Mining companies invest in digital transformation to improve productivity, worker safety, equipment uptime, profitability, and environmental performance. Connected systems can help teams plan work, monitor equipment, coordinate machines, and automate or remotely operate some tasks. These are potential benefits, not guaranteed results: value depends on the mine, its connectivity and equipment, and how well people and processes adapt.
What digital transformation means in a mine
It is the use of connected digital tools and new operating practices to manage mine work and assets—not simply buying software or installing sensors. Applications include remote and automated mining, robotics, modelling, GPS and geographic information systems (GIS), sensors, and analytics, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
These tools can connect information that would otherwise sit in separate systems or arrive too late to guide a decision. A sensor reading, equipment location, mine plan, and operating status become more useful when teams can view and act on them together.

Why companies invest
Improve productivity and coordinate work
Mine operators use planning tools, equipment data, and automation to better coordinate activities and identify delays or bottlenecks. Digital mine-planning software can support decisions about where and how to work; equipment systems can provide visibility into what is operating and where. Sandvik describes its AutoMine automation, Deswik mine-planning software, and digital support as part of an effort to improve uptime and productivity. Those are company-described capabilities and goals, not independent proof of a specific result at every mine. Sandvik’s 2024 report discusses these offerings.

Reduce exposure to hazardous work
Remote operation and automation can move some tasks away from hazardous areas or let machinery operate without a driver onboard. That can reduce worker exposure in particular situations, but it does not eliminate mining hazards or establish a safety improvement by itself. Epiroc describes remote operation, collision avoidance, and optimization as mechanisms associated with its automation offerings. At year-end 2025, Epiroc reported that its software was used by more than 3,900 driverless mining vehicles; this is a company-reported deployment count, not an independent measure of safety or productivity gains. Keep equipment available and plan maintenance
Sensors and analytics can help maintenance teams monitor equipment condition and plan service based on evidence about how assets are performing. This can support condition-based or predictive maintenance rather than relying only on fixed schedules. Hindustan Zinc reports deploying digital monitoring and predictive-maintenance capabilities, but one company’s example does not establish an industry-wide result. Its FY2024–25 report also says it invested ₹18.77 crore in digital and automation efforts during that financial year. Hindustan Zinc’s report describes its program.

Support environmental and energy goals
Better monitoring, planning, and coordination can help operators identify opportunities to use equipment and energy more efficiently. Digital tools may also support environmental monitoring and operational decisions. The outcome depends on what is measured and how teams use the information; installing technology alone does not demonstrate a reduction in emissions or environmental impact.

Companies pursue digital projects because greater productivity, fewer disruptions, and more effective maintenance may improve operating economics. The IEA estimates that a 5% reduction in operation and maintenance costs through digitalization over the period to 2040 could save companies and consumers an average of close to USD 20 billion per year. That is an IEA estimate across the energy sector, not a mining-specific forecast or guaranteed saving for an individual operator. The IEA’s Digitalization and Energy report gives the estimate.

What makes these systems work
Reliable connectivity
Equipment, sensors, and control systems need a dependable way to exchange information. In mines, the requirements vary across surface and underground operations. Epiroc identifies private LTE/4G/5G, digital radio, and Wi-Fi as connectivity options that support digitalization, automation, and electrification. Coverage, resilience, and fit with existing systems matter as much as the network label. Epiroc’s digitalization report describes these infrastructure approaches.
Systems that work together
Many mines use a mix of equipment, software, and legacy systems. A new tool has limited value if it cannot exchange useful data with the systems that crews already rely on. Before investing, operators need to consider compatibility across mixed fleets, data quality, and which team or system is responsible for each operational decision.

People, governance, and security
Digital transformation changes how information is collected, interpreted, and acted on. Workers need the training and support to use new tools; leaders need to define who owns data, how it can be shared, and what happens when systems fail or produce conflicting information. Cybersecurity also matters because connected operational systems create risks that need to be managed. Deloitte and McKinsey both emphasize that strategy, operating models, change management, management systems, culture, and workforce capabilities shape whether technology creates value. Deloitte’s mining transformation assessment and McKinsey’s mining productivity analysis discuss these organizational factors.
How to evaluate a mine digitalization project
There is no single system that fits every operation. A useful assessment starts with a defined operating problem and the conditions at the site, then tests whether the proposed technology can address it and whether the result can be measured.

- Define the problem. Specify whether the priority is worker exposure, planning, maintenance, throughput, energy use, or another operational need.
- Account for the site. Consider whether the operation is surface or underground, its connectivity coverage and resilience, and the conditions in which workers and equipment must function.
- Check integration. Assess compatibility with existing systems and mixed fleets, plus the quality and ownership of the data the project will use.
- Plan for people and risk. Identify training, process changes, cybersecurity controls, and responsibilities for acting on system alerts or handling outages.
- Set measures before deployment. Choose operational indicators tied to the original problem and establish how the mine will compare performance before and after implementation. Do not treat deployment counts or vendor-stated capabilities as proof of improved outcomes.

The figures come from Epiroc’s 2025 report, Sandvik’s 2024 report, and Hindustan Zinc’s FY2024–25 report, respectively. They describe different measures—deployment scale, revenue, and investment—so they should not be read as a direct comparison of results.
Why outcomes differ between mines
Digital maturity varies among mining companies, and operating conditions are not interchangeable. A tool that suits one site may be difficult to integrate at another because of differences in connectivity, equipment, workflows, or workforce readiness. Deloitte’s assessment and McKinsey’s analysis both point to the importance of organizational changes alongside technology. The practical test is whether a project solves a defined site problem, fits the operation, and produces a measurable improvement—not whether a mine has adopted the newest technology.
