The best mobile broadband plan is the one that works where you need it, fits your data use, and costs less over your actual period of use—not necessarily the one with the biggest advertised allowance. Check local 4G or 5G coverage first, then choose between a data SIM, USB dongle, or mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and compare the full plan terms.
Choose the connection format that fits your devices
Mobile broadband uses a data SIM to connect to a mobile network. The plan supplies service; the device provides a way to use it. Buying a dongle or hotspot does not, by itself, include an allowance.
- Data SIM: Use this if your laptop or tablet already has a cellular modem and a compatible SIM slot.
- USB dongle: Connects a computer directly to the mobile network. It suits a single computer that needs its own connection.
- Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot (MiFi): A pocket-sized router with a data SIM that shares its connection over Wi-Fi, useful for several devices or for a laptop without cellular hardware. Three describes its 4G/5G MiFi as a pocket-sized router, while Vodafone distinguishes a computer dongle from a hotspot for multiple devices: Three mobile broadband and Vodafone mobile broadband.
Before buying, check that the device supports the network technology and SIM format offered by the plan.
Check coverage at the places you will use it
National coverage figures are useful context, not a prediction for a particular room, building, or route. Ofcom’s Spring 2026 Connected Nations update, reporting coverage as of January 2026, says good 4G geographic coverage from all mobile network operators reached 84% of UK landmass; predicted 4G coverage from at least one operator reached 96%; and predicted outside-premises 5G coverage ranged from 76% to 94% by operator. - Check the operator’s coverage map and Ofcom’s coverage checker for your home, workplace, and regular travel areas.
- Look specifically for the technology your device supports: 4G, 5G, or both.
- If you can, try a low-commitment SIM or plan before paying for a long contract or a bundled device.
The UK operators have completed their 3G switch-offs, so a 3G-only dongle is not suitable for current service. Ofcom provides information on the switch-off at 3G and 2G switch-off.
Match the plan type to how long you need it
Short-term and longer commitments are both available, but the options vary by provider and product. Three offers no-commitment PAYG data SIMs as well as 1-, 12-, and 24-month mobile broadband plans. Vodafone lists 30-day, 12-month, and 24-month choices; EE publishes mobile broadband plans and separate data SIM and Wi-Fi terms. Check the live offer and the terms for the exact plan before signing up: EE mobile broadband, Three mobile broadband, and Vodafone mobile broadband.

- Intermittent or temporary use: A PAYG or short rolling option may better match a trip, temporary worksite, or backup connection. Check whether packs expire and whether an inactive SIM is eventually deactivated.
- Regular use over many months: A longer plan may bundle a device or offer a different monthly rate, but check the minimum term, cancellation conditions, and any early termination cost.
- Uncertain need: Avoid choosing solely by the advertised monthly price. A lower-commitment option can reduce the risk of paying for months you do not use.
Calculate the total cost, not just the first monthly charge
Compare the cost across the period you realistically expect to use the connection. Include the device upfront payment, every monthly charge, the price after any promotion, scheduled increases, and any out-of-allowance fees or add-ons. For a contract, check the minimum term and what cancellation early would cost.
Price-rise terms are provider- and plan-specific and can change. For example, Vodafone’s page displays 24-month hotspot and dongle plans with scheduled increases in 2027 and 2028; EE says prices increase annually after the minimum term; and Three’s June 2026 price guide says its monthly charge increases by 4.5% each April. Confirm the current terms for the exact offer rather than assuming these examples apply to another plan: Vodafone mobile broadband, EE mobile broadband, and Three mobile broadband price guide.

Estimate data use and understand what happens at the limit
Video calls, streaming, software updates, and multiple connected devices can use data quickly. Estimate your typical monthly use and compare it with the allowance, taking account of how many devices will share the connection. Do not assume an “unlimited” label means unrestricted use: read the fair-use and commercial-use terms.
Before buying, find out what the provider does when the allowance runs out: it may restrict service, offer a paid add-on, charge for extra use, or wait until renewal. These details depend on the plan.

Three’s June 2026 guide lists choices from 2GB through unlimited on selected packages and describes a 1,000GB cap intended to identify commercial use. Its PAYG data-only page says packs are time-limited and an unused SIM is deactivated after 18 months. These are examples of product-specific conditions, not general rules for mobile broadband. Do not assume a domestic allowance works abroad or that every destination is included. Check the plan’s eligible destinations, roaming allowance, and any conditions before travelling. Three’s published terms, for example, say selected allowances permit up to 12GB in listed Go Roam destinations, subject to eligibility and other conditions. That limit is specific to the relevant plans and destinations; it is not a general mobile broadband roaming allowance. See Three’s mobile broadband terms.

Use this checklist before you buy
- Does the network have usable 4G or 5G coverage at the places you need it?
- Do you need a SIM for built-in cellular hardware, a USB dongle for one computer, or a hotspot to connect several devices?
- Does the device support the plan’s network technology and SIM format?
- Is the allowance realistic for your activities and connected devices?
- What happens when you reach the data limit, and what fair-use conditions apply?
- What is the total cost for your expected period of use, including device payments and scheduled increases?
- What are the minimum term, cancellation conditions, and any early termination costs?
- If travelling abroad, are your destinations covered and what roaming allowance applies?
