Ordinary human tissues use mitosis. Skin, liver, intestinal lining, muscle-supporting tissues and other somatic (body) tissues use mitotic division when they make replacement cells, grow or repair damage. Meiosis is restricted to germ-cell lineages in the reproductive organs, where it produces haploid sperm or eggs for sexual reproduction.
A mitotic division normally produces two genetically similar diploid daughter cells. Meiosis involves two successive divisions after one round of DNA replication and produces four genetically varied haploid cells. In humans, that means maintaining 46 chromosomes in ordinary body cells while reducing gametes to 23.
The direct answer: body tissues use mitosis
When a question asks which type of cell division occurs in body cells, the answer is mitosis. Somatic cells form the tissues that make up the body, and mitosis preserves the chromosome number and general genetic identity of those tissues as cells are added or replaced.

Meiosis does not normally occur in skin, liver, muscle, nerve or other ordinary tissue cells. It occurs in specialized germ-cell lineages in the ovaries and testes. Those precursor cells undergo meiosis to make eggs or sperm, the cells that carry one chromosome set into sexual reproduction.

This is a rule about the cell’s lineage and function, not a claim that every mature tissue cell is dividing at every moment. Many differentiated cells pause division or remain in a nondividing state after they have reached their specialized role.
Somatic cells and germ cells are different lineages
Somatic cells build ordinary tissues
Somatic means “body.” A somatic cell belongs to the body-cell lineages that form organs and tissues rather than the reproductive-cell lineage. When a somatic cell divides for growth, routine maintenance or repair, it uses mitosis. The division copies the cell’s genetic material and distributes one complete chromosome set to each daughter cell.
Human somatic cells are generally diploid: they have two sets of chromosomes, one inherited from each parent. The usual count is 46 chromosomes in each nucleus, arranged as 23 pairs. Mitosis maintains that diploid state in the daughter cells.
Germ-cell lineages make gametes
Germ cells are the reproductive lineage. Their descendants in the ovaries or testes eventually enter meiosis and become gametes: eggs or sperm. A gamete is haploid, with one chromosome set. Human eggs and sperm normally contain 23 chromosomes.
Keeping gametes haploid is essential. At fertilization, an egg and sperm combine their 23 chromosomes, restoring the diploid total of 46 in the first cell of a new organism. If gametes retained 46 chromosomes, chromosome number would double at every generation.
Mitosis and meiosis compared
| Feature | Mitosis | Meiosis |
|---|---|---|
| Where it occurs | Somatic or body-cell lineages in tissues | Germ-cell lineages in reproductive organs |
| DNA replication | One DNA-replication phase before division | One DNA-replication phase followed by two divisions |
| Number of divisions | One | Two successive divisions: meiosis I and meiosis II |
| Typical products | Two daughter cells | Four daughter cells that can develop into gametes |
| Chromosome state in humans | Diploid is maintained: generally 46 chromosomes | Haploid cells are produced: generally 23 chromosomes |
| Genetic relationship | Daughters are usually genetically very similar to the parent and to one another | Products are genetically varied because of chromosome assortment and crossing over |
| Main biological role | Growth, cell replacement and tissue repair | Sexual reproduction and generation of genetic variation |
The table describes the typical outcome. Actual tissues can contain cells that are temporarily paused, terminally differentiated or otherwise not progressing through a division cycle at a particular time.
How a mitotic division makes new tissue cells
1. DNA is copied before the chromosome sets separate
Before mitosis, the cell passes through interphase. During its DNA-replication phase, each chromosome is copied so that it consists of two sister chromatids joined at a central region. The cell also grows and checks whether conditions are suitable for division.

2. One division separates sister chromatids
Mitosis is one nuclear division. The duplicated chromosomes are organized and then the sister chromatids are pulled to opposite sides of the cell. Each side receives one copy of every chromosome. This is how a complete diploid set can be delivered to both future daughter cells.
3. Cytokinesis produces two cells
After the chromosomes have segregated, cytokinesis divides the cell’s cytoplasm. The result is normally two daughter cells, each with a nucleus containing 46 chromosomes in humans. Their DNA is ordinarily the same as the parent cell’s DNA apart from any copying changes or mutations that may have occurred.
These daughter cells can remain in the tissue, differentiate into a specialized cell type, or later divide again if the tissue requires more cells. Repeated mitotic cycles allow a tissue to expand during development and replace cells lost through normal wear or injury.
How meiosis makes haploid reproductive cells
One replication, then two divisions
Meiosis begins with DNA replication during interphase, just as mitosis does. The crucial difference is that the replicated chromosomes then pass through two nuclear divisions without another round of DNA replication between them.
Meiosis I separates homologous chromosomes
In prophase I, matching maternal and paternal chromosomes—called homologous chromosomes—pair with one another. They can exchange corresponding DNA segments in a process called crossing over or recombination. This reshuffling creates chromosome combinations that were not present as intact combinations in either parent.
During meiosis I, homologous chromosomes separate into different cells. Sister chromatids remain together at this stage. Because each resulting cell receives only one chromosome from each homologous pair, the chromosome sets have been reduced toward the haploid state.
Meiosis II separates sister chromatids
Meiosis II resembles a mitotic separation of sister chromatids, but it starts with cells that already have one chromosome from each homologous pair. The sister chromatids move apart, and cytokinesis ultimately produces four cells.

