Short answer: choose the Synology DS224+ for the simplest family backup and photo cloud, the QNAP TS-464 when four bays, 2.5GbE and expansion justify a little more administration, or the Minisforum N5 when you specifically want mini-PC performance, USB4, 10Gbps-class networking and up to 96GB of memory. None of these figures includes the storage drives, and RAID is not a backup.

At a glance: the best fit for each buyer

Buyer priority Best fit What you get Main compromise
Simple household backup, photo management and private cloud Synology DS224+ DSM software, Btrfs snapshots, Synology Drive and Photos, low power draw and straightforward two-disk RAID1 Two bays and dual 1GbE limit future capacity and network speed
Four-bay value, media libraries and room to grow QNAP TS-464 Four drive bays, dual 2.5GbE, two M.2 slots, PCIe expansion and HDMI/video features QTS and QuTS hero expose more settings and require more decisions
Maximum hardware flexibility in a compact box Minisforum N5 Eight-core Ryzen 7 255, up to 96GB DDR5, USB4, OCuLink, PCIe 4.0 x4 and 5Gbps/10Gbps Ethernet Software, update policy, drive compatibility and community guidance are less standardized
Five-bay, multi-SSD and dual-10GbE appliance Minisforum N5 Max Five SATA bays, five M.2 slots and dual 10GbE A reported $2,899 price places it outside an affordable-NAS brief

The enclosure is only the starting point. Add NAS-rated 3.5-inch SATA hard drives, possible memory or SSD upgrades, networking equipment and a separate backup before comparing the real cost.

What you are actually buying

A NAS combines a small computer, a storage pool and operating software. The enclosure supplies the processor, memory, drive bays and network ports; you supply the disks that hold your data. Capacity is determined by the installed drives and the selected protection layout, not by the empty chassis.

Usable capacity is lower than the label

Four 24TB disks in the TS-464 can be configured as RAID5 for a headline 72TB before filesystem overhead and unit conversion. RAID1 in a two-bay DS224+ mirrors both disks, so two equal drives provide roughly one drive’s usable capacity. Mixed-size disks are normally constrained by the smallest member, and replacing a disk with a larger one does not create usable space until the array has rebuilt and, where supported, been expanded.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

RAID is availability, not a backup

Mirroring or parity keeps a NAS online after a drive failure. It does not restore files deleted by mistake, encrypted by ransomware, corrupted by software, stolen with the NAS or lost to fire or flood. Keep at least one independent copy, preferably with a different failure domain, and test that you can restore representative files.

Minisforum N5: the performance-and-connectivity outlier

The N5 is best understood as a hybrid NAS and mini workstation rather than a conventional appliance. A July 5, 2025 global-availability report describes an eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 255 with a 3.8GHz base clock and up to 4.9GHz boost. Two SO-DIMM slots accept up to 96GB of DDR5. The platform does not support ECC memory, so it should not be treated as having server-class protection against memory errors.

Ports and expansion

  • Two USB4 ports for high-speed peripherals and external storage.
  • Ethernet interfaces rated at 5Gbps and 10Gbps classes, subject to the connected switch, cabling and client hardware.
  • OCuLink for compatible external expansion.
  • A PCIe 4.0 x4 slot for an expansion device.

This combination gives the N5 substantially more headroom than entry two-bay appliances. It can make sense for a technically confident owner who wants to run storage alongside virtual machines, development tools or other workstation-style workloads. Those uses depend on the operating system and configuration you choose, not only on the processor.

Price and configuration caveat

The launch report listed a barebones starting price of $553 for a configuration with 64GB of storage and no RAM; a 16GB RAM option was reported as $48 more. These are dated launch figures rather than a current quotation. Confirm the exact memory, storage and operating-system bundle before ordering, because the cost can change materially once drives and RAM are added.

Software decisions you must make

You need to evaluate MinisCloud OS, Linux or Windows, along with the vendor’s update policy, supported drive list and the amount of community documentation available for your chosen setup. A flexible operating-system choice is useful, but it also means you are responsible for selecting a filesystem, configuring services, applying security updates and planning recovery. Build a tested backup before experimenting with alternate systems.

Synology DS224+: the easiest appliance to live with

The DS224+ uses an Intel Celeron J4125 with four cores, a 2.0GHz base frequency and 2.7GHz turbo frequency. It includes 2GB of DDR4 non-ECC memory, expandable to 6GB, and two bays that accept either 3.5-inch SATA hard disks or 2.5-inch SATA solid-state drives. Dual 1GbE ports and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports cover ordinary household and small-office connections.

