You can automate a mobile app’s user interface without writing test code by recording a short journey or authoring steps in a low-code interface, then adding checks for the result you expect. You still need an app build, a device or simulator to run it on, and someone to review failures and update tests as the app changes. Start with one important journey—such as signing in and confirming the home screen appears—and expand only after it runs reliably.
What no-code mobile testing does—and does not—mean
No-code describes how you create test steps, not a test that defines itself. A recorder can capture taps and text entry, while some low-code tools let you describe actions in natural language. In either case, you must decide what successful behavior looks like, provide the app to test, choose an execution target, and review the result.
Automated actions alone are not meaningful verification. A test that taps Sign in and stops may pass even if the app displays an error. Add a check for an observable outcome, such as the home screen appearing after sign-in. Tests also need maintenance when screens, labels, or workflows change.

Pick a high-value flow that ends in something a person can verify: sign-in, onboarding, search, or checkout. Keep the first test short. Katalon’s current mobile quick-start guide recommends roughly five to ten actions for an initial journey; a small flow is easier to debug when an app, test, or device causes a failure. #1 Best Overall
- Good first example: enter test credentials, submit the form, and verify that the home screen appears.
- Choose an observable result: verify a screen, message, or other visible state—not merely that a tap occurred.
- Keep the scope narrow: avoid combining several unrelated journeys in one recording.
Pick an authoring approach
Record interactions in the app
A recorder captures actions performed in a real or virtual app session. In Katalon Studio’s documented Smart Mobile Recorder workflow, you start a mobile recording, select a local or cloud device and app, interact with the app, replay the captured steps, correct missed interactions, and save the test. The guide’s header identified Studio 11.6 as the latest stable release when accessed in August 2026; interface details can change between versions. Katalon’s mobile testing quick start
Replay before relying on a recording. Confirm that the steps target the intended controls and that they still work from a clean app state. A recording is a starting point, not proof that the intended behavior is correct.

Author steps in natural language or a visual interface
Some low-code products let you describe actions in natural language and may suggest selectors or test steps with AI assistance. BrowserStack describes natural-language authoring, AI-assisted selectors, cloud authoring, and generated steps for its mobile low-code offering. These are vendor-described capabilities; inspect generated steps and confirm that they interact with the right controls and verify the intended behavior. BrowserStack App Low Code Automation

Turn the actions into a useful test
After capturing or authoring the journey, add a focused verification for its expected outcome. For the sign-in example, check that the home screen is visible after submitting valid credentials. For a negative case, use an invalid credential and verify the error shown to the user.
- Use state-based waits where possible: wait for a screen element or app state rather than inserting an arbitrary fixed delay. Fixed delays can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
- Keep inputs manageable: put credentials or search terms into variables when the tool supports them, rather than embedding changeable values throughout the test.
- Review AI suggestions: confirm the selected test objects and proposed changes, and make sure each check represents user-visible behavior.
- Inspect self-healing suggestions: treat a changed locator or automated diagnosis as a proposal. Compare it with logs, screenshots, and the app’s actual behavior before accepting it.
Prepare the app and choose where to run it
A test needs an app build and a compatible execution target. Katalon’s quick-start guide lists APK or AAB artifacts for Android, IPA for iOS real or cloud devices, and APP for a local iOS simulator. It describes uploading an app for cloud execution or connecting a device, emulator, or simulator for local execution. Confirm the formats accepted by the specific tool and target you select. | Execution option | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Local device, emulator, or simulator | Your team has a prepared environment or wants to run against a device it controls. | Operating-system requirements, device connectivity, app artifact format, and local setup. |
| Hosted real devices | You need cloud execution or access to a broader hosted-device selection. | Actual device and OS catalog, logs and video, parallel execution, privacy terms, and current plan pricing. |
Neither route is automatically cheaper, more secure, or more reliable. Those trade-offs depend on the configuration and the vendor’s current plan and terms. A cloud option can reduce local device setup; local execution gives your team control of the test device.
Run once, inspect failures, then broaden coverage
- Run on one representative device. Use the device and OS version that best reflects your primary test target.
- Review both steps and outcome. Check whether the failure came from an incorrect action, an unmet assertion, the app, or the device environment.
- Use available artifacts. Logs and screenshots can help identify the failure point. BrowserStack describes video recordings, network logs, and Appium logs as debugging aids for its offering. BrowserStack App Low Code Automation
- Establish repeatability before adding devices. Once the test behaves consistently on the first target, try an older OS version and a different screen size. This can reveal layout, keyboard, permission, or timing problems without the noise of a large initial matrix.
If an AI tool proposes a fix or locator change, compare it with the artifacts and the app’s behavior before accepting it. A test that passes after changing what it checks may no longer test the intended user journey.

Choose tools by the job they cover
Compare tools against your app and team’s needs, rather than assuming that “no-code” means the same feature set everywhere. Check platform and app-type support, authoring method, local and cloud execution, device and OS coverage, verification options, debugging artifacts, setup burden, maintenance workflow, and current security and pricing terms.
- Recorder or visual low-code authoring: suited to creating basic UI journeys without writing test code. Check whether it captures interactions accurately, supports explicit assertions, and makes failures reviewable.
- Natural-language authoring: can make step creation more accessible, but generated actions and selectors still need human review.
- Hosted-device execution: consider it when cloud runs or broader device coverage matter. Verify the actual catalog, logs, video, parallel-run limits, privacy terms, and plan pricing.
- Appium: a framework-based, code-oriented route—not a no-code recorder or a complete test runner by itself. Its documentation describes a WebDriver client/server design with platform-specific drivers; teams also need a test runner or framework, and supported commands can differ by platform.
