Activision is presenting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as the ending of the current Modern Warfare storyline and the starting point for a broader new direction in Call of Duty. That does not prove the Modern Warfare name is gone forever. What Activision means by “closing this chapter”
The wording describes a story transition rather than a confirmed permanent retirement of the Modern Warfare brand. Activision’s official intel messaging calls the game “A New Chapter of Modern Warfare,” while its broader positioning treats the current arc as reaching its conclusion. The safest reading is that Modern Warfare 4 resolves the present storyline and gives the wider series room to move in a different direction.

Xbox Wire described the sequel as pushing Call of Duty “into darker and more dangerous territory, where consequence and escalation bring long-running storylines to a powerful and emotional breaking point.” Windows Central has characterized the marketing as an “epic conclusion” and said the series is “definitely” ready for something new. That secondary description should not be treated as an official statement that no future Modern Warfare game can ever be made.
Release date and announced platforms

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are not in the announced platform list. That means owners of those older consoles should not assume a version exists unless Activision adds one later. Who is making it
Infinity Ward leads development. Activision Central Design and Technology, Beenox, Demonware, High Moon Studios, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games and Treyarch are providing support. The multi-studio structure reflects the scale of a release that combines a cinematic campaign, competitive multiplayer and an extraction mode.

Multiplayer launches with 12 new 6v6 maps
Day-one multiplayer includes 12 new maps for the traditional 6v6 format. Activision is describing the combat direction as grounded and precise, pointing toward deliberate gunplay rather than an overtly fantastical presentation. The announcement does not provide individual map names, sizes, modes beyond the 6v6 map count, or platform-specific performance targets.
For players choosing the game primarily for competitive matches, the important launch fact is the size of the initial map offering: all 12 maps are described as new and are scheduled for the day-one multiplayer package. Additional post-launch content, playlists and seasonal plans have not been established in the confirmed material.
