Onverwacht mobiel dataverbruik kan komen van instellingen die data gebruiken zonder dat je actief streamt of downloadt. Denk aan cellular als aanvulling op zwakke wifi, synchronisatie van foto’s en achtergronddata voor downloads of meldingen. Controleer eerst welke app of systeemdienst data verbruikt en pas daarna de bijbehorende instelling aan. De precieze menunamen verschillen per iOS-versie, Android-versie en fabrikant.
Begin met vaststellen waar het dataverbruik vandaan komt
Een hoge waarde bij een app of systeemdienst is een aanwijzing, geen bewijs dat één verborgen instelling de enige oorzaak is. Vergelijk het overzicht op je telefoon met het verbruik dat je provider rapporteert. Apple zegt dat je provider het nauwkeurigste totaal voor de lopende periode kan geven.
iPhone of iPad
Open Instellingen > Cellular (of Mobiele data) en vergelijk het verbruik per app. Bekijk zo nodig System Services (Systeemvoorzieningen). Je kunt in dit overzicht ook cellular-toegang voor een afzonderlijke app uitschakelen. De precieze benaming kan verschillen; de iPhone-handleiding geldt voor iOS 26 en merkt op dat opties kunnen afhangen van model, provider, regio en softwareversie. Android
Zoek in Instellingen naar Mobile data usage (mobiel datagebruik) of een vergelijkbaar overzicht met appverbruik. Android-menu’s verschillen per versie en fabrikant. Als een beschreven route niet op jouw toestel bestaat, gebruik dan de zoekfunctie in Instellingen of raadpleeg de helptekst van de fabrikant. Google Play Help: achtergronddata beheren.

Welke instellingen kunnen ongemerkt data gebruiken?
iPhone: Connectivity Assist kan cellular gebruiken bij zwakke wifi
Apple’s recente benaming is Connectivity Assist. Die functie gebruikt cellular data wanneer wifi traag of onbruikbaar is. Op recente software staat ze in de wifi-instellingen; oudere apparaten of softwareversies kunnen Wi-Fi Assist tonen onder Cellular/Mobiele data. Apple vermeldt dat Connectivity Assist na de update standaard aanstaat als Wi-Fi Assist daarvoor aanstond. Je kunt de functie uitschakelen of per wifi-router afzonderlijk uitzetten, als je liever data bespaart dan automatisch doorwerkt wanneer wifi hapert. De precieze beschikbaarheid hangt af van apparaat en software. Apple: Connectivity Assist.
iPhone: iCloud Photos kan uploaden en downloaden via cellular
iCloud Photos houdt je foto’s en video’s tussen apparaten gelijk door ze automatisch te uploaden. Als de dienst cellular mag gebruiken, kunnen ook originelen via het mobiele netwerk worden gedownload; Apple waarschuwt dat dit het dataverbruik kan verhogen. Controleer de cellular-toestemming voor Foto’s wanneer je de fotobibliotheek net hebt ingeschakeld of originelen opnieuw worden opgehaald. iPhone: Low Data Mode beperkt achtergrondwerk, maar kan synchronisatie vertragen
Low Data Mode beperkt achtergrondverkeer. Apple noemt onder meer het uitschakelen van Background App Refresh, lagere streamingkwaliteit en het pauzeren van automatische downloads, backups en updates van iCloud Photos. Je kunt de modus afzonderlijk instellen voor cellular en wifi. Schakel hem in als brede beperking passend is, maar houd rekening met minder actuele appgegevens en vertraging van downloads, backups of fotosynchronisatie. Apple beschrijft de functie voor iOS 13 en later; de route verschilt onder meer voor LTE/4G, 5G, dual SIM en wifi. Apple: Low Data Mode gebruiken.

Op Pixel laat Data Saver volgens Google de meeste apps en diensten achtergronddata alleen via wifi gebruiken. Apps die je actief gebruikt, kunnen nog steeds mobiele data gebruiken. Een app met toestemming voor Unrestricted data kan cellular blijven gebruiken wanneer Data Saver aanstaat. “Unrestricted” betekent hier dat de app de Data Saver-beperking mag passeren, niet dat je databundel onbeperkt is. Controleer uitzonderingen als een app ondanks Data Saver veel data blijft gebruiken. De instructies zijn Pixel-specifiek; aangepaste Android-versies kunnen andere stappen hebben. Android: achtergronddata kan downloads en meldingen leveren
Achtergronddata stelt apps in staat informatie op te halen voor later gebruik of meldingen te bezorgen wanneer de app niet openstaat. De Google Play Store kan een uitzondering op Data Saver krijgen. Controleer bij een opvallende verbruiker of achtergronddata is toegestaan en of de app een uitzondering heeft. De instelling kan op verschillende Android-versies op een andere plek staan. Videogesprekken: controleer ook instellingen in de app zelf
Sommige apps hebben eigen opties voor databesparing. Google Meet heeft bijvoorbeeld op Android een instelling om datagebruik te beperken. Dit is een app-specifieke mogelijkheid, geen algemene Android-instelling die in elke app bestaat. Google Meet: datagebruik beperken.

Pas instellingen gericht aan
iPhone of iPad
- Open Instellingen > Cellular of Mobiele data, vergelijk appverbruik en bekijk zo nodig System Services. Controleer het totaal ook bij je provider.
- Zoek in de wifi-instellingen naar Connectivity Assist. Op oudere software kan Wi-Fi Assist onder Cellular/Mobiele data staan. Zet de functie alleen uit als je het gebruik van cellular bij zwakke wifi wilt voorkomen.
- Controleer of Foto’s cellular data mag gebruiken en of een grote bibliotheek synchroniseert of originelen opnieuw ophaalt.
- Schakel Low Data Mode in als je achtergrondverkeer breder wilt beperken en vertraging van automatische taken acceptabel vindt.
Android
- Zoek in Instellingen naar mobiel datagebruik en bekijk welke apps bovenaan staan.
- Schakel Data Saver in als je achtergronddata wilt beperken. Controleer ook de lijst met apps die Unrestricted data mogen gebruiken.
- Open de instellingen van een opvallende app en controleer of achtergronddata is toegestaan.
- Controleer voor videogesprekken of de app zelf een optie voor databesparing heeft; Google Meet op Android is een concreet voorbeeld.
