There is no single best GPU cloud. Choose Modal for code-first serverless inference, bursty APIs, and parallel batch work; choose RunPod when you need hands-on control of containers, storage, GPU selection, or a persistent machine; choose Lambda On-Demand Cloud when a conventional Linux GPU virtual machine and explicit multi-GPU training shape matter most.

The providers use different execution models, so an hourly GPU price alone cannot decide the purchase. Your real cost and productivity depend on cold starts, idle time, storage, regional capacity, scaling behavior, and how much infrastructure you want to operate.

Quick answer: which provider fits your workload?

Choose Best fit Why Main trade-off
Modal Bursty inference, batch jobs, code-defined deployments, and teams that want minimal infrastructure work Hosted serverless execution, automatic scaling, per-second billing, and infrastructure defined in code Less host-level control than a VM or persistent Pod
RunPod Interactive development, custom containers, persistent workloads, flexible GPU selection, and serverless APIs Pods expose direct control over the container, storage, GPU type, and runtime; Serverless adds demand-based workers You must make more decisions about images, storage, runtime state, and capacity
Lambda On-Demand Cloud Linux VM workflows, SSH-style administration, long training runs, and predefined multi-GPU machines Provisioned GPU-backed virtual machines with one-, two-, four-, and eight-GPU configurations for several models Capacity is tied to a selected region and instance shape; scaling is not serverless

Modal and RunPod can both scale GPU workers with demand, while Lambda gives you a machine that remains under your control until you stop it. That distinction is more important than a small difference in advertised GPU rates.

How the three GPU clouds work differently

Execution model

Modal runs functions and jobs from a code-defined environment. You specify the container requirements and GPU in code, submit the workload, and Modal hosts the underlying execution. Its documentation describes low-latency inference, sub-second cold starts, massively parallel batch jobs, training and fine-tuning, GPU-backed notebooks, and isolated Sandboxes.

RunPod has two complementary models. A Pod is a dedicated environment where you select the GPU, container, storage, and runtime. A Serverless endpoint runs custom workers that start and stop as requests arrive. You can therefore use one provider for an always-on development machine and a demand-driven inference API.

Lambda’s On-Demand Cloud is a virtual-machine service. You choose a predefined Linux GPU instance, in a region with capacity, and administer the host as you would another Linux server. The model is predictable for software that expects a long-lived filesystem, background processes, or direct host access.

Scaling behavior

Modal and RunPod Serverless can add GPU workers when demand rises and remove them when demand falls. This is useful when traffic is uneven or when a batch has thousands of independent tasks. You still need to account for image startup, model loading, concurrency limits, and any storage initialization in the observed latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With Lambda, you select capacity before the job starts. Adding GPUs means launching another instance or choosing a larger shape, not waiting for an endpoint to autoscale. That extra planning is often worthwhile for tightly coupled distributed training, where stable multi-GPU topology matters more than automatic request scaling.

Operational control

Modal deliberately hides most infrastructure. The provider’s guide says containers and GPU specifications are defined in code and that a basic workflow does not require Kubernetes, Docker, or an AWS account. This shortens the path from a Python project to a callable GPU function, but it also means fewer opportunities to tune the underlying host.

RunPod Pods and Lambda VMs expose more of the environment. You can choose an image, install system packages, retain files, run services, and inspect processes. That flexibility helps with unusual CUDA dependencies, custom compilation, and long interactive sessions; it also makes configuration drift and forgotten idle resources your responsibility.

Billing shape

Modal publishes GPU task rates by the second and says it charges for hosted execution by actual usage. RunPod advertises per-second billing for Cloud GPUs, with no minimums and no egress fees on its product page. Lambda pricing is attached to the selected instance and current regional availability rather than a single universal GPU-second rate.

For all three, calculate the complete run: GPU time, CPU or system resources where charged, startup and teardown time, persistent storage, snapshots, and any time a VM or Pod is running without useful work. A cheap GPU that spends most of its life idle can cost more than a higher-rate serverless task that stops promptly.

Modal: best for code-first serverless GPU execution

What Modal provides

Modal hosts the execution environment, so your application describes the image, dependencies, and GPU in code rather than through a manually managed server. The platform is designed for low-latency inference, parallel batch processing, model training and fine-tuning, GPU notebooks, and isolated Sandboxes. Modal’s documentation specifically presents serverless execution with per-second usage billing.

