Mistbury Catacombs is in Enshrouded’s Springlands, in the hillside north of the Hill of Scavengers. From the Ancient Vault-Farmer, travel west, go around the mountain’s western side, then continue north. The dungeon’s outer barrier is wooden, but the interior metal gates require lockpicks.

The quickest reliable solution is to use the main chamber’s bridge as your reset point, clear the four switch branches in sequence, and watch the indicator lights above the final gate. Bring lockpicks, a grappling hook, a ranged weapon, and an axe or pickaxe before you enter.

Where to find Mistbury Catacombs

Mistbury Catacombs is a Springlands dungeon. The practical approach starts at the Ancient Vault-Farmer. Travel west from that location, follow the mountain around its western side, and then continue north. The entrance is built into the hillside north of the Hill of Scavengers.

This approach is easier to follow than trying to search the mountain face from the south. Once you have gone around the western side, keep the Hill of Scavengers as your northern reference point and look for the hillside entrance. The first obstacle is a wooden outer barrier rather than the metal gates found deeper inside.

What to bring before entering

The dungeon combines destructible barriers, locked metal gates, vertical platforms, and switches that do not all use the same activation method. Pack the following items before leaving the entrance area:

  • Lockpicks: The interior metal gates are opened with lockpicks. The outer wooden barrier can also be lockpicked, but using a lockpick there may leave you short for the metal gates.
  • Axe or pickaxe: Either can smash the wooden outer barrier, and an appropriate tool can also deal with wooden doors on the route.
  • Explosives: These are another way to destroy the wooden outer barrier if you prefer not to spend a lockpick.
  • Grappling hook: The second and fourth switch routes use elevated platforms and grapple crossings.
  • Ranged weapon and ammunition: At least one switch is activated by shooting it from a reachable position. A bow is a practical choice.
  • Shroud protection: The lower sections expose you to Shroud. Carry enough Shroud time or consumables to complete the descent and return.

Do not assume that opening the first wooden barrier proves you have the equipment for the puzzle. Lockpicks are the item most likely to be wasted early, because the entrance barrier can be broken instead.

How to get through the entrance barrier

The outer barrier is wooden. You have three workable options:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a lockpick on it.
  2. Smash it with an axe or pickaxe.
  3. Destroy it with explosives.

Saving the lockpick is usually the sensible choice. The metal gates inside cannot be treated like the wooden barrier, so keep lockpicks for those doors unless you have a specific reason to open the entrance quietly.

The fastest four-switch route

Inside, use the main chamber and its bridge as your navigation reset point. The route below minimizes confusion by returning to that central reference whenever a branch is complete. The objective is not to follow a universal numbering scheme—different layouts and guides label the switches differently—but to activate all four and confirm that the lights above the final gate are lit.

Switch branch Route from the bridge or entrance How to activate it Required equipment
First Take the branch from the bridge to the lower level. Drop near the closed metal gate, use the alternate ledge route, and open or break the wooden door. Activate the switch on the lower path; it can be triggered from the indicated position with a ranged weapon. Axe or pickaxe for the wooden door, plus a ranged weapon
Second After the first switch, use the route that has opened and grapple to the elevated platform. Shoot the visible switch. Grappling hook and ranged weapon
Third Return to the entrance and take the first-left branch from the bridge. Descend directly to the switch, then retrace your route. Activate the switch on the descent route. Shroud protection for the lower section
Fourth Return to the entrance and take the second-left branch. Open the interior metal gate, climb to the upper platform, and grapple across. Interact with the final switch; this one is not activated by shooting. Lockpick and grappling hook

Step-by-step switch instructions

1. Clear the lower branch and activate the first switch

From the main chamber, use the bridge as your starting landmark and take the branch that leads down to the lower level. You will drop near a closed metal gate. Do not treat that gate as the only route forward. Use the alternate ledge route beside it to reach the wooden door on the lower path.

Open the wooden door with the appropriate tool or break it if necessary. Continue along the lower path until you reach the first switch position. This switch can be activated with a ranged weapon from the position shown by the route. Shooting it is important: do not waste time trying to find an interaction prompt if the switch is within your line of fire.

