Mobile Legends: Adventure (MLA) uses five core hero roles: Tank, Support, Mage, Marksman and Fighter. Tanks hold the frontline, Supports heal or enhance allies, Mages deal magic damage, Marksmen deliver sustained ranged physical damage, and Fighters combine melee damage with durability. Since combat is automated, you make the important decisions before a fight: which roles to bring, where to place them, how their abilities complement one another, and which upgrades to prioritize.
This guide covers the idle RPG, not Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, the separate five-versus-five MOBA. Role labels in MLA describe a hero’s team function; faction, type, equipment size, positioning and skill kit are separate characteristics that can be just as important when building a lineup.
The five hero roles in Mobile Legends: Adventure
The game’s Class and Heroes references present five roles. The table below translates each label into the job you should expect that hero to perform in an automated battle.

These are functional categories, not a guarantee that every hero behaves identically. A Tank can offer control, a Support can contribute damage, and a Fighter can be built more offensively or defensively. Read the role as a starting expectation, then check the hero’s skills, statistics, faction and equipment requirements.

What each role does
Tanks: buy time for the team
A Tank is the lineup’s damage sponge. Its job is to stand where enemy attacks are likely to land, survive long enough for allies to use their abilities, and prevent fragile damage dealers from being overwhelmed. Protection can be direct (such as drawing attacks or shielding an ally) or indirect (such as reducing damage and interrupting an attacker).
Place at least one durable hero in the front row when you are learning a stage. If your frontline collapses before your backline can act, adding a second Tank or a durable Fighter may help more than replacing a damage dealer with another fragile attacker. Do not judge a Tank only by personal damage: the time it creates for a Marksman or Mage is part of its value.
Supports: healing, buffs and control
Supports improve the rest of the formation. Depending on the hero, that may mean restoring health, increasing allies’ offensive or defensive performance, removing a harmful effect, or applying crowd control that stops enemies from acting. A Support is often most valuable when its ability directly complements your main damage source.

Keep a Support protected from the first wave of attacks. A healer that survives can recover a damaged frontline; one that is defeated immediately contributes nothing. Some control-oriented Supports may need a different placement so their abilities reach the intended targets, so use the skill description rather than treating “back row” as an unbreakable rule.
Mages: ability-based magic damage
Mages provide magic damage, frequently through area effects that hit several enemies. They are useful when a stage contains clustered opponents or when your formation needs damage that does not rely on repeated basic attacks. Their output is often tied to ability timing, energy and survival, so a Tank or Support that keeps a Mage active can raise total damage more than a second low-durability Mage.

Mages normally belong in the backline. If an enemy can reach that row quickly, use frontline protection, control or a more resilient middle position. Compare a Mage’s actual targeting and area pattern with the enemy arrangement; a theoretical area attack has less value if it rarely reaches multiple targets.
Marksmen: sustained ranged physical damage
Marksmen specialize in repeated ranged physical attacks. They tend to become more valuable in longer fights, where uninterrupted attacking lets their damage accumulate. Their weakness is exposure: they usually have less durability than frontline heroes and need time to work.

If a stage repeatedly defeats your Marksman before it can attack, improve protection or positioning first. Adding another Marksman is not automatically better if both heroes compete for the same safe slot or lack support.
Fighters: durable melee damage
Fighters occupy the space between a Tank and a pure damage dealer. They attack at close range but are built to withstand more punishment than a typical backline attacker. A Fighter can add pressure to an enemy frontline, finish weakened targets, or provide a second body in front of a vulnerable team.
Use the individual skill kit to decide whether a Fighter belongs in the front or middle row. A particularly durable Fighter can share frontline duty with a Tank; a more damage-focused one may need a Tank ahead of it. Fighters are useful when a formation needs more damage without giving up all of its survivability.

Role is only one part of a hero’s identity
MLA references separate role from other hero attributes. Treat these dimensions independently when comparing two candidates:

