For a strong Modern Warfare 4 starting profile, use Tactical button layout, Default stick layout, 1.65 horizontal and vertical sensitivity, a 0.95–1.00 ADS sensitivity multiplier, Dynamic aim-response curve, Instant ADS transition, Target Aim Assist and ADS Aim Assist enabled, Motion Sensor off, stick minimum deadzones of 3, left-stick maximum 65, right-stick maximum 99, trigger deadzones between 0 and 5, Controller Vibration off, and Tactical Sprint Assist on. These are recommendations from SCUF’s September 21, 2026 beta/pre-launch guide—not confirmed final Activision defaults—so test them and check launch patch notes.

The right settings depend on drift, thumb control, display response and whether you prioritize precise aiming or rapid movement. The sections below explain what each value does, how to tune it without guessing, and which compromises matter in Modern Warfare 4’s changing sightlines and routes.

Recommended Modern Warfare 4 controller profile

Enter the following values as a baseline, then change one control at a time. Keeping a written note or screenshot of each revision makes it possible to return to a known-good setup.

Setting Starting value What it changes
Button layout Tactical Moves key movement actions to easier-to-reach buttons so you can slide or jump while keeping your right thumb on the aim stick.
Stick layout Default Uses the game’s standard left-stick movement and right-stick camera arrangement.
Horizontal sensitivity 1.65 Controls left-right camera speed.
Vertical sensitivity 1.65 Controls up-down camera speed.
ADS sensitivity multiplier 0.95–1.00 Reduces or preserves your look speed while aiming down sights.
Aim-response curve Dynamic Changes how stick movement is translated into camera acceleration across small and large inputs.
ADS transition Instant Applies ADS sensitivity as soon as you press the aim button rather than blending over a transition.
Target Aim Assist On Enables the game’s target-assist behavior.
ADS Aim Assist On Enables assistance while aiming down sights.
Motion Sensor Off Prevents controller motion from adding a second aiming input.
Left Stick Min 3 Ignores the first portion of movement to suppress unintended input.
Left Stick Max 65 Defines how far the movement stick must travel to reach maximum input.
Right Stick Min 3 Sets the initial right-stick movement threshold.
Right Stick Max 99 Uses nearly the full physical range for camera control.
Trigger deadzones 0–5 Determines how far a trigger must move before firing or aiming registers.
Controller Vibration Off Removes rumble that can mask small aiming corrections.
Tactical Sprint Assist On Reduces the amount of manual input needed to initiate tactical sprint.

SCUF published these figures on September 21, 2026 while the game was in beta/pre-launch. Activision’s reviewed material does not publish numerical deadzone, vibration or layout defaults, so treat this table as a tested starting recommendation rather than a mandatory configuration.

How stick deadzones work

A deadzone is the amount of physical stick travel the game ignores. The minimum deadzone is the threshold before movement begins; the maximum deadzone determines how much travel is needed to produce full input. A lower minimum feels immediate but exposes drift. A higher minimum hides drift but creates a delay before a small correction registers. A lower maximum reaches full speed earlier, while a value near the physical limit gives you more usable fine-control range.

Set the minimum deadzones

  1. Set Left Stick Min and Right Stick Min to 3.
  2. Leave each stick untouched in a quiet menu or training area. If the character walks or the camera moves without input, the affected stick is drifting.
  3. Raise only that stick’s minimum in small increments, such as one point at a time, until the movement stops.
  4. Move the stick slowly in every direction. If tiny deliberate inputs no longer register, reduce the minimum by one point and test again.

Do not raise both minimums automatically when only one stick drifts. Drift varies with wear, temperature and controller tolerances, so there is no universal “best” number. A controller that is stable at 3 should remain at 3; adding extra deadzone only sacrifices responsiveness.

Choose maximum values

The baseline uses 65 for the left stick and 99 for the right. The lower left-stick maximum makes full movement available before the stick reaches its outer shell, which can help sprint and strafe inputs feel consistent. The right-stick value of 99 preserves almost the entire aiming range for gradual tracking.

If your aim reaches maximum rotation too quickly, reduce the right maximum slightly. If a full push never produces the expected turn speed, increase it. Make changes in small steps and retest both slow tracking and a rapid 180-degree turn; a setting that helps one test can hurt the other.

Set trigger deadzones

Start each trigger between 0 and 5. Zero gives the earliest possible fire or aim activation, useful when you want immediate shots. Increase the value when a trigger activates from a light resting touch, a tight case, or a worn mechanism. Raise only the affected trigger and confirm that a normal press still activates reliably.

Sensitivity, ADS control and response curves

The 1.65 horizontal and vertical values provide a balanced starting speed for turning and vertical recoil control. Keeping the axes equal makes diagonal movement predictable. If you consistently over-correct vertical recoil while horizontal tracking feels comfortable, lower only vertical sensitivity; if turning between targets is too slow, raise horizontal sensitivity instead.

ADS multiplier: 0.95 versus 1.00

At 1.00, aiming-down-sights movement retains the full look speed. At 0.95, ADS is slightly slower, giving more time for micro-adjustments on distant targets. Choose 0.95 if you regularly pass over a target while tracking; choose 1.00 if entering ADS makes you feel trapped or unable to follow a strafing opponent. Test both with the same weapon and field of view so the comparison is meaningful.

Dynamic aim-response curve

Dynamic changes the relationship between stick displacement and camera speed across the stick’s range. Small movements can remain controlled while larger movements accelerate more quickly. This is useful when one profile must handle both precise head-level tracking and rapid turns, but it can feel unfamiliar if you are accustomed to a strictly linear response. Spend several minutes tracing slow horizontal lines before judging it; the goal is repeatable movement, not the fastest first impression.