Once it is active, return toward the central route and use the newly available passage for the next branch. The lower section is exposed to Shroud, so keep an eye on your remaining protection while you move between the switch and the bridge.

2. Grapple to the elevated platform for the second switch

After the first switch has opened the relevant route, follow that now-accessible path to the elevated platform. Position yourself for the grapple and cross to the platform rather than searching the lower floor for another switch.

The second switch is visible from the elevated route and is activated by shooting it. Use your bow or another ranged weapon, confirm that the indicator responds, and then return to the main chamber. This is the first place where the grappling hook and ranged weapon are both required in the same branch.

3. Take the first-left branch for the third switch

Return to the entrance side of the main chamber. From the bridge, take the first-left branch. This route descends directly toward the third switch, so follow the descent instead of repeating the earlier lower-level detour.

Activate the switch when you reach it, then retrace the same route to the bridge. The third branch is deliberately simple once you are at the correct left turn; most navigation errors come from entering the second-left branch too early or using the switch numbering from a different map.

4. Use the second-left branch for the fourth switch

Return to the entrance and take the second-left branch from the bridge. This branch contains an interior metal gate. Use a lockpick on that gate; the wooden-barrier methods from the entrance do not replace the lockpick requirement here.

After opening the gate, climb to the upper platform. Use the grappling hook to cross to the final switch. Unlike the earlier shootable switches, this one must be activated by interacting with it. Stand at the switch and use the interaction prompt rather than firing at it.

Return to the main chamber after the interaction and look at the lights above the final gate. All four indicators should be lit before you spend time trying to force the gate open.

How to open the final gate

The final gate opens when all four switches are active. The clearest confirmation is the set of lights above the gate: each activated switch lights another indicator. If the gate is still closed, check the lights rather than relying on a guide’s switch numbers.

Guide layouts use different numbering conventions, so “switch one” or “switch four” may not correspond to the same physical control in every map. The branch directions are the dependable instructions: lower branch with the alternate ledge, grapple route to the visible shootable switch, first-left descent, and second-left metal-gate route ending at the interactable switch.

Once the gate opens, proceed to the final sarcophagus. The unique reward documented for Mistbury Catacombs is Pikemead’s Bulwark, a shield.

Why the gate may stay closed after all four switches

There are two different situations that can look similar. First, one switch may not actually be active even though you visited its branch. Second, the game may fail to update the gate after every indicator is lit.

Check that every switch is really active

  • Return to the main chamber and count the lit indicators above the gate.
  • Revisit the lower branch if the first switch was shot from an uncertain angle.
  • Confirm that the elevated visible switch was hit with a ranged weapon.
  • Make sure the final upper-platform switch was interacted with rather than attacked.
  • Use the branch descriptions instead of relying on a guide’s numbering.

Restart or re-enter if the puzzle state is stuck

A Steam player-support thread records cases in which the gate remained closed after all four switches were lit. The reported workarounds were to leave the dungeon and return, or to fully exit and restart the game. These are community-reported workarounds, not an official fix, and their success may depend on the game version.

If you leave the dungeon, note your route back to the entrance so you can verify the indicators again after returning. If you restart, repeat the indicator check before using tools on another branch; the goal is to distinguish a missed activation from a state-update problem.

Navigation checklist

Use this compact checklist when planning the run:

  1. Start at the Ancient Vault-Farmer and travel west around the mountain’s western side.
  2. Continue north to the hillside entrance north of the Hill of Scavengers.
  3. Break the wooden outer barrier with an axe, pickaxe, or explosives when possible.
  4. Keep lockpicks for interior metal gates.
  5. At the main chamber, use the bridge as the reset point.
  6. Clear the lower branch and shoot the first switch.
  7. Grapple to the elevated platform and shoot the second switch.
  8. Take the first-left branch for the third switch and retrace your route.
  9. Take the second-left branch, lockpick the metal gate, grapple across, and interact with the fourth switch.
  10. Confirm all four lights above the final gate are lit before troubleshooting.

This sequence keeps the route understandable even when map illustrations label the switches differently. It also reserves the equipment that is uniquely needed later: lockpicks for the metal gate, a grappling hook for both elevated sections, and a ranged weapon for the shootable controls.