- Role: the battlefield function described above.
- Faction: a hero’s affiliation, which can contribute to faction bonuses when the lineup meets the relevant requirements.
- Type and equipment size: additional classification and progression information shown on hero listings; these are not alternate names for the five roles.
- Skill kit: exact targets, timing, range, effects and scaling determine how the hero performs in your formation.
- Position: the slot you choose changes who is attacked first and which allies are covered by abilities.
A hero with a theoretically weaker role match can outperform a “perfect” role if its faction bonus and skills fit the rest of your team. Conversely, five heroes with different labels can still fail if they cannot protect one another or their abilities do not function together.
How to build a balanced team
Use this process whenever you create a new lineup or are stuck on a stage. It is designed for automated combat, where you cannot manually rescue a badly configured formation after the battle starts.
- Identify the enemy threat. Note whether the opposing team has heavy frontline pressure, dangerous area damage, fast access to your backline, healing, or crowd control. Your answer determines which role you need most.
- Secure a frontline. Start with one Tank. Add a second Tank or a durable Fighter if your front heroes die before your damage dealers can act.
- Choose a primary damage plan. Select a Mage for magic or area-focused damage, a Marksman for sustained ranged physical damage, or a Fighter for durable melee pressure. You can combine types when the skills and faction bonuses support it.
- Add protection or enablement. Include a Support when healing, buffs or control solve the stage’s main problem. A second damage dealer is less useful if the first one cannot survive long enough to attack.
- Check complementary abilities. Look for effects that reinforce one another: protection that buys time for a channel or attack cycle, control that groups enemies for area damage, or buffs that improve the statistic your main attacker relies on.
- Evaluate faction bonuses. If two heroes perform a similar job, prefer the option that helps your lineup qualify for a useful faction bonus, provided the resulting formation still covers frontline, damage and survival needs.
- Place and test. Put Tanks and suitable Fighters forward, protect backline damage and Supports, then run the automated battle. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the improvement came from role, position, upgrade or synergy.
Positioning: a practical starting formation
The standard starting arrangement is durable heroes in the front row, with damage dealers and Supports in the backline. This is a baseline, not a permanent rule. Enemy targeting and ability ranges can make a different arrangement better.
When the standard arrangement works
Use a Tank in front, a Fighter beside it when additional melee pressure is needed, and place the Mage, Marksman and Support behind them. The frontline receives the opening pressure while the backline has time to build energy and deal damage.

When to move a hero
- If an enemy reaches one backline slot quickly, move the threatened hero behind the sturdier side of your formation or replace that slot with a more durable option.
- If an area attack consistently hits several backline heroes, spread the formation or move one target to a safer position when the available slots allow it.
- If a Support’s heal or buff covers only nearby allies, position the heroes it must affect within that ability’s range.
- If a Fighter has strong durability, move it forward; if it is primarily an attacker, let a Tank absorb the initial hits.
After each change, watch who is defeated first and whether the main damage dealer gets enough uninterrupted attack time. Those observations are more useful than the role label alone.
Comparing the three main damage options
Mage, Marksman and Fighter all deal damage, but they solve different problems. Use the comparison below when deciding what to add after your frontline is stable.

This is a team-building comparison, not a universal ranking. A hero’s exact skills, upgrades and faction interaction decide whether it is the right choice for a particular stage.

In an idle RPG, the battle system handles moment-to-moment actions for you. Preparation therefore carries unusual weight. A balanced set of roles gives the system a chance to execute a coherent plan: the Tank buys time, the Support maintains or enhances the team, and the damage dealers finish the fight.
Upgrade priorities should follow the failure you can observe. If your Tank falls immediately, improve its survivability or add protection before investing only in another attacker. If the team survives but cannot finish enemies, strengthen the primary damage dealer or add a complementary damage type. If battles are lost to disables or recovery, a Support with control, cleansing or healing may be the missing piece.

Make changes incrementally. Replacing several heroes and upgrading all of them at once hides the cause of an improvement or failure. Test the same stage with one role, position or upgrade changed, then keep the version that addresses the actual bottleneck.
Common composition problems and fixes
“My damage dealers die first.”
Move them behind the most durable frontline slot, add a Tank or protective Support, and check whether an enemy bypasses the front row. A second fragile attacker will not solve an access problem.
“The team survives but times out.”
Increase the output of the primary Mage, Marksman or Fighter, remove a redundant defensive slot, or use a Support whose buff directly improves damage. Keep enough durability to survive the opening sequence.
“The frontline survives, but enemies control the team.”
Look for a Support with crowd-control or cleansing utility, reposition heroes to avoid a shared area effect, and consider whether a Fighter can pressure the controller before it acts.
“A role guide lists Assassin as a sixth class.”
The MLA-specific Class and Heroes references identify five roles and omit Assassin. One secondary guide uses Assassin in a broader class list, but it does not establish a version-specific sixth MLA role. Treat Assassin as an unresolved cross-game or secondary-source inconsistency rather than adding it to the core taxonomy.
How many heroes and roles are currently documented?
A community Heroes listing reported 160 heroes meeting its criteria at the time it was crawled. That number is a historical snapshot, not a current roster guarantee; new releases, retirements, filters and page changes can alter it. The stable takeaway is the five-role structure, while the available heroes within each role are volatile.
