MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service: a standardized, non-real-time messaging service for sending and receiving messages that combine text with media such as images, audio, or video. Unlike a live call, an MMS is sent as a message that the recipient can receive and view later.
What does MMS mean?
MMS is short for Multimedia Messaging Service. NIST defines it as an accepted messaging standard for sending and receiving messages formatted with text, graphics, photographs, audio, and video clips. NIST’s MMS glossary attributes the definition to NIST publications including SP 800-101 Rev. 1 and NISTIR 7250 and 7387.
MMS is a service framework, not the name of one particular phone app. 3GPP describes it as non-real-time messaging: it is not a live voice or video call. The applicable requirements and technical descriptions are documented in 3GPP specifications, including TS 22.140 and TS 23.140.
What can an MMS contain?
An MMS can combine text and supported media in one message. That might mean a caption with a photo, or a message that bundles more than one media item. 3GPP’s media specification describes combining multiple elements into a composite message using MIME multipart formatting. TS 26.140 specifies media formats and codecs; the practical formats available depend on implementation.

How is MMS different from SMS?
SMS means Short Message Service and is primarily associated with text messages. MMS extends messaging to support multimedia content, including images, audio, and video. That distinction describes the services broadly; it does not mean every phone or carrier handles the same formats or features.
Do MMS formats and limits work the same everywhere?
No universal current file-size cap or identical set of supported formats is established here. Practical limits and media compatibility depend on the applicable standards, devices, and carrier implementations. The 3GPP work item record describes the standards history and service scope, but it should not be read as a promise that every present-day carrier supports the same features. See 3GPP’s MMS work item record for that historical standards context.
