Yes—Mint Mobile works in Canada. Mint says every plan includes Canada roaming at no extra charge: unlimited talk and text plus 3 GB of high-speed data per month while you are in Canada. The Canada data is separate from your normal U.S. plan allowance.

Before crossing the border, make sure your phone is compatible and has been activated on Mint’s U.S. home network. In Canada, turn on Data Roaming. Mint says service starts automatically after you enter Canada and switches back to your regular plan when you return to the United States.

What Mint Mobile includes in Canada

Mint’s Canada roaming benefit is included with its plans rather than sold as a separate international package. The Canada-specific allowance is:

Service in Canada What Mint states
Talk Unlimited talk while in Canada
Text Unlimited text while in Canada
Data 3 GB of high-speed data per month, usable only in Canada
Additional charge None for the included Canada roaming benefit
Effect on U.S. allowance Canada data does not reduce the normal monthly U.S. data allotment

Mint announced this policy for new subscribers beginning July 1, 2024. Existing subscribers received it when their monthly plan data refreshed. The 3 GB is a monthly Canada allowance, not a one-time lifetime amount.

Mint’s published Canada guidance identifies the data as “high-speed,” but it does not specify the speed after the 3 GB is consumed or list a separate overage price. Do not assume that additional data will remain at the same speed or that a particular charge will apply. Check Mint’s current terms if you expect to use more than 3 GB.

How to set up your phone before leaving the United States

Most problems are prevented by completing the activation and compatibility checks at home, where you can still use Mint’s normal support channels and Wi-Fi.

  1. Confirm the phone is compatible and unlocked. Mint’s terms require a compatible device; eSIM also requires an eligible compatible unlocked handset. The available material does not establish a universal list of Canadian-compatible models, so verify your exact phone with Mint before travel.
  2. Activate the line on Mint’s U.S. home network. Mint’s terms say the device must first be activated on the home network. Do not wait until you are already in Canada to complete initial activation.
  3. Install the current SIM or eSIM profile. Finish setup, place a test call, send a text, and confirm mobile data works in the United States. A line that has not completed domestic activation may not register correctly for roaming.
  4. Record your account access. Keep your Mint account credentials and a way to receive account-security codes if you need support while traveling.
  5. Check the phone’s roaming control. Know where the Data Roaming switch is located so you can enable it after crossing the border. On many Android phones it is under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs; on iPhone it is under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options. Menu names vary by model and software version.

What to do after you enter Canada

  1. Turn on Data Roaming. Mint specifically instructs customers to enable this setting for data service in Canada. Keep cellular data enabled for the Mint line if your phone has multiple SIMs.
  2. Allow the phone to register. Mint says the Canada benefit starts automatically when the phone enters Canada. Registration can take a few minutes after the device connects to a Canadian partner network.
  3. Test each service. Place a call, send an SMS, and open a simple web page. Testing all three distinguishes a voice, messaging, or data problem.
  4. Monitor the Canada allowance. The included high-speed amount is 3 GB per month. Use your phone’s data tracker or Mint’s account tools to avoid unexpectedly exhausting it.

When you return to the United States, Mint says the line changes back to the regular domestic plan automatically. You should not need to purchase or cancel a Canada pass to trigger that change.

Do you need a Minternational Pass?

No—not for Canada. Mint explicitly says Minternational Passes do not work in Canada and are unnecessary because Canada roaming is already included. Buying one for a Canadian trip will not add the promised Canada service.

Minternational Passes are intended for eligible destinations outside this Canada exception. If your itinerary includes another country, check that destination’s current eligibility and rates before departure. Treat the Canada and non-Canada portions of a multi-country trip separately: the included 3 GB benefit applies in Canada, while another country may require a different option.

Canada roaming versus calling Canada from the United States

Two benefits are easy to confuse:

  • Roaming in Canada: you are physically in Canada using your Mint line. Mint says this includes unlimited talk and text plus 3 GB of high-speed data each month.
  • Calling Canada from the United States: Mint advertises international calling from the U.S. to Canada as included. That is a domestic-location calling benefit, not evidence about data or service while you are physically abroad.

For example, calling a Canadian number from your home in the United States is not the same scenario as using mobile data in Toronto. Check the rule that matches your location and activity.

Coverage, speed, and device limitations

Coverage is not universal

Mint warns that coverage is unavailable in some areas. Canada is geographically large, and a plan that works in one city may not work in a remote or sparsely served location. Do not treat the included benefit as a guarantee of service everywhere in the country or on every Canadian network.

