An AI-assisted workflow reportedly deciphered a French military message from 1809 in about six hours, solving a code that had resisted readers for roughly 217 years. AI engineer Carter Church used a single image and prompt with GPT-6 Astra, then combined a partial key with a simulated-annealing search. Cryptiana maintainer Satoshi Tomokiyo reviewed the result and marked the historical-cipher entry solved.
What was decoded
The artifact is not a newly discovered letter written directly by Napoleon Bonaparte. It was a military message sent on Napoleon’s orders through Eugène de Beauharnais, Napoleon’s stepson and viceroy of Italy, from his headquarters to French General Auguste de Marmont. The message concerned the positions of French and allied armies before the 1809 Austrian campaign.
The document had remained unread for approximately 217 years. It was designed for carriage by a trusted officer and encrypted to reduce the risk of interception.

How the reported AI solve worked
1. Selecting an unsolved cipher
Church chose an unresolved historical cipher listed in the Cryptiana database. The page included a French line followed by 24 rows containing numbers, letters and invented symbols.

2. Converting the image into usable symbols
Reports describe the page as containing about 1,300 cipher units and 155 distinct signs. GPT-6 Astra was given one image and one prompt to transcribe and analyze the material. That transcription step matters: a wrong symbol, missing mark or merged character can invalidate every later substitution.
3. Combining a partial key with automated search
The model used a previously known portion of the key, then searched the remaining substitutions with a simulated-annealing solver. Simulated annealing explores many candidate keys while occasionally accepting a less promising move, helping the search escape local dead ends before converging on a stronger result.

4. Producing a testable reading
The reported output was a coherent French plaintext plus a solution package capable of regenerating and testing the reading against the original ciphertext. Church said the end-to-end workflow took roughly six hours.
What the message reportedly says
The plaintext concerns army positions ahead of the Austrian campaign. Church’s account also says the decipherment fills a gap in Napoleon’s later memoir, completing a phrase as “a gathering of rabble.” That wording should be treated as a reported reconstruction, not as an independently verified archival translation.

Why mechanical verification matters
A plausible sentence is not enough to prove a classical cipher has been solved. A solver must show that the key maps the actual symbols consistently, reproduces the ciphertext and yields the same plaintext when another person runs the procedure.
Church described this distinction to Live Science: “The verifiability of solutions is actually the most difficult part, far more difficult than generating potential solutions.” He also argued that an incorrect key is extremely unlikely to produce output that is both coherent and historically consistent when the result can be mechanically checked.

Tomokiyo reviewed Church’s work and changed the Cryptiana entry’s status to solved. That is meaningful expert review, but the available reporting does not establish a peer-reviewed replication, an independently published error rate or a controlled benchmark against specialist human cryptanalysts.

Does this mean AI replaces historical codebreakers?
No. The case shows how AI can compress transcription, hypothesis generation and search, but it does not remove the need for historical and cryptographic judgment.

- Provenance: Researchers must establish where a document came from, who sent it and whether the surviving image is complete.
- Key validation: The proposed key must account for every relevant symbol and reproduce the encrypted text without ad hoc exceptions.
- Language review: Specialists need to distinguish grammatical French from a forced reading that merely resembles it.
- Historical fit: The plaintext should agree with dates, people, troop movements and documentary context without being made to fit them.
- Reproducibility: Other investigators need the image, transcription, key, code and instructions required to rerun the solve.
Human experts also remain important when a cipher has little known plaintext, no partial key and no comparable examples in training data. The reports explicitly caution that harder historical systems may remain unsolved.
Why Tomokiyo called it a turning point
AFP quoted Tomokiyo saying, “2026 will be remembered as a turning point for codebreaking of historical ciphers.” He also expressed ambivalence: “I’m excited long-time problems are now solved, but on the other hand, I have mixed feelings, because AI seems to have solved these difficult problems so easily.”
That reaction captures the change in the field. Historical cipher work has often depended on scholars and dedicated hobbyists willing to spend months or years transcribing symbols and testing substitutions. An AI system can reduce that persistence burden, but faster candidate generation makes transparent checking more important, not less.

What is still unknown
Current accounts do not independently establish the original French military codebook, a peer-reviewed replication, a measured error rate or a fair speed-and-accuracy comparison with expert human cryptanalysts. The strongest public confirmation is Tomokiyo’s review, Cryptiana’s solved status and the claim that the key and plaintext can be mechanically tested.
Accordingly, the episode is best understood as a documented, testable AI-assisted decipherment—not proof that every centuries-old cipher is now easy or that historical cryptography no longer needs human oversight.
