To let friends join a modded Java Minecraft server from outside your home, forward the TCP port shown in server.properties from your router to the computer running the server. The default is 25565. Then keep that computer’s private IP address stable, allow Java through its firewall, and test from localhost, your LAN, and finally another network. Modded play does not require a special networking method, but every player must run compatible Minecraft, loader, mod, and modpack versions.
What port forwarding does for a modded Minecraft server
Your server computer normally has a private address such as 192.168.1.50. Your household router has a public address supplied by your internet provider. Port forwarding creates a rule that takes an incoming connection addressed to the router’s public address and sends it to the server computer’s private address and listening port.

For a normal Java server, the default listening port is TCP 25565. The number is not inherently tied to Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or a particular modpack. A modded server uses the same Java networking path as an unmodded server; the loader and mods change the software running after the connection reaches it.
Use the value actually configured in server.properties. If you changed server-port to another number, forward that number instead. The external port, the internal port, the host firewall rule, and the address players use must all agree.

Before you begin: requirements and a planning worksheet
Have these items ready before editing the router:
- A working dedicated Java server for your selected loader and modpack.
- Administrative access to the home router or gateway.
- A stable private IP address for the computer hosting the server.
- Permission to create an inbound rule in the host operating system’s firewall.
- A trusted player on a different internet connection for the final test.

Router manufacturers use different labels. Look for Port Forwarding, Virtual Server, NAT Forwarding, or an equivalent section. A router rule cannot fix a server that is not listening, a host firewall that drops traffic, or an internet connection that does not provide a routable public address.
Step 1: prepare and start the modded server
Use the loader’s documented server files
Install the server files and launch command supplied by the loader you selected. Do not assume that a client installation is a dedicated server. Start the server and wait until its console indicates that it has completed startup and is accepting connections.

Resolve startup failures first
If the server crashes or never reaches a running state, inspect logs/latest.log and the console before changing the router. Commonly relevant conditions include a missing dependency, an incorrect Java runtime, an incompatible mod, or a port already occupied by another process.
When another process already uses the selected port, stop that process or choose a different server-port. After changing it, use the new number consistently in the router rule, the host firewall, local tests, LAN tests, and the address given to players.
Step 2: read and set server.properties
Find the listening port
Open the server.properties file in the server directory and locate:

Leave server-ip blank in the usual home setup
Unless your loader or network design specifically requires a bind address, leave the server-ip value empty. A manually entered address that is wrong, outdated, or assigned to another interface can prevent the server from accepting connections. The router forwards to the host’s private IP; the server does not normally need that address written into server-ip.
Restart after edits
Save the file and restart the server after changing the port or bind setting. Confirm in the console and log that startup completes. Test locally before proceeding to the router so you know the application itself is healthy.
Step 3: give the host a stable private IP address
Port forwarding points to a private address. If the router later gives the server computer a different address through DHCP, the rule will continue forwarding to the old device and appear to have stopped working.
Prefer a DHCP reservation
In the router’s LAN or DHCP settings, create a reservation for the server computer. The reservation associates that device with one private IPv4 address while allowing the router to manage the rest of the network normally.
Use another stable assignment only when you understand the network
A manually configured private address can also work, but it must not conflict with the router’s DHCP pool or another device. Whichever method you choose, record the resulting address; it is the destination in the forwarding rule and the address used for the LAN test.
Step 4: create the router port-forwarding rule
- Sign in to the router or gateway that is directly connected to the internet.
- Open the page named Port Forwarding, Virtual Server, NAT Forwarding, or a similar option.
- Create a rule with a recognizable name such as
Minecraft-Java. - Select TCP as the protocol.
- Set the external or public port to the value in
server-port. - Set the internal or private port to the same value unless your router explicitly supports a different outside-to-inside mapping that you intend to use.
- Enter the reserved private IP address of the server computer as the destination.
- Save or apply the rule, then verify that it is enabled.
For an unchanged default configuration, the resulting mapping is TCP 25565 on the router to host-private-IP:25565. Do not add extra ports merely because the server is modded. Forward another port only when a separately documented service in the modpack actually listens there.
Make sure you edited the internet-facing router
In homes with a modem/router plus a second personal router, the first device may be doing NAT as well. A rule entered on the inner router will not be enough if the outer gateway still blocks unsolicited traffic. This double-NAT condition is diagnosed in the troubleshooting section below.