The 3 GB figure is high-speed data

The Canada allowance is described as 3 GB of high-speed data per month. Mint’s Canada instructions do not state what happens to speed after that amount is used. They also do not establish a universal overage rate. If you rely on maps, video, hotspot use, or other heavy data applications, plan around the stated 3 GB rather than assuming unlimited high-speed service.

Compatibility still matters

Roaming inclusion does not make an incompatible phone usable. Mint’s terms require a compatible device, and eSIM activation is limited to eligible unlocked devices. The available policy does not promise support for every handset model, radio configuration, or location in Canada. Verify your exact phone and destination with Mint’s latest eligibility and coverage information.

Troubleshooting when Mint does not work in Canada

Follow these steps in order. After each step, wait briefly and test a call, text, and data connection.

  1. Check Data Roaming. Confirm the switch is on for the Mint SIM or eSIM, not a different line in a dual-SIM phone.
  2. Toggle Airplane Mode. Turn Airplane Mode on, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it off. This forces the phone to search for a network again. Mint lists this as a basic fix.
  3. Restart the phone. A full restart can reload the roaming profile and network registration. Mint also recommends restarting when service does not start.
  4. Confirm the line is active. Sign in to your Mint account over Wi-Fi and check that the plan has not expired, been suspended, or reached an account-level restriction.
  5. Check the selected SIM for data. On dual-SIM devices, set the Mint line as the cellular-data line or temporarily disable the other line while testing.
  6. Move to a different location. Coverage gaps can look like a phone fault. Try outdoors or in another part of town before changing advanced settings.
  7. Contact Mint support if registration still fails. Have your phone model, whether it uses a physical SIM or eSIM, the Canadian location, and the time the problem began. Do not buy a Minternational Pass as a troubleshooting step; Mint says it does not work in Canada.

Family accounts and additional data

Mint Family members can purchase their own Canada roaming data add-on or request one from the Primary Account Holder, according to Mint’s Canada support guidance. The included benefit remains the baseline 3 GB of high-speed data per month. Because the reviewed Canada policy does not state the speed or price that applies after the included amount, confirm the current add-on terms in your account before relying on extra data.

Short trips and extended stays are different

Situation What the Mint policy supports What to check
Short Canadian trip Included Canada roaming: unlimited talk and text plus 3 GB of high-speed data per month Compatible unlocked phone, U.S. activation, Data Roaming enabled, and local coverage
Trip that also includes other countries Canada benefit applies only in Canada Destination eligibility and current international options for each other country
Extended or repeated international use Not a substitute for a permanent foreign-service plan U.S. residency, primary U.S. use, and Mint’s excessive-roaming restrictions

Mint’s terms say the account holder must reside in the United States and that primary use must occur in the United States. The terms and Acceptable Use Policy allow Mint to restrict or terminate service for excessive roaming or extended international use. A Canadian vacation is different from maintaining a line primarily abroad, and the policy does not provide a fixed number of days that guarantees continued roaming.

  • RELIABLE NATIONWIDE COVERAGE: Enjoy 8GB of high-speed 5G/4G LTE data on the T-Mobile 5G Network.

  • BRING YOUR OWN PHONE: Activate your compatible unlocked phone with the included 3-in-1 SIM card or eSIM. Keep your number or get a new one.
  • NO CONTRACTS: Prepaid wireless with no annual contracts, no credit checks, and no hidden fees.

Practical ways to stretch the included data

  • Download maps, playlists, and shows over Wi-Fi before departure.
  • Use hotel, home, or café Wi-Fi for large updates and cloud backups.
  • Disable automatic app updates and photo syncing over cellular data.
  • Set a warning near 2.5 GB so you have room for navigation and messages later in the month.
  • Use Wi-Fi calling or messaging where appropriate, while remembering that availability depends on your phone, settings, and network connection.

These steps do not change Mint’s allowance; they simply reduce the chance that background traffic consumes the 3 GB before you need it.

What to verify before every Canadian trip

  • Your Mint line is active and was activated on the U.S. home network.
  • Your handset is compatible, unlocked, and using a current SIM or eligible eSIM.
  • Data Roaming is enabled for the Mint line.
  • You know how to toggle Airplane Mode and restart the phone.
  • Your destination has usable coverage according to Mint’s current information.
  • You understand that Canada includes 3 GB of high-speed data per month, while post-allowance speed and charges are not specified in the Canada guidance.
  • You are traveling temporarily and continue to meet Mint’s U.S.-residency and primary-use requirements.

For a normal short visit, the answer is straightforward: activate in the United States, enable Data Roaming in Canada, and use the included talk, text, and 3 GB data benefit. The important limits are coverage gaps, device compatibility, the monthly high-speed cap, and Mint’s restrictions on prolonged international use.
