Smaller mobile carriers can be a better fit when a national carrier’s bill is too high or its plans include more than you need—but “better” depends on reception where you use your phone, the data you actually get at high speed, and the full recurring cost. Tello, Visible, Mint Mobile, and US Mobile are worth investigating; compare their current terms against your locations, device, and must-have features before switching.
How to choose an alternative carrier
Start with the places and features that matter to you, not a carrier’s headline price or the name of the network it uses. A carrier’s access to a major network does not establish identical coverage, roaming, priority, or performance. Check the selected carrier’s own coverage map for home, work, and regular travel routes, then verify the details that could change your bill or daily use.
- Coverage: Look up your specific locations on the carrier’s map. Maps are planning tools, not guarantees of indoor reception or performance.
- Data: Find the high-speed data allowance and what happens when it is used. “Unlimited” by itself does not tell you whether speeds change after a threshold.
- Total price: Check the recurring rate after any introductory offer, taxes and fees, and whether the quoted price requires paying for several months up front.
- Features: Confirm hotspot, international service, roaming, smartwatch support, and support options if you rely on them. Available evidence does not establish a complete, directly comparable feature list for all four carriers.
- Switching: Confirm your phone is unlocked and compatible, and ask the carrier what information it requires to port your number before you cancel existing service.
What the reviewed plan examples show
The prices below are examples shown on carrier pages retrieved October 7, 2026, except for US Mobile’s dated comparison. They are not a guarantee of current availability or a like-for-like ranking. Check the linked pages for current plan terms before ordering.
| Carrier | Price example | Data or speed detail | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tello | $25 per month for the displayed unlimited plan; $10 per month for a displayed two-GB plan. | The unlimited plan’s Broadband Facts disclosure says 50 GB of high-speed data before throttling. | The disclosure lists $0 early termination, cost recovery of up to 30 cents, and government taxes that vary by location. Prices are page-retrieved examples, not permanent-rate promises. Tello plans and coverage |
| Visible | $25, $35, and $45 per month on the reviewed page. | The page lists unlimited data and separate typical speed ranges for standard LTE/5G service and the 5G Ultra Wideband tier. | Tier speed ranges differ. Promotions shown on the reviewed page had expiry dates that had already passed by the retrieval date, so do not treat them as current offers. Visible plans |
| Mint Mobile | Not established by the reviewed compatibility page. | Not established by that page. | Mint’s compatibility advice is carrier-specific: it says most unlocked phones work when they support 4G LTE/5G and VoLTE, and offers a compatibility check. Check its coverage and the exact plan terms separately. Mint phone compatibility |
| US Mobile | Its August 2026 carrier-authored comparison lists an entry price from $8 per month. | Not established in the cited comparison detail. | The same comparison gives entry-price examples of $10 for Tello, $15 for Mint, and $25 for Visible, and notes that some listed carriers exclude taxes and fees. Treat those figures as a dated commercial comparison, not independent market data; verify final rates with each carrier. US Mobile’s August 2026 comparison |
How to interpret the examples
Tello: a defined high-speed threshold
Tello’s reviewed unlimited-plan disclosure is useful because it states what “unlimited” means for high-speed data: 50 GB before throttling. If you routinely use more than that, ask what the reduced speed supports and whether a different plan better fits your usage. The same page’s two-GB example may suit a light user, but compare its allowance with your monthly usage rather than choosing on price alone.

Visible: compare tiers, not just the entry price
Visible lists three monthly prices and distinct typical speed ranges for standard LTE/5G service and its 5G Ultra Wideband tier. That makes the tier’s network and speed terms relevant to the decision, even though an advertised typical range is not a promise of the speed you will see at a particular address. Check the current plan page and coverage map, and disregard expired promotion text unless the carrier confirms a new offer.
Mint and US Mobile: verify beyond the available examples
The reviewed Mint page helps with device compatibility, not a full assessment of price, data, or features. US Mobile’s comparison supplies dated entry-price leads but is written by a carrier and does not establish an independent comparison or all plan terms. For either provider, use its current plan details and map to confirm what you would actually buy.

Check your phone before you switch
You may be able to keep your current phone, but compatibility is specific to both the device and the carrier. Mint says most unlocked phones work if they support 4G LTE/5G and VoLTE; use Mint’s own check rather than treating that guidance as proof that the same phone works on another provider. Confirm the exact model and its unlocked status with the carrier you select. If it is incompatible, consider a compatible unlocked 5G phone only after confirming the required bands and features with that carrier; a new phone is not automatically necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore porting your number
- Check the carrier’s coverage map. Search home, work, and places you regularly travel. Where possible, test reception before moving your primary number.
- Confirm the plan in writing. Verify high-speed data, post-allowance treatment, hotspot and other required features, recurring price, taxes and fees, and any prepayment term.
- Check device eligibility. Confirm the exact phone is unlocked and supported by the chosen carrier.
- Ask about porting requirements. Get the selected carrier’s current instructions and required account details before starting the transfer.
- Keep old service active until the port completes. Do not cancel the old line first; confirm calls and messages work on the new service after the transfer.
Are there alternatives to Visible that readers like?
Tello, Mint Mobile, and US Mobile are examples to investigate alongside Visible, but one reader discussion asking for alternatives is anecdotal and does not establish which carriers are generally preferred. Use the comparison criteria above to decide which options merit a closer look for your own location and usage.