This approach is a strong match for an API whose request volume changes throughout the day. Workers can be created for a burst, process requests, and disappear when demand ends. It is also useful for embarrassingly parallel jobs such as document embedding, image transformation, or evaluation runs, where many short-lived workers are preferable to one permanently running machine.

Published GPU rates

The following are Modal’s published GPU task rates and their approximate hourly equivalents. Rates can change, so treat them as a reference rather than a price guarantee.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

GPU Published rate per second Approximate rate per hour Qualification
H100 SXM5 $0.001097 About $3.95 Published task rate; actual spend depends on seconds used and other applicable resources
A100 80 GB $0.000694 About $2.50 Published task rate; actual spend depends on seconds used and other applicable resources
T4 $0.000164 About $0.59 Published task rate; actual spend depends on seconds used and other applicable resources

For scale, 10 minutes on a T4 at the published rate is approximately $0.0984 of GPU time (600 seconds × $0.000164), before any other charge. A full hour on an H100 SXM5 is approximately $3.95 at that rate. These calculations are not performance benchmarks; model size, precision, batching, and kernel efficiency determine how much useful work each second delivers.

Plans and fixed charges

Modal lists a free Starter plan with a $30 monthly compute credit. The Team plan lists a $250 monthly platform charge in addition to compute. An Enterprise plan is also available. The credit and platform fee are plan terms, not GPU discounts, so compare the expected monthly workload with the plan’s fixed cost before moving a production API.

Where Modal is strongest

  • Bursty inference: request-driven workers avoid paying for a permanently idle GPU.
  • Parallel batch work: code-defined jobs can fan out without building a cluster scheduler.
  • Developer speed: the basic workflow does not require you to operate Kubernetes, Docker, or an AWS account.
  • Short experiments: per-second charging makes brief tests easier to isolate from a long-running VM bill.
  • Hosted notebooks and Sandboxes: useful when you want GPU-backed exploration without maintaining a personal server image.

Where Modal is less suitable

  • A workload that requires permanent host processes, specialized kernel modules, or unrestricted SSH-style administration may fit a VM or Pod better.
  • Long sessions with substantial idle periods can be harder to reason about if the application does not release workers cleanly.
  • Teams that need to tune every layer of the container and storage stack may prefer RunPod Pods or Lambda.

How to start a Modal workload

  1. Define the runtime image and Python or system dependencies in the project code.
  2. Select the required GPU and set the function or job’s concurrency behavior.
  3. Package model weights and decide where durable artifacts, checkpoints, and logs will live.
  4. Deploy a small test function, measure cold-start and warm-request latency, and verify that workers terminate when the queue is empty.
  5. Set usage limits and monitor GPU seconds, failed retries, and storage growth before opening the endpoint to production traffic.

RunPod: best for flexible Pods plus serverless endpoints

What RunPod provides

RunPod describes Cloud GPUs for AI development, training, fine-tuning, batch jobs, and long-running workloads. Its product page advertises more than 30 GPU models, 31 global regions, deployment in under 30 seconds, per-second billing, no egress fees, and no minimums. GPU inventory, regional availability, and prices are volatile; check the live product page when you are ready to deploy.

RunPod Pods

A Pod is the choice when you want direct control over the container, storage, GPU type, and runtime environment. You can keep a development filesystem, attach the data needed for training, install packages interactively, and leave services running between sessions. This is closer to renting a GPU machine than invoking a stateless function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pods are particularly useful for notebook-based experimentation, custom CUDA builds, interactive debugging, and jobs whose working set is too stateful for a short request. The cost risk is idle time: a Pod that remains powered on while nobody is using it continues to consume resources.

RunPod Serverless

Serverless endpoints use custom workers for model inference and other cloud applications. Workers scale with demand, making this model appropriate for APIs with unpredictable traffic or for jobs that can be represented as independent requests. You control the worker image and handler, while RunPod manages the worker lifecycle.

Serverless is not automatically cheaper than a Pod. It tends to win when utilization is spiky and workers can shut down cleanly. A continuously busy endpoint may be simpler or more economical on a persistent Pod, especially if model loading dominates each worker’s lifetime.