Instant ADS transition

Instant applies the ADS behavior immediately when the aim button is pressed. That removes a transitional phase from the timing of a shot and makes muscle memory easier to build. If the visual snap feels abrupt, keep the setting while lowering the ADS multiplier rather than changing several variables at once.

Button layouts and movement access

Why Tactical is the baseline

Tactical relocates movement actions so actions such as sliding or crouching can be reached without repeatedly lifting the right thumb from the aim stick. That matters during gunfights in which you must change stance while maintaining target tracking. Tactical Sprint Assist, Single Tap Sprint and Instant ADS complement the same goal by reducing repeated stick or button actions.

When Default may be better

Default remains a valid choice if Tactical causes accidental crouches, you have years of Default muscle memory, or your controller’s button shape makes the alternate placement uncomfortable. Compare layouts by performing the same sequence: sprint, slide, jump, aim and fire while keeping the camera on a fixed point. The better layout is the one that preserves aim during movement without causing mis-presses.

Players using paddles or rear buttons should map only actions they can press consistently. Extra inputs are not automatically an advantage; an accidental rear-button press during a close fight is worse than a slower but deliberate movement command.

Vibration and motion sensor choices

Why turn vibration off

The baseline turns Controller Vibration off because rumble can obscure the tiny physical corrections used for recoil control and target tracking. It also removes a variable when comparing two sensitivity profiles. The trade-off is losing tactile confirmation of impacts, explosions or incoming events. If vibration helps your timing or awareness, turn it on and reduce other distractions rather than treating off as a requirement; Activision has not stated that either choice is mandatory.

Why Motion Sensor is off

Motion Sensor off keeps the right stick as the only camera input. This avoids accidental movement when you reposition the controller and makes a stick-only profile easier to reproduce across sessions. Turn it on only if you intentionally use tilt aiming and are prepared to calibrate it separately; combining an uncalibrated sensor with a new stick curve makes it difficult to identify the source of an over-correction.

Tune the profile for your play style

For precise, long-range tracking

  • Keep the right-stick minimum as low as your hardware allows without drift.
  • Use the 0.95 ADS multiplier and Dynamic curve.
  • Keep vibration off while learning recoil patterns.
  • Change only one sensitivity value after a complete accuracy test.

For aggressive close-range movement

  • Keep Tactical layout and Tactical Sprint Assist enabled.
  • Test 1.65 first, then raise horizontal sensitivity if you cannot turn through a flanking push.
  • Use 1.00 ADS if 0.95 makes it difficult to follow fast strafes.
  • Verify that a higher turn speed does not cause repeated overshooting.

For an older or drifting controller

  • Find the minimum value that stops drift instead of copying another player’s number.
  • Keep trigger deadzones within 0–5 unless a trigger activates unintentionally.
  • Check for physical obstruction, a loose cable or wireless interference before changing aim settings.
  • If the required deadzone becomes so large that fine movement disappears, repair or replace the hardware rather than masking the problem indefinitely.

Use Kill Block, the adaptive live-fire training environment built from three modular sections, for repeatable checks. Activision says it supports more than 500 configurations at launch, with routes changing between matches and during Gunfight rounds; launch formats include 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight. The changing sightlines make it useful for testing whether your movement and micro-aim remain consistent when cover and angles shift.

  1. Begin with the baseline profile and record the values.
  2. Run a slow tracking drill on a distant target, then a close-range target-switch drill.
  3. Perform repeated sprint-slide-jump sequences while keeping the crosshair at head height.
  4. Check for unintended movement with both sticks and triggers untouched.
  5. Change one value, repeat the same drills and keep the change only if the result is measurably more consistent.
  6. Play several normal matches before making another adjustment; a setting that feels unusual for five minutes may become stable with practice.

Troubleshooting common problems

The camera moves by itself

Raise Right Stick Min one point at a time until the movement stops, then retest slow tracking. If the required value keeps increasing, inspect the stick for debris or mechanical wear.

The character walks without touching the stick

Raise Left Stick Min gradually. Check whether Tactical Sprint Assist or another movement command is being activated by a faulty button before blaming the stick deadzone.

Aim feels slow after changing layouts

Confirm that the ADS multiplier did not change and that you are comparing the same response curve. Layout changes alter hand posture, so give the new arrangement a consistent practice session before increasing sensitivity.

Triggers fire or aim accidentally

Increase the affected trigger’s deadzone within the 0–5 starting range. If unintended activation continues at the upper end, the trigger mechanism may need service.

Rumble makes recoil control inconsistent

Turn Controller Vibration off for a controlled test. If accuracy improves, keep it off; if you rely on tactile cues, enable it again and compensate through practice rather than changing sensitivity at the same time.

What is confirmed at launch—and what is not

Activision’s May 28, 2026 announcement and official game page establish the October 23 release date, supported platforms, Infinity Ward as the studio, the 12 day-one 6v6 maps and the broader vehicle-and-infantry maps. They do not establish numerical deadzones, vibration defaults or a required button layout.

The SCUF profile is therefore best understood as a beta/pre-launch recommendation. Final launch patches can alter labels, ranges or behavior. After release, review the official patch notes and recheck every value, particularly deadzone handling and aim-assist behavior, before treating this profile as definitive.

Final setup decision

Start with Tactical, Default sticks, 1.65 sensitivity, 0.95–1.00 ADS, Dynamic, Instant ADS, aim assists on, Motion Sensor and vibration off, and the listed deadzone values. Keep each number only when it passes three tests: no unwanted input, controlled micro-aim and reliable movement under pressure. Hardware condition matters more than copying a preset, and a launch update may require retuning.
