The best modern vanity lighting is sized to the vanity, puts useful light on your face, and is rated for its exact bathroom location. Choose an overhead bar when the wall layout favors one centered fixture; choose sconces at the mirror’s sides when there is room to spread light more evenly across your face. Then check color rendering, dimmer compatibility, and the fixture’s location rating before buying.
Choose between a vanity bar and side sconces
Modern fixtures often use clean rectangular bars or simple cylindrical, globe, and square shades. Either a bar or sconces can suit a contemporary bathroom; the practical difference is where the light falls and what the wall can accommodate.
Use a bar when one centered fixture fits the wall
A bar mounted above the mirror is a straightforward choice when there is a suitable electrical box and enough clearance. It can provide task lighting, but light coming from directly above the mirror may cast shadows on the face. The Home Depot’s Vanity Lighting Buying Guide recommends layering room lighting: ambient light for general visibility, task light for grooming, and accent light where desired.
Consider sconces when side space is available
Pairing sconces on either side of the mirror can place light closer to face level and help avoid relying on a single overhead source. This layout needs usable wall space and appropriate electrical locations. Eaton’s bathroom lighting guidance also warns that a light directly above the mirror can cause pronounced facial shadowing and suggests side lighting or locating overhead illumination away from the mirror.

Size the fixture to the vanity and mirror
As a starting point, the Home Depot buying guide suggests an over-vanity bar about four inches shorter than the vanity and centered above it. For a single-lamp bar, it suggests roughly one-third of the mirror’s width; multi-light bars can be around the mirror’s width or somewhat wider, but should remain no wider than the vanity. These are design recommendations, not fixed rules: check the actual mirror, fixture dimensions, wall space, and electrical-box position.
Set a practical mounting height
The Home Depot buying guide gives approximate starting heights of 75 inches above the floor for a bar and 65 inches for side sconces. A separate Home Depot height guide describes 75 to 80 inches above the floor for an above-mirror fixture, or placing the bar about three inches above the mirror when the mirror itself is high. These measurements are not code requirements. Adapt them to the fixture’s dimensions, mirror placement, users, and applicable local requirements.

Check light quality for grooming
Look at color rendering, not just the LED label
Color rendering describes how naturally a light source shows colors. Geberit recommends a bathroom color-rendering value above 90 Ra for natural-looking skin and hair tones. Treat this as that manufacturer’s recommendation rather than a universal requirement, and check the specification for the exact fixture. LED fixtures do not all have the same color-rendering performance.

Plan for the face as well as the room
A decorative fixture may look right on the wall but still leave the face unevenly lit. Consider the direction and placement of its light, and avoid making an overhead bar the only source if it creates shadows at the mirror. A layered arrangement can combine general room illumination with a vanity task light.

Verify the rating, lamps, and dimmer details
- Location rating: Check the exact fixture’s damp- or wet-location rating and installation instructions for where it will be placed. The Home Depot guide recommends a damp-area-rated fixture for bathroom use, but placement-specific requirements and local electrical rules still matter.
- Bulb design: Find out whether the fixture takes replaceable lamps or uses integrated LEDs. For replaceable bulbs, match the socket base and electrical specifications. An integrated LED fixture does not use a standard replaceable bulb in the same way.
- Dimming: Do not assume a fixture works with every dimmer. Confirm compatibility for the exact model and control. RAB Lighting’s RADIANCE collection, for example, specifies compatible dimmers and has different voltage and dimmer details for brass models than for other models.
- Finish and shade: Compare the finish and shade shape with the mirror, faucet, and other visible hardware, while keeping the light’s direction and usefulness in view.
- Installation: Confirm the electrical-box location and mounting orientation the fixture permits. Consult an electrician if wiring or local-code requirements are unclear.
Use product listings as model-specific evidence
The Home Depot listing for the MODERN HABITAT HAB-VL26-BR describes an 18-inch, three-light integrated LED wall fixture as suitable for damp locations. That listing illustrates the kind of product detail to check; it is not, by itself, an independent safety certification. RAB describes its RADIANCE vanity collection as damp rated, with 90 CRI and horizontal or vertical mounting options. In both cases, verify the exact model’s current specifications and instructions rather than generalizing a collection or one listing to every fixture.
