If your budget is capped at $500, the strongest evidence-backed new mirrorless candidate here is the Canon EOS R100—but its U.S. kit listing was $549.99 and unavailable when checked on October 7, 2026. That is not a current under-$500 deal. Used cameras may open up more options, but prices and availability need to be checked listing by listing. First decide whether your $500 limit covers a camera body alone or a working kit with a lens.

Is there a new mirrorless camera under $500?

The budget is restrictive for new mirrorless cameras. RTINGS describes the category as limited at this price and identifies the Canon EOS R100 as one of the few new options worth considering (RTINGS’ under-$500 camera guide). But the available Canon U.S. listing does not establish that the R100 currently fits the cap: the RF-S 18-45mm kit was listed at $549.99 and marked no longer available on October 7, 2026. The page also showed a regular price of $679.99 and a promotion window in September 2026, which had already passed when checked (Canon’s EOS R100 kit listing).

Those figures describe a complete kit with a lens, not a body-only price. They are a dated listing snapshot, not a live quote. Check the current price and stock before deciding whether the R100 meets your budget.

What the Canon EOS R100 offers

Canon specifies a 24.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, DIGIC 8 processor, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, and continuous shooting up to 6.5 frames per second. The included RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens makes the listed configuration a camera-and-lens kit, rather than a body-only purchase (Canon’s product listing).

Autofocus and still photography

Dual Pixel CMOS AF and a 24.1MP APS-C sensor make the R100 a plausible entry-level option for general still photography, provided you find a verified offer within budget. These specifications do not establish a comparative ranking against other cameras or guarantee performance for a particular subject.

Video limits and screen usability

The R100 records cropped 4K video at up to 24 fps and Full HD at up to 60 fps. Digital Camera World’s specification summary describes a fixed, non-touch screen (Digital Camera World’s cheap-camera guide). That combination is worth weighing if you need flexible framing or touch controls; the available evidence does not support calling it the best choice for vlogging.

Check lens compatibility and future costs

The R100 uses Canon’s RF mount. RF and RF-S lenses fit directly. EF and EF-S lenses require Canon’s EF-EOS R adapter, while EF-M lenses are not compatible with the camera (Canon’s R100 support specifications).

If you already own lenses, confirm their mount before buying and include any required adapter in your total cost. If you are starting from scratch, account for the lens in the kit price and for the cost of any additional lenses you may want later.

When buying used makes sense

Buying used is a general route to a wider range of cameras at a tight budget, but the available evidence does not verify current prices for five specific models. Rather than rely on an unverified “top five” ranking, assess each live listing and the full cost of a usable setup.

  • Confirm whether the listing is for a body only or includes a lens.
  • Check the camera’s condition and whether the battery and charger are included.
  • Read the seller’s return terms before purchase.
  • Add any missing lens or accessories to the price when comparing listings.
  • Check that the mount suits lenses you own or plan to buy.

Budget for a memory card

Canon specifies one SD card slot compatible with UHS-I. A compatible card is a practical optional setup cost; do not assume one is included, and choose a card based on your needs rather than treating a particular brand or capacity as required (Canon’s R100 support specifications).

How to make the decision

  1. Set the scope of the $500 cap. Decide whether it must cover only the camera body or the camera, lens, and any necessary accessories.
  2. Check current availability. Treat the R100’s October 7, 2026 Canon listing as historical information; verify a live offer before relying on its price or stock.
  3. Compare complete setups. For used listings, include the lens and any missing battery, charger, adapter, or card in your cost calculation.
  4. Match the camera to your use. Consider the R100’s 4K crop, 24 fps ceiling, Full HD 60 fps option, and fixed non-touch screen against your still-photo and video needs.
  5. Check the mount before upgrading. Confirm direct compatibility or account for an adapter, and exclude EF-M lenses from R100 plans.
