There is no confirmed universal fix for Modern Warfare’s “DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error.” Start with the official checks—system requirements, ventilation, background apps, graphics drivers, and game-file repair—then use the exact error code and crash timing to narrow the cause. Don’t assume this error is the same as Dev Error 6068 or that a launch flag will fix it.
First, identify the crash you are troubleshooting
“DirectX unrecoverable error” alone is not enough to diagnose a specific cause. Before changing settings, record the exact message and any code shown, the Modern Warfare version, Windows version, GPU model and driver version, launcher, and when the crash occurs.
- At startup: note whether the game closes immediately or fails while shaders are loading.
- During shader compilation: wait for preloading to finish before entering a mode. Activision’s 2019 PC troubleshooting guide says shader preloading is important during first boot.
- During a match: note the mode and whether the crash recurs under similar circumstances.
Do not treat “Dev Error 6068” as interchangeable with the DirectX message; check the actual error screen. The available reports do not establish that they share one cause.
Work through the official checks
1. Check requirements and ventilation
Activision’s March 5, 2024 crash guidance recommends checking that the PC meets the game’s minimum requirements and is in a cool, well-ventilated place. The Steam listing specifies DirectX 12 and, at minimum, 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB RAM, listed NVIDIA or AMD graphics hardware, and 175 GB storage: Steam’s Modern Warfare listing. Meeting those listed requirements does not guarantee the game will run without crashing, and a mismatch does not by itself prove why this error occurred.

2. Close apps that can interfere
Exit background applications, with particular attention to overlays, recording software, and input-remapping tools. Activision notes these can interfere with gameplay or the boot process even when they are not visibly running at launch. Its PC troubleshooting guide, published October 27, 2019, also names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as programs to disable if they conflict with the game. These are published troubleshooting suggestions, not proof that any one program is responsible for your crash.
3. Update the graphics driver
Install an appropriate current driver for your graphics card, following the GPU vendor’s instructions and Activision’s recommended-version guidance in its crash troubleshooting article. Record the driver version before and after updating; that detail can help if you need to contact support.

4. Repair or verify the game files in your launcher
Activision’s 2019 guide describes different checks for the two launchers it covers:

- Steam: verify the game files’ integrity. The guide also advises disabling programs that interfere with Steam.
Launcher labels and interfaces can change, and the guide predates current launcher builds. Use the repair or verification option available for your installed version rather than assuming every screen matches the older instructions.

5. Let shader preloading finish
If the game is compiling shaders, allow the process to complete before starting a mode. Activision’s guide warns that entering a game mode before shader preloading finishes may affect performance. This advice is relevant to that startup situation; it is not a demonstrated fix for every DirectX crash.
Use the error code and symptoms to choose the next step

Be cautious with launch flags and other unofficial fixes
A Steam Community post dated March 22, 2026, recommends a -d3d11 launch flag among other steps for a particular Windows 11/newer Nvidia GPU startup scenario. It is user-generated, and commenters report mixed experiences. Treat it only as an anecdotal lead if your OS, GPU, game version, launcher, and startup symptoms match—not as Activision-endorsed or as a reliable fix for every DirectX unrecoverable error: Steam Community post, “Possible fix for not launching”.
Before trying any code-specific workaround, confirm it applies to your exact error and game setup. Avoid registry edits or disabling security features without a separate diagnosis; the official guidance cited here does not recommend those as general fixes.

Contact Activision Support with the exact error text and code, game version, Windows build, GPU and driver version, launcher, crash timing, and the troubleshooting steps already tried. Activision’s known-issues page, updated June 21, 2024, describes a running list of reported or identified issues under investigation or scheduled for fixes; the issue visible on the consulted page concerns a PlayStation 5 installation-suspended problem, not this PC DirectX crash. That omission does not show whether the error has been reported or is being handled elsewhere: Activision’s Modern Warfare known-issues page.
