Modern Warfare 4 does not currently have a documented co-op Campaign. Activision’s 2026 overview treats Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ as separate modes, and describes DMZ—not the story campaign—as playable solo or with a squad. If you want a shared narrative, Black Ops 7 is the direct same-franchise alternative: its Campaign supports up to four players and includes a replayable Endgame. For a survival horde mode, Black Ops 7’s round-based Zombies and Dead Ops Arcade 4 are the better fit. Within MW4, DMZ provides squad-based extraction and Multiplayer supplies competitive team play.
Does Modern Warfare 4 have campaign co-op?
Not according to the current official information. Activision’s MW4 overview lists Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ as distinct modes. It specifically says DMZ can be played solo or with a squad, but it does not document cooperative Campaign missions.
That distinction matters. A squad-enabled sandbox is not the same thing as inviting friends into the linear story. Unless Activision adds a co-op feature in a later announcement, you should plan to play the MW4 Campaign alone and use DMZ or Multiplayer for group sessions.
MW4 is scheduled to launch worldwide on October 23, 2026, according to Activision Support. The information available before launch can change, so check the final mode list and any post-launch announcements if you are buying specifically for story co-op.

What you can play with friends in Modern Warfare 4
DMZ: the closest MW4 substitute for co-op play
DMZ is the most natural answer if your group wants to remain inside MW4. Activision describes it as a living extraction sandbox where operators can “Loot, fight, negotiate, betray, and extract.” You can deploy alone or with a squad, making it a shared PvE/PvP activity even though it is not a scripted campaign.
The core loop is built around risk rather than a fixed sequence of story missions:
- Deploy. Enter an extraction zone solo or with your squad.
- Search for resources. Loot equipment and complete objectives while deciding how much risk your group can accept.
- React to other players and threats. Encounters can involve combat, negotiation or avoiding another squad.
- Reach an extraction point. Leaving successfully preserves the value of the run; being eliminated can cost what you carried.
This makes DMZ a good choice for friends who enjoy planning routes, dividing equipment roles and making decisions under pressure. It is a poor replacement for a co-op campaign if your priority is synchronized cutscenes, authored missions or a predictable difficulty curve. The persistent-risk extraction structure is the defining feature, not a linear narrative.

MW4’s Multiplayer is the better option when everyone wants short, repeatable matches. Activision lists 12 all-new 6v6 maps at launch, along with Gunfight, Ground War: Combat Outpost and Kill Block.

Unlike DMZ, Multiplayer does not ask you to protect a haul between deployments. A match ends, you return to the lobby and can change loadouts or queue again. That makes it easier to schedule for a group with limited time, while DMZ creates longer sessions in which one failed encounter can end a run.
Two-player split-screen Multiplayer
Activision’s editions information confirms two-player split-screen Multiplayer on PS5 and Xbox Series X. This is local Multiplayer, not a way to turn the Campaign into a shared story. You still need the game, compatible hardware and the platform’s required online access for online modes. The official information does not establish split-screen support for DMZ or for PC.

Is there Spec Ops or Zombies in MW4?
The current MW4 overview does not document a separate Spec Ops mode or a Zombies mode. It names Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ as the available mode categories. That means you should not buy MW4 expecting the cooperative Spec Ops mission structure associated with earlier releases or a round-based Zombies playlist unless Activision announces one separately.

Live-service plans can change. For a purchase decision today, however, the reliable co-op choices are DMZ, Multiplayer and—if you want story or Zombies—another title such as Black Ops 7.
Black Ops 7 is the strongest same-franchise co-op alternative
Co-Op Campaign for up to four players
Activision’s Black Ops 7 briefing says: “In Black Ops 7, you can go solo or squad up with up to three other players in this innovative Co-Op Campaign.” That means a full party can contain up to four players, including the person hosting the session.
This is the direct answer for a group that wants to experience a Call of Duty story together. The Campaign is designed around cooperative play rather than asking you to substitute a sandbox for narrative missions. It also culminates in a replayable Endgame, giving the group a reason to return after completing the main progression.
Round-based Zombies, survival maps and Dead Ops Arcade 4
Black Ops 7 also covers the horde-survival request that MW4’s documented lineup does not. Activision says round-based Zombies returns, with survival maps and new vehicle gameplay. The briefing also confirms Dead Ops Arcade 4, a top-down, twin-stick Zombies shooter described as co-op chaos for up to four players.

- Dead Ops Arcade 4: an arcade-style, top-down Zombies mode for up to four players, with XP progression.
These modes serve a different purpose from DMZ. Zombies is a PvE survival loop in which the main pressure comes from enemy waves and resource management. DMZ is an extraction sandbox in which other players, negotiation and the risk of losing a run are central.

Cross-mode progression
Black Ops 7 connects progression across its Co-Op Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies. Activision says XP, weapon progression, camouflage and challenge progress carry across those modes. A group can therefore move from the story to competitive matches or Zombies without treating each mode as a completely separate progression track.

The map counts are not a direct quality score. MW4’s 12 launch 6v6 maps are paired with several different rulesets, while Black Ops 7 advertises both 16 6v6 maps and two 20v20 maps. Choose based on whether your group values MW4’s specific modes and setting or wants the broader co-op package in Black Ops 7.
Which game should you choose for your group?
Choose Black Ops 7 for a shared story
Buy or play Black Ops 7 if your non-negotiable requirement is entering authored Campaign missions with friends. Its four-player Co-Op Campaign is the only option in this comparison that is explicitly built for that purpose. The replayable Endgame adds a second reason to keep the party together after the main story.

