Mistral Shieldstral 1.0 is an open-weight moderation classifier that evaluates text, images, or text-and-image content against a natural-language policy. Mistral’s model card says BF16 deployment with vLLM fits within 16GB of VRAM; its cookbook separately documents a Transformers example running with about 8GB. Those are configuration claims from Mistral, not independent hardware tests. Shieldstral’s flexible policy interface is its standout feature, but its published benchmark results vary by task, so it should be validated on the content and rules you actually need to moderate.
What Shieldstral does
Shieldstral turns a moderation rule into a yes-or-no classification question. You provide instructions that define the evaluation context and strictness, ask one policy question, and supply the material to assess. That material can be a prompt, a response, a prompt-response pair, an image, or an image with accompanying text. The model returns a yes/no token; a score can be derived from the relative probabilities of those answers.
For example, a moderation system might ask, “Does this content promote violence against a protected group?” or, for an image, “Is this image safe to show to a minor?” A separate query can ask whether an assistant refused a request. Mistral describes the approach in its Shieldstral announcement and gives the prompt structure in the model card.

One policy question at a time
The model card recommends one policy per query when you need separate decisions—for example, distinct results for harassment and sexual content. A broad safe/unsafe question can combine categories in its instructions, but it does not give you independently labeled outcomes for each category. If downstream actions depend on which rule was triggered, ask separate questions or carefully validate a broader policy design.

Model size, license, and availability
Mistral presents Shieldstral as a 3B model, while the specification table on its official model page lists 3.8 billion parameters. The weights are published under the Apache 2.0 license, and Mistral labels the release a public preview. The official model documentation describes its supported moderation tasks.
Shieldstral is designed for self-hosting rather than use through a Mistral-hosted inference endpoint. Mistral’s cookbook states that there is no Mistral API endpoint for the model and documents local Transformers and vLLM workflows. The model card also lists llama.cpp and SGLang among supported runtimes. Runtime support does not by itself establish equivalent performance or configuration across those options.
Can Shieldstral run on a single 16GB GPU?
According to Mistral’s model card, a BF16 vLLM deployment fits within 16GB of VRAM. The card recommends vLLM and gives this serving command:

vllm serve mistralai/Shieldstral-1.0-3B --max-model-len 32768Mistral’s cookbook describes a separate Transformers example that runs on a single GPU with about 8GB of VRAM and lists at least 8GB or a Colab T4/A100 as a GPU prerequisite. The 8GB example and 16GB BF16 vLLM claim refer to different documented configurations; neither is a guarantee for every serving setup, input length, or workload. Mistral does not provide an independently verified hardware measurement, GPU-specific throughput, latency, or power figures in these materials. Consult the policy moderation cookbook and model card when choosing a runtime and sizing a deployment.
How to interpret the model’s scores
Mistral’s examples use 0.5 as a default threshold for turning the yes/no score into a decision. That is an example, not a universally validated cutoff. A false positive can block acceptable content; a false negative can let prohibited content through. Choose a threshold using representative examples from your own application, measure both kinds of error, and set the cutoff according to the consequences of each.
The model card reports F1 scores across different benchmark tasks. The table below gives selected comparisons that illustrate why results should be read by task rather than reduced to one overall winner. These are publisher-reported results, not independently reproduced tests.

Across aggregates, Mistral’s 2026 technical report reports 84.9% average F1 on text safety benchmarks, 83.8% on multimodal safety benchmarks, and 91.3% on a fine-grained policy-adaptability evaluation. It also reports approximately 54.1 million curated or generated samples. These are figures from the publisher’s report, not independent evaluations; aggregate scores do not predict results on a particular organization’s policies or data. Languages, images, and context limits
The model card names 12 supported languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and Russian. That list does not establish equal accuracy across languages, dialects, or types of content. The model is built on Ministral-3-3B-Base-2512 and uses a native Pixtral vision encoder, enabling image moderation as well as text classification.
Mistral says training sequences reached 32,000 tokens. Although the card describes 256,000-token context as theoretically supported, it recommends staying within the 32,000-token training range. Mistral also identifies multilingual coverage, longer-document robustness, and broader multimodal safety as ongoing work in its announcement. A supported language or modality is not a guarantee of reliable decisions for every input in that category.

What to test before using it in production
Shieldstral’s natural-language policy interface makes it adaptable, but the model’s benchmark scores cannot replace an evaluation of your own moderation rules. Before routing real content through it, test a representative, appropriately governed dataset and check:
- Policy fit: Write clear rules and examples, then verify that the model’s decisions match the actions your application will take.
- Per-policy errors: Measure false positives and false negatives for each rule, rather than relying only on an overall accuracy or F1 figure.
- Threshold choice: Compare candidate cutoffs against the cost of blocking acceptable content versus allowing prohibited content.
- Coverage: Include the languages, dialects, image types, and document lengths that occur in your service.
- Serving behavior: Validate memory use and operational performance with your chosen runtime, precision, context length, and expected load.
For alternatives, compare models on the same task and dataset—not just parameter count or a headline score. Relevant factors include prompt versus response or refusal detection, image support, language coverage, policy-specific performance, threshold calibration, local hardware needs, and whether you require open weights or hosted-service convenience.