Why mitosis preserves tissue continuity
Tissues need a dependable way to add cells without changing their basic chromosome complement. Mitosis supplies that continuity: one parent cell gives rise to two daughters with the same general chromosome number and a closely matching genome. That makes it suitable for replacing an intestinal lining cell, expanding tissue during growth or closing a wound.
Genetic similarity does not mean that mitotic daughters can never differ. DNA-copying errors, environmental damage and changes in gene regulation can create differences. The defining point is that mitosis does not intentionally halve chromosome number or reshuffle homologous chromosomes as meiosis does.
Why meiosis must create variation and halve chromosome number
Sexual reproduction requires two parental contributions. Meiosis prepares each contribution by making haploid cells and by generating multiple chromosome combinations. Two mechanisms are especially important:
- Independent assortment: homologous chromosome pairs orient and separate in combinations, so each product receives a different mix of maternal and paternal chromosomes.
- Crossing over: paired homologous chromosomes exchange DNA segments during prophase I, creating chromosomes with new combinations of variants.
Fertilization then combines one haploid gamete from each parent. The resulting diploid cell has 46 chromosomes, but its particular combination is new. That outcome is useful for population-level genetic variation, whereas it would be disruptive if used to replace every cell in a person’s skin or liver.
How often do tissues actually divide?
“Tissues use mitosis” describes the division mechanism available to somatic lineages, not a schedule that applies uniformly to every organ. Cell turnover depends on the tissue’s job, its stem or progenitor cells, injury and signals from neighboring cells.
Fast replacement: the stomach lining
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences reported in 2021 that cells lining the stomach may be replaced after only a few days. The lining faces harsh chemical and mechanical conditions, so rapid mitotic production helps maintain its protective barrier.

Slower replacement: liver tissue
Liver-cell replacement can take much longer. The same NIGMS explanation states that liver cells may wait up to a year before being replaced. “Uses mitosis” therefore does not mean that a liver cell divides daily; it means that when replacement occurs, the relevant somatic proliferation is mitotic.
Cells that may not divide again
Some nerve cells and eye-lens cells may not divide again after differentiation, according to NIGMS. They can remain functional for long periods without producing a daughter cell. Their lack of current division does not turn them into meiotic cells; meiosis remains a reproductive-lineage process.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does meiosis happen in normal tissue cells?
No. Normal skin, liver, muscle and nerve tissue do not use meiosis to make replacement cells. Meiosis is carried out by germ-cell precursors in the reproductive organs. A developing sperm or egg is the relevant endpoint, not a new skin cell or a repaired section of liver.
It is useful to separate two ideas that are often blended together:
- Cell type: a somatic cell belongs to an ordinary body tissue; a germ-line cell belongs to the reproductive lineage.
- Cell-cycle activity: a somatic cell may be actively dividing, temporarily paused or permanently nondividing.
Only the first distinction determines whether meiosis is the appropriate process. A nondividing neuron is still a somatic cell, and a germ-cell precursor is still on the reproductive pathway even before it completes meiosis.

“All body cells divide by mitosis.”
This is too absolute. Somatic cells that proliferate use mitosis, but some mature cells are quiescent or do not divide again. A precise statement is: Somatic cell proliferation in ordinary tissues occurs by mitosis.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Meiosis makes four eggs or four sperm in every case.”
Meiosis produces four haploid products as a basic division outcome. Their later development is not identical in the two sexes, and the products may not all become mature, functional gametes. The safe comparison is that meiosis has two divisions and yields four haploid daughter cells in the standard description.

“Mitosis makes genetically identical cells.”
Textbooks often use “genetically identical” as shorthand. In practice, the daughters are expected to be genetically similar because they receive copied chromosomes; rare replication errors or mutations can create differences. Meiosis, by contrast, actively generates variation through assortment and recombination.
“Meiosis is just mitosis twice.”
The two processes share chromosome-copying and separation machinery, but meiosis I has a distinctive pairing and separation of homologous chromosomes. Meiosis also includes recombination and occurs after only one DNA replication, followed by two divisions. Those features make its outcome fundamentally different from repeating mitosis.
A practical way to identify the process
When you encounter a cell-division example, use this sequence:
- Identify the lineage. If the cell belongs to skin, gut, liver, muscle, nerve or another ordinary body tissue, classify it as somatic. If it is on the pathway to sperm or eggs, classify it as germ-line.
- Ask what the division is for. Growth, routine replacement and repair point to mitosis. Preparing cells for sexual reproduction points to meiosis.
- Check the chromosome outcome. Two cells retaining the diploid number indicate mitosis. Four cells with half the chromosome number indicate meiosis.
- Look for homolog pairing and recombination. Pairing of homologous chromosomes and crossing over are characteristic of meiosis I, not ordinary mitosis.
- Account for nondividing cells. If a mature cell is not currently dividing, do not infer that it uses meiosis. It may simply be quiescent or terminally differentiated.
What the chromosome numbers mean in humans
The familiar human counts are a compact way to remember the distinction:
- Most human somatic cells are diploid with 46 chromosomes.
- Meiosis produces haploid sperm or eggs with 23 chromosomes.
- Fertilization combines two haploid sets and restores 46 chromosomes in the new diploid cell.
These are typical counts for humans, not a universal rule for every species. The underlying principle—mitosis maintains a cell’s chromosome state while meiosis reduces it for sexual reproduction—applies more broadly.
What authoritative references say
MedlinePlus Genetics from the U.S. National Library of Medicine explains that when people refer to “cell division,” they most often mean mitosis, the process of making new body cells. Its 2021 material gives the standard human counts of 46 chromosomes in body cells and 23 in gametes.
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences, in a 2021 explanation of cell turnover, uses examples ranging from stomach-lining replacement after a few days to liver-cell replacement that may take up to a year, while noting that some nerve and eye-lens cells may not divide again.
The National Human Genome Research Institute glossary, updated in 2026, defines meiosis as a division process in sexually reproducing organisms that reduces chromosome number in gametes. Its standard account describes two meiotic divisions that produce four haploid daughter cells.
Together, these references support the concise answer: mitosis serves proliferating body tissues; meiosis serves the germ-cell pathway that makes gametes.
