An all-in-one modem-router combo is convenient and can work well for many homes. Its main trade-off is flexibility: the modem and router share one device, so upgrading, positioning, diagnosing, or expanding the network can take more planning than with separate equipment. Whether any of these drawbacks matters depends on the combo, your ISP, your home, and what you need from your network.

What a modem-router combo does

A modem connects your home to your internet service provider (ISP); a router manages traffic and connections on your local network. A combo puts both functions in one enclosure, saving space and often simplifying setup. Separate modem and router units keep those functions distinct, which can give you more choice about which component to replace or how to arrange the network. Neither arrangement guarantees faster or more reliable service. Linksys explains how modems and routers work together.

1. You cannot upgrade the modem and router independently

If the combo’s Wi-Fi features no longer meet your needs but its modem still works with your service, replacing the whole unit may mean replacing a usable modem too. The reverse can also happen: a modem or service change could leave you replacing a router that otherwise suits you. With separate equipment, you can often change just the component that needs an upgrade, provided the replacement modem is compatible with your ISP and plan.

This is a choice and replacement trade-off, not proof that combos are inherently outdated or that separate hardware performs better. Some combos can also be used with a separate router, depending on the equipment and ISP. Start.ca describes the flexibility of separate devices and using some combos in bridge mode.

2. Wi-Fi placement is tied to the modem connection

A combo’s Wi-Fi access point sits where the device must connect to the ISP’s line. That spot may not be ideal for distributing a wireless signal throughout your home. A separate router can be placed elsewhere when the connection between it and the modem allows; a mesh system can offer another way to arrange Wi-Fi coverage.

A different layout may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Building materials, interference, placement, and the capabilities of the equipment all affect coverage. A router or mesh system also does not, by itself, resolve every modem, plan, or ISP problem. TP-Link’s Deco guidance covers router and access point modes with an existing router, and NETGEAR explains how an Orbi system can be used with a modem or gateway.

3. Diagnosing a fault can be less direct

When internet access drops, the problem could be on the ISP connection or modem side, or in the router, Wi-Fi, or local network. In a combo, those functions share a device, so isolating the source may involve checking the ISP connection and the local network on the same unit. Separate equipment can make it easier to test the modem and router independently.

That is a diagnostic trade-off, not evidence that combo devices fail more often or that every fault is harder to fix. The relevant troubleshooting steps depend on the model, ISP, and symptoms. Linksys’s overview of modem and router roles helps distinguish the two functions.

4. Adding a router or mesh system can require configuration

If you connect another router to a combo that is still routing, both devices may perform network address translation (NAT). This arrangement is called double NAT; it can complicate some network setups. One way to avoid having both devices manage routing is bridge mode, which disables routing on one device so the other takes over. TP-Link defines it this way: “Bridge mode is a router setting that turns off the routing function on one device so another can take full control of your network.” TP-Link’s bridge-mode explainer discusses double NAT and when bridge mode may help.

Bridge mode is not available on every gateway, and menus and instructions differ by ISP and equipment. If bridge mode is unavailable, some devices support access point (AP) mode, which lets the added device provide Wi-Fi without acting as a second router. Check your ISP’s instructions and the manuals for both devices before changing settings. NETGEAR explains router mode and AP mode; TP-Link covers router and AP modes for Deco with an existing router.

How to decide whether these trade-offs matter

A combo may be a sensible choice if it meets your service requirements, provides suitable Wi-Fi for your home, and you value simpler setup and fewer pieces of equipment. Consider separate equipment, or adding a compatible router or mesh system, when you have a specific need such as changing only one component, choosing different router features, or arranging Wi-Fi independently of the modem connection.

  • Advanced Modem Tech: Uses DOCSIS 3.1 for faster speeds, better security, and smoother gaming.

  • Check modem compatibility with your ISP and internet plan before replacing equipment.
  • Compare the router features and firmware support you need with what the combo provides.
  • If coverage is the issue, consider home layout and placement as well as router or mesh capabilities; a new device is not a guaranteed improvement.
  • Confirm whether the gateway supports bridge mode or whether the added system supports AP mode, and follow the ISP’s setup guidance.
  • Factor in setup and maintenance: separate equipment adds devices to configure and maintain. The Consumer Technology Association notes that users managing their own router need to keep its firmware updated, while ISP-provided equipment may also require users to check how updates are handled.