Why DSM changes the buying decision

Synology’s DSM software is the product’s strongest differentiator. Documented features include private-cloud file sharing, Synology Drive for synchronized folders, Synology Photos, Active Backup, Btrfs snapshots, Hybrid Share and Surveillance Station. These packages provide guided workflows for people who want a managed appliance rather than a server project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Synology reports 62% more web-application responses, 52% faster Drive file indexing and 28% faster Photos indexing than the DS220+. Those are the company’s internal comparisons under its test conditions; they are not a guarantee for every number of users, disk model or workload.

Power, warranty and limits

The product page lists 14.69W access power consumption and a two-year warranty, extendable to four years in supported regions. Actual electricity use varies with disks and activity. Two bays make RAID1 easy to understand, but they leave less room for a future capacity increase than a four-bay design. The 1GbE ports also make it a poor match for a household that already has multi-gigabit networking and regularly moves large media files.

QNAP TS-464: the balanced four-bay option

The TS-464 is a compact four-bay NAS. QNAP describes a maximum of 72TB using four 24TB drives in RAID5 and up to 4TB of M.2 SSD caching. The enclosure has two built-in 2.5GbE ports, two M.2 slots, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports and a PCIe slot that can accept a dual-port 10GbE card. HDMI and video-conversion features can support local display or media workflows when the software and codecs you use are compatible.

QTS or QuTS hero

QTS is the default operating system. QNAP states that the unit can switch to QuTS hero from QTS 5.2.1. That choice affects filesystem and management options, so select it before creating a production pool and read the migration requirements carefully. Hard drives and SSDs are sold separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network performance in context

QNAP claims up to 589MB/s with port trunking on the two 2.5GbE ports and up to 1,647MB/s with a supported dual-port 10GbE card. These are vendor test figures, not guaranteed transfer rates. To approach them, the NAS, switch, cabling, client storage and protocol configuration all need to support the same speeds; a single 1GbE client will remain limited to roughly that link rate.

Four bays, M.2 slots and a PCIe path make the TS-464 a strong fit for creators, Plex-style libraries, backups and homelabs that may grow. The trade-off is a steeper learning curve than DSM: you have more networking, storage and application choices to secure and maintain.

Two bays or four: a capacity decision, not just a price decision

Choose two bays when simplicity wins

  • You need a mirrored family file and photo store rather than a large media archive.
  • You prefer replacing a failed disk and rebuilding a simple RAID1 set.
  • Your network is 1GbE and your routine transfers do not justify an upgrade.
  • You value a smaller, lower-power appliance and a mature guided software ecosystem.

A two-bay unit can still host backups, synchronization and surveillance workloads, but expansion usually means replacing both disks with larger ones or attaching external storage. Plan that upgrade cost before buying small disks.

Choose four bays when growth is predictable

  • You want RAID5’s capacity efficiency while retaining one-disk fault tolerance.
  • You expect a growing photo, video or backup library and would rather add disks than replace a mirrored pair.
  • You can use 2.5GbE now or may add 10GbE through a PCIe card later.
  • You want separate SSD cache or tiering options with defined workloads.

Parity arrays require more careful rebuild planning. A second disk failure during a rebuild can make recovery dependent on your backup, so do not treat the extra bay as permission to skip independent copies.

Networking: when 2.5GbE or 10GbE pays off

Faster NAS ports matter only when the complete path is faster. Check the NAS port, switch, client adapter, cable category and the disk or SSD speed at each end. Port trunking can combine links for multiple clients, but it does not normally turn one single-stream connection into one link twice as fast.

A practical upgrade sequence

  1. Confirm that your main computer has a 2.5GbE or 10GbE adapter, or budget for one.
  2. Replace a 1GbE switch with a multi-gig switch that supports the speeds you intend to use.
  3. Use cabling rated for the target distance and speed, then verify negotiated link rates in the switch and operating system.
  4. Measure a large-file transfer and a workload made of many small files; they stress different parts of the NAS.

If most clients are wireless or 1GbE, the DS224+’s dual 1GbE ports may be sufficient. If several wired clients edit media, back up simultaneously or access large virtual-machine images, the TS-464’s 2.5GbE ports are easier to use immediately. The N5’s faster interfaces are attractive only if you are prepared to design and troubleshoot the surrounding network.

What the total cost includes

Cost item DS224+ TS-464 N5
NAS enclosure Model price; drives not included Model price; QNAP states hard drives and SSDs are sold separately Reported launch barebones price of $553; verify current bundle
Primary storage Two NAS-rated 3.5-inch SATA HDDs or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs Up to four NAS-rated 3.5-inch SATA HDDs; optional M.2 SSDs Drives required according to the selected operating system and chassis support
Memory 2GB included, expandable to 6GB Upgrade cost depends on the supported configuration DDR5 SO-DIMM cost; up to 96GB, no ECC
Network equipment Usually existing 1GbE equipment Potential 2.5GbE switch; 10GbE card and switch for higher speeds Potential multi-gig switch, cabling and compatible client adapter
Backup target A separate disk, computer or off-site destination sized for the data you cannot replace

Do not use a one-time enclosure price as the comparison. Price the same usable capacity, the same level of redundancy and a real backup target. Add M.2 SSDs only when you can name the workload they will accelerate; cache does not replace adequate RAM or fast primary storage.

