A mobile payment system is the combination of people and organizations, accounts or payment instruments, communication methods, and processing arrangements that lets someone use a mobile device to initiate or confirm a transfer of value. It can handle purchases from businesses as well as transfers between people. The phone is the access point; it does not necessarily hold or move the money itself.
What is a mobile payment system?
The term describes the wider arrangement that makes a payment possible—not just the phone, app, or wallet. Depending on the service, the arrangement may include a payer, a merchant or recipient, a wallet or bank, a card or payment provider, communications networks, and systems that route, clear, or settle the transaction.
Usage varies by context. Some consumer guidance uses “mobile payment” specifically for purchases made at a physical point of sale. The CFPB’s 2015 report, for example, focused on mobile point-of-sale payments, including digital wallets, card or bank-account access, contactless payments, and QR codes (CFPB report). Broader technical usage also covers remote purchases and person-to-person transfers. ISO’s specifications address mobile payments to businesses and payments between people separately (ISO/TS 12812-5:2017; ISO/TS 12812-4:2017).

- Mobile payment: A transaction or transfer of value initiated or made using a mobile device or wallet. The World Bank and IFC’s terminology includes value sent from a wallet, received into a wallet, or initiated using a mobile phone (World Bank/IFC terminology report).
- Mobile payment system: The participants, rules, instruments, communications, and transaction processes that support one or more kinds of mobile payment. For a country-specific example, Jordan’s central bank describes JoMoPay as an electronic system it operates and oversees for registered participants to exchange financial transactions (Central Bank of Jordan: JoMoPay).
- Mobile wallet: An account or application accessed on a mobile phone that can support payments and potentially other services. The World Bank/IFC defines a mobile wallet as an account accessed using a mobile phone (World Bank/IFC terminology report).
- Mobile banking: Access to a bank account by phone, sometimes with the ability to make transactions. A payment initiated in a banking app is a mobile payment; “mobile banking” describes the access channel, while “payment” describes the transaction.
These distinctions follow the World Bank/IFC terminology report, which dates to 2010 and is useful here for definitions rather than current market figures (World Bank/IFC terminology report).
What kinds of payments can a mobile payment system support?
Mobile payments are not limited to tapping a phone at a checkout. Depending on the service, they can include:

- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
- In-person purchases: A device communicates with a merchant’s point of interaction. NFC contactless is one way to do this.
- QR-code payments: A code is scanned or displayed to convey payment information.
- Remote merchant payments: A mobile app or online checkout sends or confirms a payment instruction through a service or secure server.
- Person-to-person transfers: People send money to one another, including wallet transfers and remittances.
- Bills and other transfers: Depending on the wallet or provider, users may pay bills, buy goods, top up airtime, or repay loans.
ISO’s specifications cover different technologies and distinguish merchant payments from person-to-person payments; neither category depends on one particular phone or wallet brand (ISO/TS 12812-5:2017; ISO/TS 12812-4:2017). ISO reports that Part 5 was reviewed and confirmed in 2025 and remains current.
How does mobile payment work?
The exact process depends on whether the payment uses a bank, card, wallet balance, or another provider-supported source. A generalized transaction usually follows these stages:

- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
- Select the payment method: The payer chooses a linked bank account, card, prepaid or stored-value balance, or another funding source supported by the service.
- Initiate or confirm the instruction: The payer uses the device to enter or approve the payment. The device may convey payment credentials or instructions rather than store the underlying funds.
- Route the transaction: The payment service passes the instruction through the relevant provider, bank, card, wallet, merchant, or other systems.
- Credit the recipient and settle: The recipient is credited, and the transaction is cleared or settled according to that system’s arrangements.
This is a general outline, not a universal technical sequence. ISO describes bank-centric, non-bank-centric, and card-centric implementation models, and the route and settlement process vary by implementation (ISO/TS 12812-5:2017; ISO/TS 12812-4:2017).
Do mobile payments require NFC?
No. NFC supports some close-range, in-person payments, but a mobile payment can also use a QR code or take place remotely through an app or online checkout. A person-to-person transfer may not involve a merchant terminal or an in-person connection at all. NFC is one communication method, not the definition of a mobile payment system.

What should you check about a particular service?
“Mobile payment” identifies a broad category, not a promise about how a specific product works. Before relying on a service, check:
- Which payments it supports: merchant purchases, transfers to people, bill payments, or other uses.
- How the payment is initiated: in person, by QR code, in an app, or through a remote checkout.
- Where the money comes from: a linked card or bank account, stored value, or another supported account.
- Which providers and systems process the payment, and whether it works with other services.
- What authentication, fraud-handling, reversal, fee, and transaction-limit rules apply in your country and with that provider.
Security and consumer protections depend on the service and jurisdiction. Canada’s Financial Consumer Agency warns that mobile devices can expose users to identity fraud and malware, including malicious software targeting financial transactions; its guidance describes risks in the Canadian consumer context (Financial Consumer Agency of Canada: mobile payments). That warning does not establish that every mobile payment is more or less secure than another payment method.
