The Mitsubishi Electric MA-E85R-A, also called the E85R or ElitePure, is a large-room air purifier with manufacturer-rated CADR of 508 m³/h and an optimum room area of 60 m². Its standout ownership feature is an automatically cleaned pre-filter; its main trade-offs are that the performance figures are manufacturer specifications rather than independent test results, and the model is marked discontinued in New Zealand.
What the MA-E85R-A offers
Mitsubishi Electric Australia’s 2023 brochure lists 510 m³/h air volume, 508 m³/h clean air delivery rate (CADR), and a 60 m² optimum room size. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. The room-area figure is a comparison point, not a guarantee of equivalent cleaning in every room: results depend on the room and operating conditions, and coverage figures are most useful when compared using the same method.
The brochure describes a PM2.5 sensor that detects particles as small as 0.5 μm, an odor sensor, and “Smart Search,” in which the sensors scan for airborne allergens and pollutants. The manual also describes a louvre that moves through five stages to search for airborne contamination. These are descriptions of the product’s sensing and airflow features, not independent evidence of pollutant removal in a particular home. - Automatically cleaned pre-filter: A mechanism sweeps dust from the pre-filter into a dust box, reducing the need to remove dust from the filter by hand.
- Two-layer HEPA filter: Mitsubishi says the filter has 3.38 m² of media and captures up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 μm. This is the manufacturer’s claim, not a verified whole-room or independent test result.
- Activated carbon filter: The brochure describes a washable 500 g filter that catches some harmful gases and unpleasant odors. “Some” is important: the claim does not establish removal of all gases or odors.
- Platinum catalyst filter: A further washable stage, described by Mitsubishi as a platinum catalyst filter.
The brochure’s capture percentage and filter descriptions should be read as manufacturer claims about the stated filter and conditions, not as a guarantee of health outcomes or universal pollutant removal. Mitsubishi Electric Australia’s brochure is the source for these figures and descriptions.

How often do the filters and dust box need attention?
Dust box and sensors
The manual says to empty or clean the dust box when its indicator lights, or approximately every four months. It lists sensor cleaning at approximately monthly intervals and provides other periodic cleaning instructions. Use the manual’s procedure, including its power-disconnection safety steps, rather than improvising a cleaning method.
HEPA and activated carbon filters
The replacement-filter indicator is described as illuminating after approximately eight years in Silent manual operation or approximately 1.6 years in Turbo manual operation. These are approximate manufacturer guidance intervals; the manual cautions that service life varies with environment and use. It says to replace the HEPA and activated carbon filters together, and notes that the HEPA filter cannot be washed and reused.

The replacement set identified in the manual is MAPR-866HFT. Check that any seller’s listing explicitly matches the MA-E85R-A and your market before ordering; the manual establishes the part identity, but not a seller’s current stock or listing accuracy. Mitsubishi Electric New Zealand’s parts shop lists pre-filter M25274349P for the MA-E85R-A (2022). That listing says to wash it in water only, without detergent, and dry it before reinstalling. Confirm that the part is appropriate for your unit and available in your location through the New Zealand parts listing.

Is the Mitsubishi E85R discontinued?
Mitsubishi Electric New Zealand labels the MA-E85R-A discontinued. That establishes its status in that market, not a worldwide end to sales. Availability can vary by country and seller, so check local listings and support before deciding whether to buy the purifier or replacement parts.