Choosing Pods or Serverless

Question Choose Pods when… Choose Serverless when…
Does state need to persist? You need a durable interactive filesystem, background process, or long-lived service. Each request can load or access its required state through the worker design.
How does demand behave? GPU utilization is steady or you need an always-available development machine. Traffic arrives in bursts or jobs can scale out and back in.
How much host control is required? You need direct container, storage, GPU, and runtime control. You still need a custom worker but prefer demand-based lifecycle management.
What is the main operational risk? Forgetting to stop an idle resource. Cold starts, worker concurrency, and model initialization time.

RunPod workflow

  1. Select the GPU model and region after checking current inventory, price, and expected memory requirements.
  2. Choose a container image that matches the CUDA, driver, framework, and Python versions your model needs.
  3. For a Pod, attach the required persistent storage and configure the runtime; for Serverless, package a custom worker and its request handler.
  4. Download or mount model weights, run a representative inference or training step, and record initialization time separately from steady-state time.
  5. Configure shutdown, autoscaling, logging, and retry behavior. Stop a Pod when it is not needed, and set Serverless limits that prevent an unexpected worker surge.
  6. Recheck region capacity and GPU pricing before a large training run because both inventory and rates can change.

Lambda On-Demand Cloud: best for conventional GPU virtual machines

What Lambda provides

Lambda describes On-Demand Cloud (ODC) as on-demand access to Linux-based, GPU-backed virtual-machine instances. Its documented families include B200, GH200, H100, A100, A10, A6000, Tesla V100, and RTX 6000. Several models are offered in one-, two-, four-, and eight-GPU configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This VM model suits software that expects SSH-like administration, a persistent host, local scratch space, system services, or a stable multi-GPU topology. It is a natural fit for conventional training scripts and distributed jobs that are easier to manage on a known Linux machine than inside short-lived workers.

Region and capacity considerations

Each Lambda instance is tied to a geographical region. You must check capacity in the region you want at purchase time; an attractive configuration may not be immediately available everywhere. Regional placement can also affect data movement, latency to users, and where checkpoints are stored.

GH200 architecture warning

Lambda’s documentation warns that intended ARM workloads should be verified before choosing a GH200-based ARM instance. Confirm that your operating system, compiled extensions, container images, and framework wheels support the architecture. A model that works on x86 GPUs may require different dependencies or a rebuild on ARM.

Lambda workflow

  1. Identify the GPU memory, CPU, system memory, storage, and GPU count required by the training or inference job.
  2. Choose a documented instance shape and check its region for current capacity.
  3. Confirm the host architecture, especially if considering a GH200-based ARM instance, and validate framework and CUDA compatibility.
  4. Launch the Linux VM, apply security updates, install the required drivers and frameworks, and configure persistent data and checkpoint storage.
  5. Run a single-GPU smoke test before starting multi-GPU training; verify that every GPU is visible and that inter-process communication is configured correctly.
  6. Stop or terminate the instance as soon as the job ends, and retain only the storage and snapshots you actually need.

Cost comparison: GPU rate is only one part of the bill

Lambda Pricing depends on the selected VM instance and current regional availability A single GPU-hour rate that applies to every model or region

A practical total-cost calculation

Estimate each candidate with the same workload assumptions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Useful GPU time: seconds spent processing requests, training steps, or batch items.
  • Startup and loading: image pulls, dependency setup, and model-weight loading that occupy a worker or VM.
  • Idle time: the period a Pod or VM remains available but performs no useful work.
  • Storage: model weights, datasets, checkpoints, snapshots, and persistent volumes.
  • Scaling overhead: duplicate model copies, warm pools, retries, and failed workers.
  • Data transfer and regional placement: especially when data, users, and GPUs are in different locations.

For a short, bursty API, Modal’s per-second execution or RunPod Serverless may avoid paying for idle capacity. For a steady 24-hour training run, the comparison changes: a provisioned multi-GPU VM or persistent Pod may eliminate repeated startup and model-loading overhead. Run the estimate with your measured utilization instead of assuming that the provider with the lowest headline rate will finish the job fastest.

Best choice by AI workload

Low-latency inference API

Start with Modal when sub-second cold starts and automatic scaling are central requirements. Its hosted model minimizes infrastructure work. RunPod Serverless is a strong alternative when you need a custom worker image or more direct control over the runtime. Use a Pod or Lambda VM when the model must remain warm continuously and traffic is predictable enough to justify an always-on resource.

