A nine-year Xbox 360 hardware-modding project finally worked in 2026 when a Raspberry Pi Pico replaced the programmer hardware that had stalled it in 2017. The Pico did not crack Microsoft’s signing key or act as the glitch chip: it dumped the console’s NAND and programmed a Matrix CoolRunner, while the CoolRunner generated the precisely timed reset pulse used by the Reset Glitch Hack (RGH).
What changed between 2017 and 2026
Kennedn’s project began in 2017 with a Matrix CoolRunner Rev D and an attempted DIY LPT-port NAND/JTAG programmer. The programmer failed, and the proposed NAND dump would have taken more than 30 minutes, so the console and chip were put aside.
In 2026, the same hardware was revisited. A Raspberry Pi Pico running PicoFlasher dumped the NAND in a few seconds. A second Pico setup, using pico-dirtyJTAG and urjtag, programmed the CoolRunner with Octal450 timing files. The old exploit concept had not suddenly become new; the inexpensive, faster tooling removed the practical bottleneck.
“And I have seen this first hand, a project that defeated me in 2017 was made trivial in 2026 by a £5 microcontroller.”

—Kennedn’s October 8, 2026 project write-up
A software-only Xbox360PeerPressure exploit appeared during the week before the hardware project was completed. That changed the practical reason to perform a soldered RGH installation, but the hardware work remains a useful demonstration of fault injection and low-cost console tooling.
What the Xbox 360 voltage glitch actually does
The Xbox 360’s first-stage bootloader, known as 1BL, is embedded in the CPU. It verifies the Microsoft signature on the next boot stage before allowing the system to continue. RGH attacks the assumption that this computation always runs under stable electrical conditions.

- 【Build Project in Tiny Size】Only 2.1cm*5.1cm ( as small as your thumb). Pico has been designed to use either soldered 0.1" pin-headers or can be used as a surface-mountable 'module'.
A glitcher briefly toggles the CPU reset signal at a carefully selected instant. The disturbance can make one instruction execute incorrectly. The documented attack targets an mr register-move instruction during signature verification, allowing an incorrect value to reach the comparison path. If the timing is right, the console proceeds far enough to run modified software.
This is not a cryptographic key recovery. The signature system is not “cracked” mathematically; a physical fault causes the processor to mishandle part of the verification routine.

The timing window
Kennedn reports a pulse of about 100 nanoseconds in this project. ConsoleMods describes typical RGH reset pulses as roughly 100–200 nanoseconds, with the useful timing dependent on the motherboard and installation method. A nanosecond-scale window is why a suitable timing controller and careful wiring matter.
What the Raspberry Pi Pico does—and does not do
| Job | Tool in the project | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| NAND access | PicoFlasher on a Raspberry Pi Pico | Reads the Xbox 360 NAND in seconds so the console’s data can be prepared for the modification. |
| JTAG programming | pico-dirtyJTAG, urjtag and a Raspberry Pi Pico | Writes Octal450 timing files to the Matrix CoolRunner. |
| Runtime glitching | Matrix CoolRunner Rev D | Generates the timed reset pulse during the console’s boot process. |
The Pico is therefore a programmer and timing-tool platform in this build, not a drop-in replacement for the separate glitch chip. Its RP2040 programmable-I/O blocks run from a 133 MHz clock, giving an effective timing step of approximately 7.5 nanoseconds. That resolution is useful when the target event is only around 100 nanoseconds wide.

How a Pico-based RGH installation is organised
There is no single universal wiring diagram. The exact points, timing files and method depend on the Xbox 360 motherboard, dashboard history and whether a glitch chip is used. At a high level, the workflow is:
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify the motherboard. Confirm whether the console is a compatible Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper, Trinity, Corona or other board, and check whether it is a Winchester system, which is excluded from the standard RGH compatibility list cited by ConsoleMods.
- Open the console and expose the board. RGH requires physical access. The installer must reach board points and route wires inside the chassis.
- Read and verify the NAND. Connect the Pico running PicoFlasher, make redundant reads, and compare the dumps before changing anything. The 2026 project reduced this stage from a projected 30-plus-minute LPT operation to a few seconds.
- Prepare the timing hardware. Use pico-dirtyJTAG and urjtag to program the CoolRunner with the timing file appropriate to the chosen RGH method and motherboard.
- Solder the installation. Connect power, ground, reset and motherboard-specific signal points according to a current board diagram. Wire length, routing and solder quality affect signal timing.
- Test and tune boot behaviour. A successful install should boot consistently. If it loops, stalls or never reaches the modified dashboard, stop and recheck the board identification, NAND files, solder joints, wire routing and timing choice rather than repeatedly powering a questionable installation.
ConsoleMods warns that inexperienced soldering or incorrect wiring can permanently brick the console. This is not a software-only procedure, even though a later software exploit may offer an alternative for some owners.

Which Xbox 360 motherboards support which RGH method?
| Method | Typical compatibility | Separate glitch chip? | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| RGH1 | Older “phat” consoles and older dashboard conditions | Yes | Applicable only to the older combinations for which its timing works. |
| RGH1.2 | Many phat boards | Yes | Often preferred for more reliable phat-console boots than RGH3. |
| RGH2 | Slim systems and some phat systems | Yes | Motherboard- and timing-dependent; not a universal Slim or phat recipe. |
| EXT_CLK | Some Xenon and Zephyr boards | Yes | Uses an external-clock approach for boards where other methods are unsuitable. |
| RGH3 | Generally strongest fit for Slim and E systems | No | Chipless and simpler in parts count, but phat boards can have slow or inconsistent boots because of timing and southbridge limitations. |
RGH3 uses the southbridge SMC rather than a separate glitch chip. For a phat console, ConsoleMods guidance commonly points installers toward RGH1.2 when reliable boot consistency matters more than eliminating the chip.
Is the “$4 microcontroller” claim accurate?
The project report identifies the Pico as costing £5, the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s launch price in 2021. Calling it a “$4” microcontroller is an approximate currency conversion, not a documented 2026 retail price. The report does not establish current stock, regional pricing or a recurring cost for the complete installation.
The board’s low price is significant because it replaced two awkward tools at once: a slow or failed NAND programmer and a way to program the CoolRunner. It did not remove the need for the glitch chip, console-specific wiring, soldering equipment or time spent diagnosing boot failures.

Risks, limitations and the software alternative
- Brick risk: A bad NAND image, wrong timing file, lifted pad or solder bridge can leave the console unbootable.
- Model dependence: RGH timing and wiring are not interchangeable between motherboard families.
- Boot consistency: RGH3 can be less predictable on phat systems; a chip-based method may be the more reliable choice there.
- Physical access: The console must be opened, and the work requires fine soldering on board points.
- Changing alternatives: Xbox360PeerPressure’s software-only exploit appeared shortly before the project finished, so owners should evaluate whether hardware modification is justified for their specific console and use case.
The enduring lesson is about accessible tooling. The RGH technique was already understood in 2017; in 2026, a £5 microcontroller with programmable I/O made the supporting NAND and JTAG operations fast and precise enough to complete the old project.