Step 5: allow Java through the host firewall
Operating-system firewalls and security suites are separate from the router. Allow the Java executable or the server process to accept inbound TCP connections on the selected port. If the firewall asks whether to allow the application on private networks, choose the profile that matches your home LAN; expose only the port and application required for the server.
Check additional security layers separately: a security suite may have its own inbound rules, and some gateways or internet providers offer another firewall control. A successful router mapping cannot compensate for a host firewall that silently drops Java traffic.
After changing the firewall, restart the server if the operating system or security software requires it, and repeat the local and LAN tests rather than jumping directly to an external scan.
Step 6: test in three stages
Testing in order isolates the failing layer. Record the exact address and port used at each stage.

On the server computer, connect to:
localhost:25565Replace 25565 with your configured port. A successful connection proves that the server process is running and listening locally. If it fails, the router is not yet relevant: check the server console, logs/latest.log, server-port, and any port conflict.
2. LAN test: the private address
From another device connected to the same home network, connect to the host’s reserved private address and port, for example:
192.168.1.50:25565Use the actual private address, not localhost; on the second device, localhost means that second device. If localhost works but the LAN test fails, inspect the host firewall, the server-ip binding, and whether both devices are truly on the same network rather than an isolated guest Wi-Fi.

3. External test: another network
Ask a trusted player on a different internet connection to connect to your public IPv4 address and port. The server must remain running while the test is made. Testing your public address from inside your own LAN can produce a false failure because many routers do not support NAT loopback (also called hairpin NAT).
Once an outside connection succeeds, provide the public address and port only to the people you trust to join the server.
Diagnose a “closed” port by the layer that failed

Double NAT, WAN mismatch, and CGNAT
Double NAT
Double NAT exists when an upstream modem/router translates addresses and a second router performs another translation. Compare the WAN or internet address shown by your inner router with the public IPv4 address observed from an external network. If they differ, the inner router is not directly holding the public address.
Resolve this by putting the upstream gateway into bridge or modem mode when appropriate, or by forwarding the same port through every NAT layer. The exact menus depend on the equipment, so do not assume that a rule on only one device is sufficient.
CGNAT
With carrier-grade NAT, the provider shares one public IPv4 address among multiple customers. Your router’s WAN address will not match the public address seen externally, and unsolicited inbound forwarding generally cannot reach your home. Repeatedly editing the same rule will not solve that limitation.
Ask the provider for a routable public address if available, use a tunnel or VPN-style relay that accepts the outside connection and carries it to the server, or host the server on an internet-reachable machine. Confirm the privacy, latency, capacity, and cost implications of any alternative before moving players.

- The same Minecraft version.
- The same loader family and a compatible loader build.
- The same versions of required mods.
- The same modpack configuration, including matching configuration files when the pack requires them.
Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge are different loader families; their builds are not interchangeable. Do not place client-only mods on a dedicated server unless that mod’s documentation explicitly supports server installation. When a player receives a missing-mod, wrong-version, or registry mismatch error after the network test succeeds, fix the pack rather than changing the port rule.

Security and day-to-day operation
Share the public address carefully
Minecraft Help strongly warns against posting a public IP openly because exposing it creates a security risk to the home network. Send the address and port privately to trusted players, and avoid publishing it in public posts or livestream overlays.
Limit the exposed surface
Forward only the Minecraft TCP port. Remove temporary rules for services you no longer run. Keep the router, operating system, Java runtime, loader, and mods updated through their normal supported channels, and stop the server before maintenance.
Keep the destination predictable
Monitor the host’s private address after router reboots or network changes. If the reservation disappears, restore it before troubleshooting an apparently broken server. Keep a note of the configured port, reserved address, loader version, and pack version so players can reproduce the same setup.
Choosing an alternative when direct forwarding is impossible
Direct forwarding gives the most direct path when you control a router with a routable public address. A relay or hosted server can be practical when CGNAT, apartment-network restrictions, or unavailable router access prevents inbound connections.

The available evidence establishes the networking limitation and these trade-offs, but not a particular relay provider, hosted plan, or current price. Evaluate those details directly with any service you consider.
