Mitsuna Kawai photographed the ribbonfish with a Canon R10 (also identified in coverage as the Canon EOS R10), paired with an Ikelite underwater housing and Ikelite DS160II strobe. DPReview identifies the lens as a Canon RF-S 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM, used at 18mm. The image won first place in the Ocean Photographer of the Year 2026 category The Ocean Unseen: Hidden Worlds—not the overall competition.
What camera did Mitsuna Kawai use?
The official Ocean Photographer of the Year winners gallery lists a Canon R10, an Ikelite housing and an Ikelite DS160II strobe. DPReview’s finalist coverage names the camera as the Canon EOS R10 and supplies the lens detail. These sources identify the same camera; the official gallery uses the shorter “Canon R10” name.
| Part of setup | Published detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | Canon R10 / Canon EOS R10 | Official winners gallery; DPReview |
| Lens | Canon RF-S 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM, set to 18mm | DPReview |
| Underwater housing | Ikelite housing; the gallery does not state a model | Official winners gallery |
| Strobe | Ikelite DS160II | Official winners gallery |
| Exposure | ISO 200, f/9, 1/160s | Official winners gallery |
The photograph’s published equipment record is a complete underwater system, not just a camera-body choice. The housing makes the camera usable underwater, while the listed strobe is part of the lighting setup. The sources do not name the housing model, so a more specific model should not be inferred.
Why use a zoom lens underwater?
Digital Camera World reports the lens was set to its widest 18mm, equivalent to 29mm on a full-frame camera, and argues that a zoom is practical underwater because a photographer cannot change lenses inside a housing during an encounter. That is the publication’s explanation of the choice, not a stated explanation from Kawai herself. A zoom can offer framing flexibility without opening the housing, but this account does not establish that it is the best lens for every underwater subject or diver.

What is the fish in the image, and where was it taken?
The official gallery caption identifies the subject as a ribbonfish rising vertically among salps in dark water at Osezaki, Japan. It describes the photograph as made on a winter blackwater dive. Can you use the same settings to recreate the photograph?
The official gallery records ISO 200, f/9 and a shutter speed of 1/160s for this image. Treat these as the exposure settings attached to Kawai’s photograph, not a universal recipe: underwater light, subject distance, movement, strobe position and water conditions all affect exposure. The published settings alone do not explain the full lighting or focusing technique.

Digital Camera World reported that the 2026 competition received more than 15,000 entries; that figure is attributable to the publication, rather than independently confirmed here by the organizer. DPReview quotes Ocean Photographer of the Year founder and director Will Harrison: “These photographs don’t just capture what’s beneath the surface; they surface the stories our planet most needs us to hear.”