Setup plan that avoids the common mistakes

  1. Inventory your data. Record current capacity, annual growth, largest files, number of users and which folders need version history.
  2. Choose the protection layout. Use RAID1 for a simple two-disk mirror. Use RAID5 on a four-bay system only after confirming that its usable capacity and rebuild risk fit your backup plan.
  3. Buy matched, supported drives. Select NAS-rated SATA drives, check the manufacturer’s compatibility information and avoid assuming that every desktop disk is suitable for continuous array operation.
  4. Install updates before importing data. Apply the current operating-system and security updates, change the administrator credentials and disable services you do not need.
  5. Create separate accounts. Give each person an individual login, use strong unique passwords and grant access to shared folders by role rather than sharing one administrator account.
  6. Configure snapshots or versioning. On the DS224+, Btrfs snapshots and the documented backup packages can provide recovery points. On QNAP or a Linux-based N5 installation, select equivalent snapshot and versioning tools deliberately.
  7. Set up the independent backup. Copy critical folders to a destination that is not permanently exposed to the NAS. Encrypt the backup where appropriate and include the keys in your recovery plan.
  8. Test restoration. Restore a document, a photo set and a large file. Confirm that permissions, filenames and versions survive the process.
  9. Document recovery. Record the array layout, disk serial numbers, administrator recovery method, backup schedule and the order in which services should be restored.

Software and administration trade-offs

DSM on the DS224+

DSM emphasizes guided package installation and integrated workflows. That reduces the number of choices a first-time owner must make and is why the DS224+ is the safest recommendation for a family that wants the NAS to disappear into the background. The cost is less hardware expansion than the other two choices.

QTS or QuTS hero on the TS-464

QNAP exposes more options for storage, applications, networking and local media. This is useful for a homelab or a creator who will actively tune the system, but every enabled service increases the patching and security surface. Decide whether you need QTS or QuTS hero before building the pool, and keep a configuration record.

Minisforum software choices

The N5’s choice among MinisCloud OS, Linux and Windows can be its biggest advantage or its biggest risk. Linux can offer broad server software and filesystem choices; Windows may suit familiar desktop tools; a vendor OS may provide a more appliance-like experience. Verify driver support, sleep and fan behavior, update cadence, SMART monitoring, notifications and recovery documentation for the exact version you intend to run.

Common pitfalls and how to recover

The NAS is slower than expected

Check the negotiated network speed first, then test with a wired client and a large file. If small files are slow, indexing, antivirus scanning, metadata operations or a busy disk may be the cause. Faster Ethernet cannot overcome a single slow disk or a client writing to a nearly full volume.

A drive fails during a rebuild

Stop treating the array as the backup. Confirm that your independent copy is readable, replace failed hardware with a compatible disk, and follow the platform’s documented rebuild procedure. Avoid repeatedly powering the system off during recovery unless the vendor’s instructions require it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote access becomes a security problem

Prefer a secured VPN or vendor-supported relay over exposing administration ports directly to the internet. Enable multifactor authentication when available, remove unused accounts, patch promptly and review login alerts. Keep a local recovery path in case remote access is disabled during an incident.

The N5 configuration is unsupported

Before changing operating systems or adding a PCIe device, verify firmware, driver and slot compatibility. Save the current configuration and ensure you can reinstall the chosen system without relying on data stored only on the NAS.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Synology DS224+ if

  • Your priority is a reliable, low-maintenance family cloud for documents and photos.
  • Two mirrored drives provide enough near-term capacity.
  • You prefer guided DSM applications, Btrfs snapshots and integrated backup tools over hardware expansion.

Buy the QNAP TS-464 if

  • You can use four bays now or expect your library to grow beyond a mirrored pair.
  • You have, or will install, a 2.5GbE network and may later need PCIe 10GbE.
  • You are comfortable learning QTS or QuTS hero and maintaining a broader application stack.

Buy the Minisforum N5 if

  • You want a compact, high-performance platform with up to 96GB DDR5, USB4, OCuLink and PCIe 4.0 x4.
  • You are prepared to choose and maintain the operating system rather than expecting a fully standardized appliance.
  • You have a clear plan for non-ECC memory risk, backups, drive compatibility and software updates.

For most households, the DS224+ is the sensible default. The TS-464 is the better value when four bays and multi-gig networking have a real job to do. The N5 is the specialist choice for technically confident buyers who value connectivity and compute flexibility more than a mature, uniform NAS experience.
