure, then reconnect and try the game again.
-
Try a wired connection. Activision recommends, “Try using a wired connection.” If your device and router have compatible Ethernet ports, connect them with an Ethernet cable and test again. This can help determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the trouble, but a cable will not fix an upstream service outage.