Choose Black Ops 7 for Zombies or survival
Choose Black Ops 7 if your group is specifically searching for round-based Zombies, survival maps or a four-player arcade shooter. Those modes are named in Activision’s briefing, whereas MW4’s current overview does not list Zombies.
Choose MW4 for extraction gameplay
Choose MW4 if your ideal session is a high-stakes squad sandbox. DMZ supports solo or squad deployments and emphasizes looting, objectives, encounters with other players and extraction. It is the right fit for a group that prefers emergent decisions to a fixed mission sequence.
Choose MW4 for its Multiplayer rulesets or local split-screen
MW4 is the more specific choice for players who want its 12 new 6v6 maps, Gunfight, Ground War: Combat Outpost or Kill Block. It is also the documented choice for two-player split-screen Multiplayer on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Black Ops 7’s briefing lists more launch maps overall, but that does not reproduce MW4’s exact mode lineup.

Choose based on party size
- Two people on one console: MW4 supports two-player split-screen Multiplayer on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
- Three or four people seeking a story: Black Ops 7’s Campaign supports up to four players.
- A squad that enjoys uncertain encounters: MW4 DMZ is built around extraction risk and interaction with other squads.
- A squad that wants PvE waves: Black Ops 7 Zombies and Dead Ops Arcade 4 are the documented choices.
How to plan an MW4 session with friends
Because MW4 does not document a co-op Campaign, decide what kind of group session you are organizing before launching the game.
- Pick the session type. Select DMZ for an extraction run, Multiplayer for repeatable matches, or local split-screen Multiplayer if two people are sharing a PS5 or Xbox Series X.
- Agree on risk before deploying to DMZ. Decide whether the group is pursuing loot, objectives or a quick extraction. A shared plan reduces arguments when a valuable item tempts someone to extend the run.
- Assign practical roles. One player can watch routes, another can carry support equipment and another can track the extraction plan. The game’s official description supports squad play, but it does not promise campaign-style role missions.
- Set a stopping rule. In an extraction mode, decide when the team leaves rather than assuming every run should continue until the inventory is full.
- Use Multiplayer for a reset. If the group loses a DMZ run or wants shorter sessions, move to 6v6, Gunfight, Ground War: Combat Outpost or Kill Block instead of expecting a cooperative story queue.
For Black Ops 7, the setup is simpler: form a party of up to four for the Co-Op Campaign, or select Zombies and Dead Ops Arcade 4 when the group wants PvE. Progression can continue across those modes, so the choice can follow the evening’s mood rather than a separate unlock plan.

Release date and editions
Activision Support lists October 23, 2026 as MW4’s worldwide launch date. Physical PS5 and Xbox Series X editions are available through select retailers and include the full base game. Retailer inventory can vary, so confirm the edition and included content at the time you purchase.
Online access
DMZ and online Multiplayer require an internet connection and the platform’s required online multiplayer subscription. The cited editions information does not provide a universal subscription name or price, so verify the current requirement for your console account and region.
PC readiness
For PC, Activision lists TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot as requirements. Multiplayer and DMZ also require a continuous internet connection because of texture streaming. Check those firmware and connectivity conditions before purchase; a system that runs other games is not automatically ready for these requirements.

- Plan for a continuously connected session when using Multiplayer or DMZ.
- Check the final PC specification and storage requirement when Activision publishes the release-ready details.
Common mistakes when comparing MW4 co-op options
Assuming DMZ is a campaign replacement
DMZ lets friends deploy together, but its objectives and encounters belong to an extraction sandbox. Do not promise a friend a four-player story campaign when you mean a squad DMZ session.

Assuming the mode names carry over between games
Spec Ops, Zombies and DMZ describe different designs. MW4’s current official overview documents DMZ and does not document Spec Ops or Zombies. Black Ops 7’s briefing documents Co-Op Campaign, round-based Zombies, survival maps and Dead Ops Arcade 4. Compare the actual loop rather than assuming a familiar name means the same feature is present.
Confusing map count with co-op support
MW4’s 12 all-new 6v6 maps and Black Ops 7’s 16 6v6 plus two 20v20 maps describe competitive scale, not the number of cooperative missions. Use the co-op-specific rows in the comparison when choosing for a story group.
Overlooking local-play limits
MW4’s documented split-screen support is for two-player Multiplayer on PS5 and Xbox Series X. It does not establish split-screen Campaign or split-screen DMZ. A four-person group should plan on separate systems and online play for Black Ops 7’s Co-Op Campaign unless the final platform documentation says otherwise.
Buying before checking launch information
MW4’s launch is dated October 23, 2026, and mode details can be updated around release. Check Activision’s final overview, platform requirements and edition contents if your decision depends on a particular feature.
The practical verdict
Modern Warfare 4 is not the right purchase if “campaign co-op” means a shared linear story. Its documented group options are DMZ’s squad extraction and Multiplayer’s competitive modes, with two-player split-screen Multiplayer on PS5 and Xbox Series X. It does not currently document Spec Ops or Zombies.
Black Ops 7 is the better same-franchise choice for co-op-first players: up to four people can play its Campaign, the Endgame is replayable, round-based Zombies and survival maps provide PvE alternatives, and Dead Ops Arcade 4 supports up to four players. Pick MW4 for its specific Multiplayer lineup and extraction sandbox; pick Black Ops 7 when the group’s first question is, “Can we play the story or Zombies together?”
