To reduce network lag in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, first check whether Activision or your platform reports an outage. If services are online, test your connection, try Ethernet, and pause heavy network use on other devices. These steps can improve reliability or ease local congestion, but they cannot guarantee lower ping: latency also depends on your internet provider’s route and your distance from the game server.
Identify the kind of lag you’re experiencing
“Lag” can describe several different online problems. Activision’s Modern Warfare lag guidance includes rubber-banding, when your character moves and then snaps back; stuttering, when movement freezes or skips; delayed hit markers; and being removed from a match or matchmaking lobby.
Ping, also called latency, is the time data takes to travel between locations and is measured in milliseconds. It is not the same as bandwidth, which describes how much data can be transferred over time, commonly measured in Mbps. A connection can have plenty of bandwidth yet still have high latency because of distance or routing. Conversely, other people’s streaming or uploads can consume available bandwidth and make a shared connection less reliable.
Work through these checks in order

Check Activision and platform status
Check the Activision Online Services page for Modern Warfare, then check the status of the platform you play on. If a service incident is reported, changing your home router settings is unlikely to address the cause.

Run your console’s connection test
Activision’s connection guidance describes network tests for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; Xbox multiplayer testing can help identify issues associated with lag or disconnections. Menu labels can change, so use the current network or connection-test options in your console settings rather than relying on an old menu path.

Try a wired Ethernet connection
If your console or PC and router support it, connect them with an Ethernet cable and test another match. Activision recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi reliability and available bandwidth can vary. Choose a cable long enough to reach safely between the device and router; this is a reliability test, not a promise of a particular ping reduction.

Pause competing network use
While diagnosing the problem, pause nonessential large downloads, video or music streaming, and gameplay streaming uploads on your network. Ask other users to pause heavy use briefly if practical. If symptoms ease, congestion may be contributing; it does not establish that congestion is the only cause.

Consider your router’s QoS controls
If your router supports Quality of Service (QoS), its controls may let you prioritize a device or type of traffic. The names and options differ by router, so consult its current documentation and make one reversible change at a time. QoS can help manage competition on a busy home network; it cannot fix an outage or a poor route beyond your home.

Inspect advanced router settings only if problems persist
Activision’s connection guidance discusses Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), then port forwarding with a static console IP, and finally DMZ for consoles. These are configuration changes, not general ping-lowering switches. Follow current instructions for your platform and router, and do not change settings you do not understand. Activision’s guidance says to remove a static IP from DMZ after testing. The support index lists a ports article updated 2026-02-03, but exact port values are not needed for this general troubleshooting sequence.

Contact your ISP about recurring route or packet-loss problems
If the issue keeps returning after local checks, ask your internet provider to investigate the connection and routing. Activision notes that fewer exchange points and more direct routes can reduce latency and potential packet loss, but consumers do not directly control internet routing. If your provider cannot offer a suitable route in your area, compare the connectivity options available locally.

What local fixes can—and cannot—change

Why ping may stay high after troubleshooting
Activision says latency depends substantially on ISP quality, the scope of the network, and geographic distance from servers. Matchmaking attempts to find nearby players, but that does not ensure a low-ping match when nearby players are scarce or the ISP route is poor. The local steps above can reduce instability or congestion without changing those factors.

Activision’s guidance explains that users cannot anticipate or prevent loss once data has been sent, though tightening the connection can reduce the potential for loss. Connection symptoms by themselves do not reveal whether the cause is home Wi-Fi, the ISP, the platform, or the game service; check status and test the connection before buying hardware.