Burst traffic and unpredictable demand

Modal and RunPod Serverless are the natural candidates because both can scale GPU workers with demand. Compare worker startup, model-load time, concurrency, and queue behavior using your own request pattern. A VM does not scale itself, so Lambda requires advance capacity planning or an external orchestration layer.

Large parallel batch job

Modal is designed for massively parallel batch jobs and is attractive when tasks are independent and short-lived. RunPod can also handle batch work, particularly when a custom container or persistent dataset is important. Lambda works when the batch is better expressed as a long-running script on a known machine than as thousands of separate tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interactive model development

Choose a RunPod Pod if you want a GPU workstation-like environment with direct control of storage and runtime state. Lambda is a good fit when your team already has Linux VM operating procedures and needs a stable host. Modal’s GPU notebooks and Sandboxes can be faster for lightweight exploration when you do not need unrestricted host administration.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Fine-tuning and long training runs

Use Lambda when an explicit two-, four-, or eight-GPU VM shape and conventional Linux tooling simplify distributed training. RunPod Pods are useful when you need to tune the container, storage, or GPU model yourself. Modal supports training and fine-tuning, and its serverless approach can be compelling for repeatable jobs that start, checkpoint, and terminate automatically.

Custom CUDA or system dependencies

Favor RunPod Pods or Lambda because both expose the environment needed for system packages, compiled extensions, and persistent debugging. Modal can still work when the dependencies can be captured reliably in its code-defined image, but the abstraction leaves fewer host-level controls.

Operational pitfalls and how to avoid them

Cold starts and model loading

Measure the first request separately from warm requests. Keep model initialization outside the request handler where the platform allows it, use an image with dependencies already installed, and set concurrency so one loaded worker can serve multiple requests when memory permits. If startup dominates the workload, a warm Pod or VM may be more appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Idle resources

Set automatic shutdown or an explicit stop procedure for Pods and VMs. Review resource activity after a training run and before weekends. Serverless does not remove all idle costs: warm workers, reserved capacity, and persistent storage can still generate charges.

GPU memory mismatch

Check model weights, activation memory, optimizer state, sequence length, batch size, and framework overhead before selecting a GPU. A model that fits inference may not fit fine-tuning. Leave headroom for concurrent requests or gradient accumulation rather than selecting a card based only on parameter count.

Region shortages

Capacity is not uniform. RunPod advertises 31 regions, while Lambda instances are region-specific and Modal pools capacity across major clouds. Keep a fallback GPU or region, and verify availability immediately before reserving capacity for a deadline-sensitive run.

Architecture and dependency incompatibility

Pin framework, CUDA, Python, and compiled-extension versions in the image. For Lambda’s GH200-based ARM option, verify ARM support before launch. For any provider, run a small end-to-end test that loads the actual model and executes representative kernels.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage and checkpoint loss

Separate ephemeral working space from durable checkpoints. Test restoring a checkpoint on a fresh worker or VM, and document where datasets, logs, and model artifacts reside. A serverless worker’s local filesystem should not be treated as permanent storage unless the provider’s storage configuration explicitly guarantees persistence.

Unobserved scaling

Set maximum workers, request concurrency, queue depth, and retry limits. A malformed request or repeated failure can otherwise create many workers without producing useful output. Track GPU seconds and completed items, not just the number of workers.

A decision checklist

  • Choose Modal if your priority is deploying code-defined GPU functions quickly, scaling with demand, and paying for hosted execution by the second.
  • Choose RunPod Serverless if you want demand-based inference but need a custom worker and more runtime control than a highly abstract platform provides.
  • Choose a RunPod Pod if you need a persistent, interactive GPU environment with direct control over the container, storage, GPU, and runtime.
  • Choose Lambda On-Demand Cloud if your workflow is built around a Linux VM, stable host access, or an explicit multi-GPU training configuration.
  • Before committing, test the real model, measure startup and steady-state throughput, check regional capacity, and include idle time and storage in the cost calculation.

No provider wins every category. The right choice follows from how your workload runs: serverless functions and bursty queues favor Modal; flexible containers and persistent experimentation favor RunPod; provisioned Linux machines and multi-GPU training favor Lambda.
