Which MMOs are still active in 2026? Final Fantasy XIV, The Elder Scrolls Online, and RuneScape all have official evidence of substantial updates and community-facing activity this year. That makes them useful examples of thriving games—but updates and events are not independently verified player counts, and they do not establish which MMO has the largest population.
What “thriving” means here
For this snapshot, “thriving” describes visible ongoing support: released content, system improvements, seasonal events, and community activities. It is not a live population ranking. The official announcements below show that these games continued to receive attention in 2026; they cannot tell you how many people are playing at this moment.
Which MMOs are still getting regular updates?
Final Fantasy XIV: new systems and a broad free-trial path
Square Enix’s official Patch 7.5 notes describe regional matchmaking across worlds within a region, additional Duty Support, and a housing update. The patch also expanded the Starter Edition and free trial to include A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers, with progression up to level 80. Trial terms and restrictions still apply; the expansion list and level cap describe the announced scope, not every feature available to paid accounts.

Community activity was visible beyond patch releases. On August 24, 2026, the official community blog announced The Rising, a seasonal quest and rewards event for the game’s thirteenth anniversary. It ran from August 27 through September 10, 2026, so it is a past event as of October 2026—not a currently available activity.

The Elder Scrolls Online: a season-based structure
Bethesda’s Season Zero announcement set out a new season-based content structure. Season Zero ran from April 2 through July 8, 2026, and included player-facing improvements, class and combat redesigns, zones, and challenges. Those dates have passed, so these are delivered historical updates rather than a description of a live event.
Bethesda said gameplay features, systems, and improvements were free for current ESO players, with exceptions involving premium Tamriel Tome options and ESO Plus additions. Check the official announcement for the boundaries of those exceptions; “free improvements” does not mean every optional or subscription benefit is included.

RuneScape: shipped expansion content alongside a roadmap
Jagex’s 2026 announcements cover both completed content and plans. The distinction matters: Havenhythe part one was released, while systems modernization, an avatar refresh, Leagues II, and RuneFest appeared as items in the broader 2026 roadmap and should not all be treated as shipped game updates.
In its March 23, 2026 Havenhythe part one announcement, Jagex described new quests, two bosses, fish farming, and Hunter content with a level-cap increase to 110. It also says RuneScape is available on PC and mobile with cross-platform progression.

- Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
Jagex reported that nearly 125,000 players voted in November 2025 on the future of RuneScape’s Treasure Hunter daily activity mechanic, which the company says was subsequently removed. That is evidence of participation in a particular vote, not a measure of current active users. Likewise, Jagex’s figure of over 300 million welcomed player accounts is cumulative, not a current population count. Its announced RuneFest capacity of 6,000 attendees is planned capacity, not confirmed attendance.

| Game | Documented 2026 activity | Access or platform detail in the announcements | Best fit to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy XIV | Patch 7.5 systems and access changes; an anniversary seasonal event | Free trial and Starter Edition scope announced through Shadowbringers, up to level 80 | Players drawn to story, group duties, and a free-trial route |
| The Elder Scrolls Online | Season Zero improvements, class and combat redesigns, zones, and challenges | Core gameplay features, systems, and improvements were described as free for current players, subject to premium Tamriel Tome and ESO Plus exceptions | Players interested in a season-based structure and Elder Scrolls setting |
| RuneScape | Released Havenhythe part one, alongside separate roadmap items | PC and mobile availability with cross-platform progression, according to Jagex | Players looking for quests, bosses, skilling content, and play across PC and mobile |
Choose based on the play style you want, the access model you are comfortable with, and the platform you use. For population claims, look for comparable, dated player-count data; anniversary events, roadmaps, account totals, and votes are not substitutes.
