Yes, in a limited technical demonstration. Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal has ported the open-source KytyPS5 emulator to Xbox Series X under the console’s official Developer Mode. The Xbox version, called PS5X, has reportedly booted four PS5 game builds, but it is not general PS5 backward compatibility or a finished consumer product.
What PS5X actually is
PS5X is an experimental Xbox Series X port of KytyPS5, an early-stage PlayStation 5 emulator. It runs in Xbox Developer Mode, a Microsoft-provided environment intended for software development and testing rather than ordinary retail-console use.
Uenal described the project as a research effort running PS5 homebrew and legally obtained game backups. The work demonstrates that some PS5 software can start on Xbox hardware; it does not mean the Xbox Series X can now run the PS5 library reliably.

Reports in September and October 2026 identified four game builds that booted on PS5X:
#1 Best Overall
- What's in the box: Xbox Series X console, 1 Xbox Wireless Controller - Carbon Black, Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, Power cord.
- Equipped with AMD's Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures, DirectX ray tracing delivers true-to-life lighting, shadows and accurate reflections to create dynamic, living worlds.
- Memory: 16GB GDDR6 w/320 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 10 GB @ 560 GB/s, 6 GB @ 336 GB/s; Internal Storage: 1TB Custom NVME SSD
- Gaming Resolution: True 4K; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; High Dynamic Range: Up to 8K HDR; Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-Ray; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
- Bundled with HDMI_Cable
| Game | Reported result |
|---|---|
| GEX Trilogy | Build reportedly ran; Xbox controller input was recognized. |
| Hellboy: Web of Wyrd | Build reportedly ran; Xbox controller input was recognized. |
| Marvel Cosmic Invasion | Build reportedly ran; Xbox controller input was recognized. |
| Quake II | Footage was reported at approximately 25–45 frames per second; Xbox controller input was recognized. |
Some demonstrations included working audio, although the reports did not identify which individual games produced sound. Separate coverage said performance sometimes dropped below 20 FPS and that input latency was noticeable. Those are observations from demonstrations, not independent benchmarks or a promise that any title works from beginning to end.
None of the four demonstrated games is a PlayStation exclusive. A later PS5X menu reportedly displayed larger games including Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time and Gran Turismo 7, but the available reports did not show those games running.

Why running PS5 software on Xbox is difficult
Vulkan must be translated to DirectX
KytyPS5 uses the Vulkan graphics API on PC. Xbox consoles do not provide native Vulkan support, so PS5X has to translate the emulator’s Vulkan graphics work into Microsoft’s DirectX graphics path. That additional translation layer consumes development effort and can introduce performance, compatibility and rendering problems.
As Uenal put it, “Since Vulkan isn’t supported, everything needs to be translated to DirectX.” Improvements made to the PC version therefore cannot simply be copied to Xbox; the graphics backend must be adapted and debugged for the console environment.

Emulation requires more than launching a program
A game reaching a menu is only one checkpoint. A usable emulator must also handle graphics rendering, shader compilation, audio, controller input, memory behavior, timing, loading, crashes and the many hardware assumptions built into each game. Differences in firmware, system software and required encryption keys can affect whether a particular build starts at all.
Can an Xbox Series X play PS5 games now?
Not in the normal consumer sense. PS5X shows a proof of concept: selected builds can boot in Developer Mode under specific conditions. The evidence does not establish a public, consumer-ready release, a stable installation package, broad compatibility or reliable completion of any particular game.

- There is no published compatibility percentage for the PS5 library.
- No verified count of fully playable games has been provided.
- The reported frame rates are demonstration observations, not a system-wide performance rating.
- Booting a game build does not prove that it can be played through without crashes or severe graphical errors.
What you would need—and what remains unconfirmed
The demonstrations used an Xbox Series X in Developer Mode, so ordinary retail mode is not the environment shown. You would also need a PS5X build if and when the developer makes one publicly available, plus game data and any required system files or keys. The reports reviewed here do not establish a general public download, a complete setup guide, supported firmware versions or a finalized list of requirements.
KytyPS5’s project policy says it does not distribute games or copyrighted system software and instructs users: “Use only game files that you have obtained legally.” Emulation software does not grant permission to download or share copyrighted games, firmware or keys.
How to interpret the current demonstrations
What has been proven
- An Xbox Series X can run an experimental KytyPS5 port in Developer Mode.
- Four multiplatform PS5 game builds have reportedly booted.
- Xbox controller input worked in the demonstrated builds, and audio worked in at least some cases.
- Quake II footage reached roughly 25–45 FPS in the report that measured it.
What has not been proven
- Playable PS5 exclusives on Xbox.
- Stable performance across the PS5 catalog.
- Completion of the demonstrated games from start to finish.
- A polished public release suitable for typical Xbox owners.
What to watch as PS5X develops
Future reports will be more useful if they distinguish between a title reaching a menu, entering gameplay and completing a full playthrough. They should also record frame-rate stability, graphics accuracy, audio, controller behavior, crashes, required firmware or keys, and whether the tested build is publicly downloadable. PS5 exclusives should be listed separately from multiplatform games, because the first reported demonstrations involved only multiplatform titles.
Bottom line for Xbox owners
PS5X is an impressive emulation experiment, not a new Xbox feature. It currently shows that carefully selected PS5 builds can run—with limitations—on Xbox Series X Developer Mode. Until the project has a public release, broader compatibility and stable long-session results, Xbox owners should treat it as an evolving proof of concept rather than a practical way to replace a PS5.
